Convergent genome streamlining accompanies independent miniaturization in the world's smallest fishes.

Miniaturization, the reduction of adult body size to an extreme degree, has evolved repeatedly across vertebrates. Yet its genomic underpinnings remain poorly understood. Cypriniformes, the most species-rich order of freshwater fishes, contains multiple miniaturized lineages that have evolved via contrasting developmental processes. Proportioned dwarfs are tiny-bodied but otherwise morphologically similar to larger relatives, while progenetic miniatures exhibit developmental truncation and retain larval-like anatomical features into adulthood. Using a new time-calibrated phylogeny of 309 cypri…

Successful cryopreservation in biodegradable containers of sperm from aquaculture Mediterranean fishes.

We aimed to evaluate the efficiency of hard-gelatin and hard-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) capsules as biodegradable alternative containers to plastic straws in European eel (Anguilla anguilla), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) sperm cryopreservation. Sperm samples from each European eel (n = 12) were diluted 1:8:1 (sperm: extender P1+5 % egg yolk: methanol). Gilthead seabream (n = 12) samples were individually diluted in a cryoprotectant solution of 5 % Me2SO + NaCl 1 % plus BSA (10 mg mL-1) at a ratio of 1:6 (sperm: cryoprotectant solution

Prediction of the Sex-Associated Genomic Region in Tunas (Thunnus Fishes).

Fish species have a variety of sex determination systems. Tunas (genus Thunnus) have an XY genetic sex determination system. However, the Y … s, our results raise a promising hypothesis that sult1st6y is the sex determination gene in Thunnus fishes or at least functions at a crucial point in the sex-differentiation cascade.

Foretelling the Flex-Vertebral Shape Predicts Behavior and Ecology of Fishes.

UNLABELLED: We modeled swimming kinematics and body mechanics of several fish species of varying habitat and body shape based on measurement … y, the internal shape of the vertebrae-where this material is found-was quantified in 16 species of fishes with various body shapes, swimming modes, and habitats. We used micro-computed tomography to measure the internal shape. We then created and mechanically tested physical models of intervertebral joints. We also mechanically tested actual vertebrae o …

Evidence of chitin in the ampullae of Lorenzini of chondrichthyan fishes.

We previously reported that the polysaccharide chitin, a key component of arthropod exoskeletons and fungal cell walls, is endogenously produced by fishes and amphibians in spite of the widely held view that it was not synthesized by vertebrates [1]. Genes encoding chitin synthase enzymes were found in the genomes of a number of fishes and amphibians and shown to be correspondingly expressed at the sites where chitin was localized [1,2]. In this report, we present evidence suggesting that chitin is prevalent within the specialized electrosensory organs of cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes).…

Evolution of a Functional Head Joint in Deep-Sea Fishes (Stomiidae).

The head and anterior trunk region of most actinopterygian fishes is stiffened as, uniquely within vertebrates, the pectoral girdles have a direct and often strong connection through the posttemporal to the posterior region of the skull. Members of the mesopelagic fish family Stomiidae have their pectoral girdle separated from the skull. This connection is lost in several teleost groups, but the stomiids have an additional evolutionary novelty-a flexible connection between the occiput and the first vertebra, where only the notochord persists. Several studies suggested that stomiids engulf sign…

Migration as an escape from parasitism in New Zealand galaxiid fishes.

Parasite avoidance is increasingly considered to be a potential driving factor in animal migrations. In many marine and freshwater benthic fish, migration into a pelagic environment by developing larvae is a common life history trait that could reduce exposure to parasites during a critical window of developmental susceptibility. We tested this hypothesis on congeneric fish (family Galaxiidae, genus Galaxias) belonging to a closely related species complex sampled from coastal streams in southeastern New Zealand. Migratory Galaxias have larvae that migrate to pelagic marine environments, wherea

Distribution of Anisakis species larvae from fishes of the Japanese waters.

Human anisakiasis is caused by the consumption of raw, marinated or undercooked fish and squid infected with nematodes of the genus Anisakis Dujardin, 1845. In view of food safety, this study was carried out to examine the distribution of Anisakis species in marine fishes within Japanese waters. Seven fish species from six localities were collected and examined for Anisakis infection. Morphological and molecular (ITS region and mtDNA cox2 gene) characterization revealed the presence of two, among the three sibling species of Anisakis simplex, viz. A. simplex sensu stricto (s.s.) and A. pegreff…

Response latencies to postural disturbances in three species of teleostean fishes.

Flow in aquatic systems is characterized by unsteadiness that creates destabilizing perturbations. Appropriate correction responses depend on response latency. The time between a disturbance induced by either removal of a flow refuge or striking various parts of the body with a narrow water jet was measured for three species, chosen as examples of modes in teleostean body/fin organization that are expected to affect stability. Creek chub Semotilus atromaculatus is representative of fusiform-bodied soft-rayed teleosts, smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu of fusiform-bodied spiny-rayed forms an

[Rates of infection of fishes from Okhotsk sea with human Anisakidae].

In 1987 to 1999, large-scale studies were conducted in the Okhotsk Sea basin for marketable fish infection with Anisakidae larvae that are a hazard to human health. A total of 9223 fishes of 18 species and 455 fishes of 5 species were examined in the North and South-West Okhotsk Sea Regions, respectively. In the North Okhotsk Sea Region, the larvae were detected in 58.8 (0.5% specimens of all species with the highest rates in the rasp (100%), Siberian salmon 93.9 (0.8%), herring 91.2 (0.7%), silver 90.9 (1.6%), halibut 89.7 (3.1%), Greenland halibut 87.3 (4.2). In the South-West Okhotsk Sea Re…

The biology of some intraerythrocytic parasites of fishes, amphibia and reptiles.

Fishes, amphibia and reptiles, the ectothermic vertebrates, are hosts for a variety of intraerythrocytic parasites including protists, prokaryotes, viruses and structures of uncertain status. These parasites may experience host temperature fluctuations, host reproductive strategies, population genetics, host habitat and migratory behaviour quite unlike those of endothermic hosts. Few blood infections of fishes, amphibia and reptiles have proven pathogenicity, in contrast to the many intraerythrocytic parasites of mammals and some birds which harm their hosts. Although not given the attention a…

Camallanus polypteri n. sp. (Nematoda:Camallanidae) in freshwater fishes from Burkina Faso.

Camallanus polypteri n. sp.is described from Polypterus bichir (type host), Synodontis schall and Clarias anguillaris in Lake Tingrela, Burkina Faso. It differs from the other African species of the subfamily Camallaninae parasitizing freshwater fishes, in that it lacks tridents. All species of the subfamily Camallaninae that lack tridents differ from the new species by at least one of the two following characters: a greater number of longitudinal ridges on the inner surface of the buccal capsule; and a muscular oesophagus shorter than the glandular oesophagus. In accordance with the classific…

Encephalization and brain organization of the fishes of the family Osteoglossidae.

Despite their primitive place in the classification of fishes, Osteoglossids have a high level of encephalization, which can be analyzed by studying their brain organization. The quantitative analysis of their main brain parts shows small relative volumes of the olfactory bulbs, normal importance of the optic tectum (linked to vision) and of the cerebellum (linked to motor abilities). The medulla oblongata shows very large gustatory lobes in Heterotis, due to the special microphagous mode of feeding of this species. The cerebral hemispheres are larger in Arapaima than in other osteoglossids, b…

The origin of the mammalian form of GnRH in primitive fishes.

The presence of neuroendocrine hormones in extant agnathan fishes suggests that a method of control involving these hormones was operating 500-600 million years ago in emerging vertebrates. Data on a limited number of species show that several members of the GnRH family of peptides may have arisen in non-teleost fishes. Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) GnRH has a unique composition and has not been detected in other vertebrates. It is not yet clear whether the chicken II GnRH-like molecule arose in cartilaginous fishes, but a chromatographically and immunologically similar molecule is found in dog…

Design and Initial Validation of an Infrared Beam-Break Fish Counter ('Fish Tracker') for Fish Passage Monitoring.

Effective monitoring of fish passage through river barriers is essential for evaluating fishway performance and supporting adaptive river management. Traditional methods are often invasive, labor-intensive, or too costly to enable widespread implementation across most fishways. Infrared (IR) beam-break counters offer a promising alternative, but their adoption has been limited by high costs and a lack of flexibility. We developed and tested a novel, low-cost infrared beam-break counter-FishTracker-based on open-source Raspberry Pi and Arduino platforms. The system detects fish passages by anal

Mercury Levels in Freshwater Fish: Estimating Concentration with Fish Length to Determine Exposures Through Fish Consumption.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic pollutant that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in aquatic food webs, impacting the health of piscivorous wildlife and human consumers of predatory fish. While fish mercury levels have been correlated with various biotic and abiotic factors, many studies only measure adults to characterize the health of locally fished populations, omitting information about how local fish bioaccumulate mercury relative to their growth. In this study, we sought to establish length: total mercury (THg) concentration relationships in juvenile and adult fish of four genera (sunf
