In 19 healthy volunteers (9 men, 10 women) we studied the effect of drinking 1000 ml of water within 10 min on aqueous humor dynamics. Fluorescein was applied topically five times, 6 h before measurements. All readings were taken during the afternoon. The Wilcox-on signed-rank test was used to evaluate the statistical relevance of the data. Aqueous humor flow was measured 60 min before (F1) and 10 min (F2), 30 min (F3), 60 min (F4) and 90 min (F5) after drinking 11 of water. We evaluated the cytotoxic effects of mitomycin C (MMC) in rabbit eyes. A sponge soaked with MMC was placed on the bared sclera after conjunctival incision. We used four concentrations of MMC in distilled water: 0%, 0.04%, 0.1%, and 0.4%. MMC was applied to one eye only, with the fellow eye serving as control. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of temporary punctal occlusion on tear production, tear clearance, and ocular surface sensation in normal subjects.
METHODS: Noncomparative interventional case series. Punctal occlusion with silicone punctal plugs was performed on nine normal subjects without complaints of ocular irritation and no known history of ocular surface disease. The lower punctum of both eyes was occluded in five subjects. The upper and lower puncta of only one eye were occluded in four subjects. Corneal and conjunctival sensations were measured with the Cochet-Bonnet anesthesiometer.
