Fibrillar deposits of the human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) are considered as a root of Type II diabetes mellitus. Fluorinated graphene quantum dots (FGQDs) are new carbon nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties containing highly electronegative F atoms. Distribution and absolute concentration of three kinds of fluoride/fluorine, i.e., free ionic, ionizable, and organic fluorine, in human whole blood and serum were determined. The method is based on low temperature oxygen plasma ashing, acid hydrolysis, gas chromatography using chlorotrimethylsilane, and fluoride ion-specific electrode. A large part (40%) of the total F is distributed in clot of the whole blood and 74% of the total F is in the form of organic fluorine.

Release behaviors of fluorine and chlorine during thermal treatments of two Chinese coals, DT and JC, were studied in a quartz tube reactor. The thermal treatments included temperature programmed decomposition (TPD, 300-1000 degrees C) in N2 and gasification (800-1100 degrees C) under a H2O or CO2 atmosphere. The TPD results show that F and Cl in the two coals can be classified into three forms of occurrence, evolving in three temperature ranges, 150350 degrees C, 350-750 dgrees C, and >870 degrees C. A partial switch in mechanism for the partial oxidation of alcohols on nickel surfaces can be induced by substitution of gamma-hydrogens with more electronegative fluorine atoms. While exclusive dehydrogenation to acetone via beta-hydride elimination from 2-propoxide surface species is seen with 2-propanol, some dehydration to 3,3,3-trfluoropropene is observed with 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol. The latter reaction involves a gamma-hydride elimination rate-limiting step.

A new synthesis is described for the routine production of 3,4-dihydroxy-6-[18F]fluoro-phenyl-L-alanine (6-[18F]fluoro-L-dopa). The reaction between [18F]fluorine gas and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (L-dopa) in liquid hydrogen fluoride gave 2-, 5-, and 6-[18F]fluoro-L-dopa. 6-[18F]Fluoro-L-dopa was isolated by reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. From 100 mCi [18F]F2, the method produces 3 mCi of 6-[18F]fluoro-L-dopa at the end of synthesis.
