Evaluation of flood and landslide risk to the population of Italy.

We have compiled a database of floods and landslides that occurred in Italy between AD 1279 and 2002 and caused deaths, missing persons, injuries, and homelessness. Analysis of the database indicates that more than 50,593 people died, went missing, or were injured in 2580 flood and landslide events. Harmful events were inventoried in 26.3% of the 8103 Italian municipalities. Fatal events were most frequent in the Alpine regions of northern Italy and were caused by both floods and landslides. In southern Italy, landslides were the principal agents of fatalities and were most numerous in the Cam…

Interaction of flooding with carbon metabolism of forest trees.

Waterlogging and flooding cause oxygen deprivation in the root system of trees. Since oxygen is essentially for mitochondrial respiration, this process cannot be maintained under anoxic conditions and must be replaced by other pathways. For the roots it is therefore a matter of survival to switch from respiration to alcoholic fermentation. Due to the low efficiency of this process to yield energy equivalents (ATP), energy and carbon metabolism of trees are usually strongly affected by oxygen deprivation, even if a rapid switch from respiration to fermentation is achieved. The roots can compens

Mechanism of alveolar flooding in acute pulmonary oedema.

In severe pulmonary oedema, the alveoli fill rapidly with fluid of essentially the same protein composition as free interstitial fluid. The usual explanation is that the normally 'tight' alveolar epithelial intercellular junctions suddenly become freely permeable to proteins. But the pathophysiological basis for such a change is unknown. In seven anaesthetized dogs one lower lobe was filled with iso-osmotic fluid containing 125I-labelled albumin. The calculated alveolus-blood albumin permeability over three hours averaged 0.06 X 10(-7) cm/s. It decreased nearly 50% when the alveolar tracer con

The impact of tropical cyclones and water conservancy projects on island's flash floods.

The analysis of the influencing factors of flash floods, one of the most destructive natural disasters, is the basis of scientific disaster prevention and mitigation. There is little research considering the influence of tropical cyclones (TCs) and water conservancy projects on flash floods, which cannot be ignored in the island areas where flash floods often occur due to the complex influence of various factors. In this study, under the pressure-state-response framework (PSR framework), the factors affecting the distribution of flash floods on Hainan Island, China, from 1970 to 2010 were quan…

Epidemiology of floods in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review of health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Floods have affected 2.3 billion people worldwide in the last 20 years, and are associated with a wide range of negative health outcomes. Climate change is projected to increase the number of people exposed to floods due to more variable precipitation and rising sea levels. Vulnerability to floods is highly dependent on economic wellbeing and other societal factors. Therefore, this systematic review synthesizes the evidence on health effects of flood exposure among the population of sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We systematically searched two databases, Web of Science and PubMed, t…

Association between floods and typhoid fever in Yongzhou, China: Effects and vulnerable groups.

BACKGROUND: Little information about the effects of floods on typhoid fever is available in previous studies. This study aimed to examine the relationships between floods and typhoid fever and to identify the vulnerable groups in Yongzhou, China. METHODS: Weekly typhoid fever data, flood data and meteorological data during the flood season (April to September) from 2005 to 2012 were collected for this study. A Poisson generalized linear model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was conducted to quantify the lagged and cumulative effects of floods on typhoid fever, considering the…

Does flooding get worse with subsiding land? Investigating the impacts of land subsidence on flood inundation from Hurricane Harvey.

As one of the most devastating tropical storms, 2017 Hurricane Harvey caused severe flooding and damage in Houston, Texas. Besides enormous rainfall amount, land subsidence might be another contributing factor to the Harvey flood. However, few studies have numerically quantified the evolvement of land subsidence over decades, largely due to the lack of reliable methods to realistically estimate land subsidence both continuously and at high spatial resolution. Therefore, this study aims to investigate retrospective changes of regional topology due to 117 years (1900 to 2017) of land subsidence

Emerging investigator series: mercury mobility and methylmercury formation in a contaminated agricultural flood plain: influence of flooding and manure addition.

The fate and the methylation of mercury (Hg) in the terrestrial environment are still poorly understood and although the main drivers of release and methylation of mercury in soils are known (low redox potential and microbial carbon availability) their interactions are not well understood. This is of concern since many agriculturally used floodplains, where the recurring flooding and agricultural practices (e.g. manure amendments) may have an impact on the fate and the biomethylation of Hg, are at the same time Hg-contaminated. In this study, we modified and validated existing methods to extra

The framing of two major flood episodes in the Irish print news media: Implications for societal adaptation to living with flood risk.

Societal adaptation to flooding is a critical component of contemporary flood policy. Using content analysis, this article identifies how two major flooding episodes (2009 and 2014) are framed in the Irish broadsheet news media. The article considers the extent to which these frames reflect shifts in contemporary flood policy away from protection towards risk management, and the possible implications for adaptation to living with flood risk. Frames help us make sense of the social world, and within the media, framing is an essential tool for communication. Five frames were identified: flood re

Loss of life caused by the flooding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina: analysis of the relationship between flood characteristics and mortality.

In this article a preliminary analysis of the loss of life caused by Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans metropolitan area is presented. The hurricane caused more than 1,100 fatalities in the state of Louisiana. A preliminary data set that gives information on the recovery locations and individual characteristics for 771 fatalities has been analyzed. One-third of the analyzed fatalities occurred outside the flooded areas or in hospitals and shelters in the flooded area. These fatalities were due to the adverse public health situation that developed after the floods. Two-thirds of the analyzed…

Plant photosynthetic responses to drought, rewatering, and flooding.

The review discusses how plants modulate photosynthesis under contrasting water regimes, highlighting stress-specific limitations, recovery dynamics, and physiological indicators to inform breeding and management under climate change. Climate change is intensifying rainfall extremes, including prolonged droughts, sudden rewatering, and extended flooding, threatening crop productivity worldwide. Here, we present an integrative review synthesizing how major crops modulate photosynthesis under these contrasting water regimes. Drought restricts stomatal and mesophyll conductance, downregulates RuB

Understanding the Spectrum of Flood Syndrome: A Case Series.

Flood syndrome refers to ruptured umbilical hernias in patients with chronic ascites with underlying liver cirrhosis. These ruptures may introduce infection into the abdomen and hence require emergency surgery. However, these patients are at high risk during these procedures owing to coagulopathy, hypotension and electrolyte imbalances. In our series, we describe six patients who presented with varying degrees of severity and were treated with a standardised protocol of primary anatomic repair and drain placement. Furthermore, we assessed the Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) and Model for End-Stage L

Ascites with a Chance of Flooding: A Rare Complication of Cirrhosis.

Flood Syndrome, characterized by ruptured umbilical hernias with ascitic fluid leakage in decompensated liver cirrhosis, presents a rare but potentially fatal complication of cirrhotic liver disease. We present a case study of a patient with decompensated cirrhosis who underwent multiple medical encounters before the severity of his condition, characterized by ascitic fluid leakage, was recognized. Flood Syndrome was ultimately identified on admission to the hospital, prompting multidisciplinary interventions and discussions, including antibiotics, surgical consultation, and optimization for h
