Urethral strictures are a common cause of urinary obstruction which can be treated with surgical resection. Frozen sections are rare and pose a diagnostic challenge to pathologists due to the presence of benign lesions such as nephrogenic adenoma. We retrospectively examined all specimens of urethral stricture resections submitted to pathology at our institution from 2012 to 2022 (n = 258). Final pathology reports were searched to identify patients with dysplasia, carcinoma, or nephrogenic adenoma. When available, frozen section reports were also examined and compared to the final report, and …

IMPORTANCE: For parotid lesions, the high accuracy and utility of intraoperative frozen section (FS) pathology, compared with permanent section pathology, facilitates intraoperative decision making about the extent of surgery required.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the accuracy and utility of FS pathology of parotid lesions as one factor in intraoperative decision making.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective review of patients undergoing parotidectomy at a tertiary care center.
INTERVENTIONS: Evaluation of the accuracy of FS pathology for parotid surgery by comparing FS pathology re

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of frozen section tests at different anatomical sites performed in an academic department of pathology.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study from a computerized database of all frozen section tests. These diagnoses were compared to definite paraffin, used as controls. The tests were divided into three groups: inconclusive, consistent and inconsistent, the latter being subdivided into false positives and false negatives. The main indications for examinations and anatomical sites involved with diagnostic disagreements were also analyzed.
RESULTS: Four

BACKGROUND: The role of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in salivary gland lesions as a preoperative diagnosis has always been under scrutiny. Several studies have shown that frozen section (FS) is accurate for pathological diagnosis and decision-making during the surgery. This study has been carried out to assess the accuracy of FNA and FS in parotid surgeries.
METHODS: All parotid lesions removed between July 1998 and June 2003 by the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck unit at Monash Medical Centre were reviewed. FNA, FS and definitive pathology were collected and discrepancies were id

AIMS: Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) is a well-described fulminant fungal infection that presents acutely in patients with ketoacidosis and immunosuppression. Very early diagnosis, established with the demonstration of characterised hyphae in tissues, greatly improves the prognosis of RCM. In this regard, the specificity and the sensitivity of frozen section for the diagnosis and the surgical debridement of RCM were evaluated in this study.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Frozen section was performed for the diagnosis (six of seven cases) and surgical treatment (three of seven cases) of RCM. In all ca

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of parathyroid gland identification and the need for routine frozen section examination before parathyroid autotransplantation during thyroidectomy.
DESIGN: A prospective case series.
SETTING: An endocrine surgical unit.
PATIENTS: From January 1, 1995, to December 31, 1997, parathyroid autotransplantation was attempted for devascularized or inadvertently removed glands in 152 (33.7%) of 450 patients during thyroidectomy. Before autotransplantation, a biopsy specimen of the transplanted tissue was sent for histological examination without frozen section co

PURPOSE: Frozen section analysis of the distal ureteral margins is commonly performed at cystectomy to exclude involvement of tumor in retained ureter. We reviewed our experience with 101 consecutive cystectomies to determine the contemporary incidence and clinical significance of the urothelial abnormalities detected by frozen section analysis performed at operation.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: The pathology reports for 101 patients treated with nerve sparing cystectomy between 1982 and 1989 were reviewed. Frozen section and final ureteral analyses were compared.
RESULTS: Of the patients 8% had

Frozen section examination was performed on 385 donor livers before transplantation. Exclusion criteria were applied to the donor livers examined to exclude potentially dysfunctional livers. The exclusion criteria included the following: severe macrovesicular steatosis, ischemic necrosis, prominent chronic portal inflammation, prominent periductular fibrosis, granulomatous inflammation, bridging fibrosis, and malignancy. Twenty-seven of the 385 donor livers examined were excluded before transplantation. The following histologic features were present in the excluded livers: severe steatosis (22

We evaluated the reliability of intraoperative frozen section histology in 149 mediastinal tumours of which 106 lesions were localized in the anterior, 18 in the central and 25 in the posterior mediastinum. Gross non-resectability was ruled out by preoperative imaging. No preoperative cytological or histological diagnosis was obtained in any case. At thoracotomy, 3 biopsies from 3 different sites of the tumour were processed for frozen section as well as for paraffin histology and immunohistochemistry. In 67 of 73 benign lesions (91%), the intraoperative diagnosis was correct, 5 cases could no

Whether a frozen section of a breast biopsy is indicated or not, should be decided by the clinician and pathologist together. The accuracy rate of frozen section diagnoses in cases of invasive carcinoma is close to 100%. Palpation, mammography, and cytologic examination should precede frozen section. Selection of well-preserved tumor tissue by the pathologist occurs at the time of frozen section. Breast tissue of nontumorous lesions, such as fibrocystic disease, is best examined by cytology and paraffin sections.

Gallbladder metastases are rare and the clinical presentations are often nonspecific. Intra-operative gross and frozen section diagnosis can be particularly challenging. Here we present three cases and reviewed the patients' clinical, gross, frozen, and final pathology findings. Patient one is a 59-year-old male with a history of clear cell renal cell carcinoma status post partial nephrectomy seven years ago. Surveillance imaging showed two small gallbladder polyps. Intra-operative gross examination showed gallbladder with a firm, polypoid area and two detached nodules. Frozen sections of the …

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma is an uncommon benign, although potentially recurrent mesothelial lesion that occurs in the peritoneum of women over a wide age range. We recently encountered an incidental case sent for frozen section at the time of hysterectomy for endometrial carcinoma. Familiarity with this lesion will help prevent overinterpretation as a serous carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Although there have been several reports of the diagnostic accuracy of frozen section biopsy (FSB) for parotid gland tumors, few studies have focused on its diagnostic accuracy for submandibular gland tumors.
AIM/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the necessity of FSB with regard to its diagnostic accuracy for submandibular gland tumors (SGTs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 42 SGT patients underwent both fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and FSB between 2005 and 2020. The results of FNAC and FSB were analyzed and compared with the final histological diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: Cancers of the adnexae, including ovarian and fallopian tube, constitute the eighth most common cancers among women worldwide. Surgery remains the cornerstone in the management of ovarian cancer. Intraoperative frozen section diagnosis of ovarian tumors is widely used in making this distinction and to decide the course of surgery. Therefore, the accuracy of this technique is very important. The aim was to determine the overall accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of frozen section for ovarian tumors and to evaluate the role of frozen section in the surgical mana

Frozen section intraoperative consultation is a well-established means of evaluating brain tumors at the time of surgery. Limitations to the procedure are also well recognized resulting in less than perfect specificity of diagnosis. This study retrospectively reviewed 424 consecutive meningioma cases (N = 310 females; mean age 57.3 years) to examine concordance between frozen section evaluation of meningioma subtype and grade as compared with the final diagnosis subtype and grade. A discrepancy between frozen section diagnosis and final diagnosis was observed in 114 (26.9%) of cases. Of the WH

INTRODUCTION: Frozen section (FS) analysis used to be the principal examination guiding surgical strategy. The development and recent standardization of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) challenges it as a systematic attitude. The present study assessed the current contribution of FS, comparing it with FNAC as a diagnostic tool guiding surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective diagnostic study analyzed 1515 thyroid samples over a 6-year period. Two hundred and fifty-two of the patients had undergone both FNAC (analyzed in our unit) and FS, revealing 69 cancers.
RESULTS: The sensiti
