During the period August, 1979 to December, 1992, 14 patients with the Fat Embolism Syndrome (FES) were admitted to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). Two were females and 12 males, their ages ranging from 18 to 78 years, with a median age of 23.5 years. All had lower limb long bone fractures. Clinical features included fever, tachypnoea, confusion and drowsiness. They were all hypoxaemic; 9 required Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission and, of these, 4 needed ventilatory support. Five patients became comatose, 4 of whom developed decerebrate posturing. There was one death from

The two patients described in this report demonstrate retrobulbar haemorrhage as a complication of zygomatic bone fracture. Successful treatment of this rare but very serious complication involves urgent consultation with an ophthalmology service, and immediate medical and surgical management. It is extremely important to check the vision of patients with zygomatic bone fracture, before and after surgery, and consideration should be given to obtaining an ophthalmology opinion for all fractures involving the orbit. A simple examination, which every dentist should be able to perform, should incl

The value of isotope scanning in patients with clinical signs of fracture of the carpal scaphoid bone and negative or non-diagnostic initial radiographs was examined. 30 patients were examined using both radiography and isotope scanning. A normal scan excludes a fracture. Increased activity localized to the scaphoid bone indicates a fracture. 9 patients had fracture of the scaphoid evident on bone scans within 2 weeks of the injury. It took 2-6 weeks before these fractures showed up on radiographs.

Antihypertensive drugs are among the most documented regimens worldwide with an overall survival and cardioprotective benefit. However, there is evidence that they cause symptoms of orthostatic hypotension (i.e., dizziness and syncope) placing patients at risk for falls and fall-related injuries such as bone fractures. Moreover, it seems that they might impact bone metabolism and architecture impairing bone health. The aim of this review was to summarize the accumulative literature exploring any potential association between several antihypertensive medications including diuretics, renin-angio

The long-term impact of neurotological symptoms after a temporal bone fracture (TBF), including facial nerve palsy (FP), hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness on the quality of life of patients is often underevaluated. Thus, we retrospectively assessed 30 patients with TBF (26 men and 4 women) in our university tertiary referral center. They participated from injury onset to the final follow-up, over an 18-month period. Quality of life was estimated using validated questionnaires, such as the Facial Disability Index (FDI: physical and social), Hearing Handicap Inventory (HHI), Tinnitus Handica

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of temporal bone fractures (TBF) is based on radiological imaging. The most widely used classification divides fractures into longitudinal, transverse, and mixed. In recent years, other classifications have emerged to better predict clinical manifestations.
OBJECTIVES: To review computed tomography (CT) images of TBF, define their radiological pattern, and study the concordance of the observed findings with those described in the radiological report. To analyse the association between fracture types and clinical findings. To study the impact of mastoid pneumatizati

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: In response to rapid spread of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and lack of vaccine or effective treatment for COVID-19 disease, governments imposed measures that resulted in a shift from work and school to isolation at home. Studies from three countries (China, Belgium and the United States) report the consequences on traumatic bone fractures.
COMMENT: The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a widespread change to a relative sedentary lifestyle and decreased exposure to light (vitamin D). A consequence of the stay-at-home policies is a negative change in bone-health and

Point-of-care ultrasound may be an alternative to radiographs for diagnosing long bone fractures when medical resources are limited. Safe and timesaving, ultrasound also can be used in the ED as a screening tool for suspected long bone fractures and can detect associated musculoskeletal injuries. Ultrasound can be used in radiation-sensitive patients such as children and pregnant patients.Studies have found that clinicians using ultrasound can detect long bone fractures with an average 90% sensitivity and specificity after an average of 1 to 4 hours total of didactic and practical training. Pathological fractures of long tubular bones are stabilized with conventional implants. Essentially, plates and intramedullary nails are used for stabilization and are two different techniques, which compete with each other with respect to the surgical treatment. A large number of such means of osteosynthesis are commercially available but are primarily focused on acute fractures in otherwise biologically healthy bones. The pathological fracture or the treatment of impending pathological fractures due to metastatic osteolysis differs from the treatment of healthy bones in some fundamental aspe

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of different sports on stress fractures among adolescents during a 9-month follow-up period. The sample was composed of 184 adolescents divided into three groups (impact sports [n = 102]; swimming [n = 35]; non-sports [n = 47]). The occurrence of stress fracture was reported by participants and coaches. As potential confounders we considered age, sex, resistance training, body composition variables and age at peak of height velocity. There were 13 adolescents who reported fractures during the 9-month period. Bone mineral density

Zygomatic bone and arch fractures are among the most common facial fractures treated by facial plastic surgeons. Controversy still remains regarding the optimal management of these fractures. Computed tomographic scanning (including three-dimensional reconstruction) represent a fundamental tool for diagnosis and treatment planning of zygomatic fractures. Main indications for treatment are functional impairment, cosmetic deformity, or both. Fracture reduction can be performed through an open or closed approach depending on the amount of exposure necessary to achieve accurate reduction. The comm

BACKGROUND: Malignant bone tumors should be treated within interdisciplinary treatment concepts. The prognosis of pathological fractures is on the whole relatively poor because the fracture is indicative of a large and highly aggressive tumor and the hematoma associated with the fracture could possibly result in spreading of the tumor into the surrounding soft tissues.
OBJECTIVES: This article summarizes the current interdisciplinary treatment concepts under special consideration of pathological fractures in primary bone tumors.
METHODS: A selective literature search was carried out taking o

INTRODUCTION: Rapid identification of fractures of long bones is prudent, since associated bleeding and neurovascular compromise can cause significant morbidity and mortality. We describe two patients who presented to the Emergency Department with orthopedic trauma and underwent bedside ultrasound of the affected extremity. Ultrasound rapidly revealed fractures in both patients, and led to early treatment and disposition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rapid bedside ultrasound of long bones was performed on affected extremities and compared to X-rays.
CONCLUSION: Bedside ultrasonography of long bone

BACKGROUND: Residual diplopia (RD) is the main post-treatment complication of orbital bone fracture (OBF) reduction. The cause of RD is varied and often related to the degree of inflammation, surgical timing, graft requirement, and trauma to orbital musculature, fat, as well as nerves. The exact prevalence of these and the influence of these factors on RD is not widely reported in literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted from January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2011. Sixty nine patients fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in this study.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder that predisposes individuals to increased risk of fracture. However, most osteoporotic fractures occur in women who do not meet criteria for osteoporosis. Hence, bone density, by itself, is a relatively poor predictor of fracture. Age and age-related factors are now recognized as increasingly important in determining fracture risk. Osteoporotic fractures are associated with increased disability and mortality, suggesting that osteoporosis may be a clinical manifestation of an underlying disease process affecting multiple systems. The systems affected, the mus
