Tarsal fracture dislocation with plantar dislocation of the navicular: a case study.

A rare case of fracture-dislocation of the midtarsal bones with plantar dislocation of the navicular, the latter not being fractured, is described in this article. The working mechanism produced is discussed in accordance with previously described classifications. Open reduction and osteosynthesis are necessary.

[Elbow dislocation with ipsilateral proximal radial shaft fracture and radial head dislocation].

Elbow dislocation with ipsilateral proximal radial shaft fracture and dislocated radial head is a rarely described injury. In this article we present the case of a 23-year-old man with this injury. After the initial diagnostics, the radial shaft fracture was osteosynthetically fixed, whereby the anatomical positions of all parts of the elbow joint were correctly aligned and the medial collateral ligament was reconstructed. After 4.5 months the radial shaft fracture was healed with nearly complete functional recovery of the upper extremity. Thus, a good outcome can be expected when all aspects

Case Report of Simultaneous Galeazzi Fracture Dislocation and Ipsilateral Scaphoid Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Although the Galeazzi fracture-dislocation is an uncommon forearm fracture in adults, scaphoid fracture is not a rare finding. Even though both injuries may result from the same mechanism, there is only one report in the literature describing a simultaneous Galeazzi fracture and ipsilateral scaphoid fracture. CASE REPORT: We report here the case of a 22-year-old male who presented to our emergency department with bilateral wrist trauma following a road traffic accident on his motorcycle. The patient was diagnosed with a Galeazzi fracture dislocation associated with an ipsilatera…

Ipsilateral intercondylar distal humerus fracture and Monteggia fracture-dislocation in adults.

We present two cases of ipsilateral Monteggia fracture-dislocations and intercondylar distal humerus fractures in adults. To our knowledge, this combination of injuries has not been described in skeletally mature individuals. Both patients were treated with rigid internal fixation of the bony injuries as well as early rehabilitation protocols. Despite the severity of the injuries, both patients had satisfactory results. Adherence to established internal fixation protocols is critical in the treatment of complex upper extremity injuries.

The crescent fracture: a posterior fracture dislocation of the sacroiliac joint.

Between October 1987 and August 1992, 22 patients with crescent fractures, a posterior fracture-dislocation of the sacroiliac joint, were admitted, treated, and available for review at Tampa General Hospital and The Hospital for Special Surgery. The purpose of the study was twofold: (a) to evaluate the incidence, severity, and pattern of associated injuries, and (b) to determine the efficacy of a treatment protocol using a posterior extrapelvic approach and extraarticular internal fixation. The study population was composed of 13 females and nine males; the average age was 25 years (range 10-5

Occult central acetabular fracture resulting in fracture-dislocation. A case report.

A 71-year-old white female experienced a nondisplaced right central acetabular fracture in a motor vehicle accident. Despite anteroposterior (AP) roentgenograms of the pelvis, Judet views, and plain tomograms, no fracture was detected. These negative findings did not entirely explain the continued presence of pain. The patient was treated with physical therapy and encouraged to bear weight on the leg as tolerated. The fracture then progressed to a central fracture dislocation readily apparent on AP views of the pelvis. This case illustrates the need for further diagnostic studies (bone scannin…

Transradial Perilunate Fracture-Dislocation With Lunotriquetral Coalition.

Perilunate fracture-dislocations are devastating injuries, and their occurrence in the presence of a congenital carpal coalition is exceedingly rare. This combination fundamentally alters normal wrist biomechanics and significantly complicates surgical decision-making. We present a case of a 52-year-old female with acute hand ischemia following a high-energy motorcycle collision. Radiographic evaluation revealed a transradial perilunate fracture-dislocation complicated by a unilateral Minnaar type 3 congenital lunotriquetral coalition. Emergent closed reduction was performed, which immediately

Bosworth ankle fracture-dislocation: current concept review.

Bosworth fracture (BF) is a special type of locked ankle fracture-dislocation, characterized by displacement of a fragment of the fractured fibula from the fibular notch behind the posterior surface of the distal tibia. BF is a complex injury affecting multiple structures of the ankle joint, which is still frequently misjudged even today, potentially leading to severe complications. CT examination, including 3D reconstructions, should be the diagnostic standard in BF, as it provides a complete picture of the fracture pathoanatomy, most prominently the morphology of the frequently associated po

Pediatric Lisfranc Fracture-Dislocation: A Case Report.

Lisfranc injury is extremely rare in the pediatric population and little evidence exists to guide the treatment at this age. We present a clinical case of a rare Lisfranc fracture-dislocation at pediatric age. An 11-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department, in October 2020, after a motorcycle incident. He was diagnosed with a Lisfranc fracture-dislocation of the right foot: Myerson type B2. Fourteen days after the injury, he underwent surgical treatment with open reduction and internal fixation with 3.5 mm solid fully threaded screws. At 18 months postoperative, the patient was a

An Unusual Inverted Talar Neck Fracture-Dislocation.

Talar neck fractures occur on a continuum of injury severity. Hawkins classification, later modified by Canale, is the gold standard method of describing talar neck fractures by the degree of dislocation. It has proven to be clinically relevant in predicting risk of osteonecrosis. Despite its merits, talar neck fractures present on a wide spectrum of involvement of the body and neck, dislocation, and concomitant injuries, making every situation a challenge in treatment. We present a unique case of a talar neck fracture in which the talar dome had dislocated and inverted 180°, which is not desc

Transverse translunate fracture-dislocation: A rare injury.

Perilunate fracture-dislocation is rare. We report the case of a 24-year-old male who fell from his motorcycle and presented with a transverse lunate fracture with perilunate ligament damage. The initial diagnosis based on X-rays was confirmed by CT scan. A dorsal approach was used to obtain good reduction, double screw fixation and ligament reinsertion protected by temporary K-wires. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of transverse lunate fracture within perilunate fracture-dislocation. The patient returned to normal activities after 6 months.

Elbow dislocation with ipsilateral distal radius fracture.

Elbow dislocation associated with ipsilateral distal radius fracture is a rare pattern of injury, although it is common for elbow dislocation and forearm fractures to occur separately. We report a rare case of a 20-year-old male who had a posterior elbow dislocation and ipsilateral distal radius fracture. Elbow dislocation was first reduced in extension and distal radius fracture was then reduced in flexion. Both the injuries were conservatively managed. At 6 months follow-up, the patient had no pain in his elbow and minimal pain in his wrist on heavy lifting and had resumed his work as a labo

Adolescent patellar osteochondral fracture following patellar dislocation.

PURPOSE: Patellar dislocations in adolescents may cause osteochondral fractures of the patella. The aim of this study was to review the outcomes of adolescent patients who underwent surgical intervention for patellar osteochondral fracture following patellar dislocation. METHODS: Nine patients who underwent surgery for osteochondral fracture of the patella following dislocation were identified retrospectively. Following arthroscopic examination, if the fragment was large enough to support fixation, headless screws or bioabsorbable pins were used. Otherwise, the loose body was excised, and the

A transcuneiform fracture-dislocation of the midfoot.

Isolated fractures of the ossa cuneiformia are rare fractures of the foot and they usually occur in the context of a direct trauma. We report about a patient with a dislocation of the midfoot and concomitant fractures of the cuneiforme bones I-III due a car traffic accident. X-rays of the foot confirmed a lateral dislocation of the midfoot with multiple fractures of all ossa cuneiformia. An anterior-longitudinal approach was performed to access the ossa cuneiformia and the bases of the metatarsalia. Comminuted fractures of all ossa cuneiformia, a dislocation of the metatarsal bones I-III and a

Transverse fracture and dislocation at the sacrum.

We present a rare case of fracture-dislocation at the level of the first sacral (S1) and second sacral (S2) vertebrae. The S1 was displaced forward into the pelvic cavity and was located just in front of the S2. Because the patient also had extensive neurological injury to the lumbar plexus and instability of the pelvic ring, surgery to stabilize the pelvis and to decompress the lumbar plexus was performed. The surgery was successful and the patient experienced marked improvement in neurological function.

Posterior atlantoaxial dislocation without fracture. Case report.

Posterior dislocation of the atlas onto the axis without related fracture of the odontoid process is a very rare traumatic condition of which five cases have been previously reported. The authors present a sixth case in which management was different from the others. The patient was successfully treated by open reduction of the dislocation and C1-2 transarticular screw fixation. The rarity of the lesion, the differences in diagnostic studies, and the successful treatment by safe intraoperative reduction and fixation are factors of interest in this case.
