BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy is the most prevalent motor disorder among children. Despite extensive studies on motor modularity of gait of children with cerebral palsy, kinematic modularity of their gait has not been addressed which is the main goal of this study.
METHODS: The kinematics of the gait of 13 typical development children and 188 children with cerebral palsy was captured and analyzed, where the cerebral palsy children were grouped into True, Jump, Apparent, and Crouch. Non-negative matrix factorization method was used to extract the kinematic modulus of each group, which were then c

Locomotive changes are often associated with disease or injury, and these changes can be quantified through gait analysis. Gait analysis has been applied to preclinical studies, providing quantitative behavioural assessment with a reasonable clinical analogue. However, available gait analysis technology for small animals is somewhat limited. Furthermore, technological and analytical challenges can limit the effectiveness of preclinical gait analysis. The Gait Analysis Instrumentation and Technology Optimized for Rodents (GAITOR) Suite is designed to increase the accessibility of preclinical ga…

Evaluating functional performance of spinal cord injury (SCI) rat models is essential for the development of novel treatments and breakthroughs. However, due to the variety of functional analysis methods available - each with its own strengths and weaknesses - it can be challenging to choose the most appropriate functional analysis test for the animal model. Therefore, we analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of five methods in order to determine which test is not only accurate and easily reproducible, but also relatively inexpensive so that it can be adopted universally. When comparing the Ba

Gait disturbances are common in the rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD) by administrating 6-hydroxydopamine. However, few studies have sim … data showed that the joint angle decreased at the toe contact stage. We conclude that the proposed gait analysis method can be used to precisely detect locomotor function changes in PD rats, which is useful for objective assessments of investigating novel treatments for PD animal model.

Body-worn kinematic sensors have been widely proposed as the optimal solution for portable, low cost, ambulatory monitoring of gait. This study aims to evaluate an adaptive gyroscope-based algorithm for automated temporal gait analysis using body-worn wireless gyroscopes. Gyroscope data from nine healthy adult subjects performing four walks at four different speeds were then compared against data acquired simultaneously using two force plates and an optical motion capture system. Data from a poliomyelitis patient, exhibiting pathological gait walking with and without the aid of a crutch, were …

The study gives up findings of ground reaction force (GRF) measurement in traumatic transtibial amputees (TT) equipped with prosthesis. Results disclose significant asymmetries between the amputated and healthy legs, as well as between transtibial amputees and non-disabled persons. Decreased GRF of prosthesis (max. horizontal force Fx2 and medio-lateral Fy1 (p < 0.05), max. vertical force Fz1 during the loading response phase and Fz 3 - max. vertical force in late terminal stance; Fx 1 - max. horizontal force and Fy 2 - max. lateral force) were registered in comparison to healthy legs of amput

BACKGROUND: With the increasing use of total ankle prostheses, kinematic analysis of these implants is important to our understanding of their specific biomechanics. Fluoroscopic analysis as used in this study has distinct advantages over previous experimental approaches and allows kinematic determination in vivo of dynamic weightbearing motions.
METHODS: Ten patients with unilateral Agility (Depuy, A Johnson & Johnson Company, Warsaw, IN) total ankle replacements were tested using video fluoroscopy in weightbearing dynamic gait conditions. Their prosthetic ankle and normal ankle kinematics w

Due to recent improvements in prosthetic limb componentry, through-the-knee (knee disarticulation) amputation has gained new interest for rehabilitation-minded amputation surgeons. Recent objective scientific studies from our gait analysis laboratory have described the walking characteristics of peripheral vascular insufficiency through-knee amputees, and have compared their function with similar patients amputated above (transfemoral), or below (trans-tibial), the knee joint. This paper provides a summary of that available information.

Seven different suspension systems for below-knee prostheses were tested on 20 adult, unilateral amputees. All subjects walked with a prosthesis. Gait was evaluated with regard to longitudinal and vertical accelerations of the body, forward velocity, axial (piston) movement of amputated limb in the socket, and knee movement. Harmonic analyses of variable waveforms provided the primary method to discriminate performances among the suspensions. The appropriateness of a given suspension system depended on both the length and the shape of the residual limb.

Spatiotemporal gait analysis is widely used in clinical and research settings to assess human movement. Diverse methods exist to obtain such data, but simple and versatile solutions suitable for real-world assessment are missing. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a method to perform spatiotemporal gait analysis using data collected by smart glasses worn by an observer accompanying and looking at a walking subject. The method, combining monocular 3D pose estimation and visual-inertial odometry, was assessed based on 608 walking sequences in varied indoor and outdoor conditions (54 health…

Gait analysis serves as a critical diagnostic tool for identifying neurologic and musculoskeletal damage. Traditional manual analysis of motion data, however, is labor-intensive and heavily reliant on the expertise and judgment of the therapist. This study introduces a binary classification method for the quantitative assessment of gait impairments, specifically focusing on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a prevalent and fatal neuromuscular genetic disorder. The research compares spatiotemporal and sagittal kinematic gait features derived from 2D and 3D human pose estimation trajectories ag…

Sagittal plane alignment of the foot presents challenges when the subject wears shoes during gait analysis. Typically, visual alignment is performed by positioning two markers, the heel and toe markers, aligned with the foot within the shoe. Alternatively, software alignment is possible when the sole of the shoe lies parallel to the ground, and the change in the shoe's sole thickness is measured and entered as a parameter. The aim of this technical note was to evaluate the accuracy of visual and software foot alignment during shod gait analysis. We calculated the static standing ankle angles o…

The purpose of this study was to analyze the alterations in frontal-plane hindfoot motion and in plantar pressure in 2 patients (3 feet) after talonavicular joint fusion. Three-dimensional movement of the hindfoot was recorded by using an electromagnetic motion analysis system. The results indicated that frontal-plane hindfoot motion of the operative foot was substantially reduced during the stance phase of walking. In addition, each patient's frontal-plane hindfoot angle while in the resting standing position was decreased and plantar pressure under the medial longitudinal arch was reduced af
