BACKGROUND: Nonfatal strangulation (NFS) is a high-lethality act commonly associated with intimate partner violence and sexual assault. Strangulation-specific knowledge among U.S. health care professionals outside of forensic settings is not well characterized.

At times a clinician must describe the size of a lesion when measurement presents difficulties. A 'guestimate' may then be recorded. We tested the accuracy of forensic clinicians (10 physicians and 1 nurse) in guestimating the sizes of ten test objects, comparing their performance with 13 individuals from other professions. The Abuse Assessment Screen has been used since 1987 to identify and assess for intimate partner violence in a wide variety of clinical and research settings. It has been translated and successfully used in at least 7 languages in addition to English. Meanwhile, a growing body of research indicates that nonlethal strangulation (commonly called "choking") is a significant form of intimate partner violence and that choking has substantial consequences for the health of the woman. This paper describes the modification of the Abuse Assessment Screen to include "choking."

Patient deaths in hospitals due to medical staff are very rare. In the autumn of 2006, preliminary proceedings were initiated against a nurse on account of an overdose of medication leading to death, administered during her care of the patient. In the course of these proceedings, exhibits relating to the deaths of a total of 13 patients who had died due to chemical-toxicological causes were reviewed. Nine of them were exhumed. BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a preventable national public health problem that results in adverse health consequences. Research suggests youth experiencing CSA are often of school age. Screening for early detection of health issues is integral to school nurse (SN) practice.
