Giant ganglionic cyst of the hip as a rare cause of sciatica.

Although ganglionic cysts located at the hip joint are described infrequently, those found in this region are usually small, deep-seated, and asymptomatic. Occasionally, however, a large ganglionic cyst of the hip area is observed that becomes symptomatic following compression of adjacent neurovascular bundles. In this report, the authors describe a 51-year-old man with symptoms of sciatica caused by a giant ganglionic cyst of the posterior hip joint. Because of its intermuscular location, the cyst was not palpable, and was probably misdiagnosed previously as a herniated disc of the lumbar spi

Comparison of Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Diagnosing Peripheral Intraneural Ganglion Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, the imaging diagnosis of peripheral intraneural ganglion cysts (IGCs) has primarily relied on MRI. However, few reports in the literature have evaluated peripheral IGCs using high-frequency ultrasound. METHODS: From January 2013 to December 2023, 75 consecutive patients seen in Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University with symptoms related to the peripheral nerves and clinically suspected of having peripheral IGCs were included. Ultrasound and MRI were used to assess the peripheral nerves. The ultrasonographic and MRI images of IG…

Bilateral Hoffa's Fat Pad Ganglion Cysts with Subcutaneous Extension: A Rare Case Report.

Ganglion cysts within Hoffa's fat pad are an uncommon cause of anterior knee pain, with bilateral involvement being very rare. We report a unique case of a 42-year-old female presenting with bilateral Hoffa's fat pad ganglion cysts, complicated by subcutaneous extension and deep infrapatellar bursitis on the left side. Ultrasound-guided aspiration with corticosteroid injection provided symptomatic relief. This case highlights a rare combination of findings which was not previously documented in the literature and this report underscores the importance of bilateral ultrasound scan in diagnosis …

Ganglion Cysts of the Proximal Tibiofibular Joint: Low Risk of Recurrence After Total Cyst Excision.

BACKGROUND: Peroneal nerve neuropathy due to compression from tumors or tumor-like lesions such as ganglion cysts is rare. Few case series have been published and reported local recurrence rates are high, while secondary procedures are frequently employed. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What are the demographics of patients with ganglion cysts of the proximal tibiofibular joint, and what proportion of them present with intraneural cysts and peroneal nerve palsy? (2) What Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scores do patients with this condition achieve after decompression surgery with removal of th…

Angiofibroma of Knee Masquerading as Ganglion Cyst - A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Angiofibroma of soft tissue (AFST) is a rare benign neoplasm characterized by distinctive histopathological and genetic features. It commonly arises in the lower extremities but can present in atypical locations, complicating diagnosis. CASE REPORT: A 77-year-old male with a 10-year history of bilateral knee pain and 6-month history of right knee swelling was examined. Physical assessment revealed bilateral knee varus deformity and a palpable, variable-consistency mass in the anteromedial aspect of the right knee. Radiographs indicated severe osteoarthritis and soft-tissue swell

Foot Drop Caused by an Intraneural Ganglion Cyst: A Case Report.

Foot drop (FD) refers to a clinical picture characterized by the inability to lift the foot against gravity due to weakness of the dorsiflexor muscles. Patients with FD typically present with an abnormal gait marked by exaggerated flexion of the knee and hip joints, along with internal rotation of the foot, which may increase the risk of falls and injuries. Intraneural ganglion cysts are benign, fluid-filled lesions located within the epineurium of peripheral nerves. We report the case of a 22-year-old male who presented with right lower limb pain and numbness and later developed acute weaknes…

Beyond Osteoarthritis: A Case of a Massive Intraarticular Ganglion Cyst in the Knee.

Intraarticular ganglion cysts of the knee are rare, typically incidental findings, and often asymptomatic. However, large cysts may be of clinical interest due to their potential mass effect on surrounding structures. We present the case of a 54-year-old female with a three-year history of osteoarthritis-related knee pain unresponsive to conservative management who ultimately underwent a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Preoperative imaging revealed a massive, multiloculated intraarticular ganglion cyst extending from Hoffa's fat pad to the medial joint capsule. While the cyst did not interfere …

An Extra-articular Ganglion Cyst with Multiple Fluid-fluid Levels.

INTRODUCTION: Ganglion cysts are the knee's most common benign soft tissue tumors. Ganglion cysts are seen as multiloculated fluid collections on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and fluid-fluid levels are not an expected finding. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female patient presented with swelling in her right knee. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a multiseptated cyst with multiple fluid-fluid levels within the anterior of the right patellar tendon. Open surgical excision was performed, and the pedicle of the cyst was dissected. The histopathology revealed a ganglion cyst with hemorr…

Recurrent ganglion cyst in the anterolateral portal following knee arthroscopy.

Ganglion cysts (GC) are an uncommon complication following arthroscopic knee surgery. Due to high rates of recurrence following GC resection, many symptomatic patients can experience pain and discomfort for years. The presence of a GC at the site of an arthroscopic knee portal has only been reported once before in the literature. This case report details the history, physical and treatment of an active-duty soldier who had undergone various aspirations and surgical resections with limited improvement until the most recent operative intervention. At 18 months postoperatively, the patient had no…

Upper Extremity Arteriovenous Malformation Masquerading as a Biceps Ganglion Cyst.

A 71-year-old male presented to the clinic with two multiloculated cystic masses located over the distal bicep of his left upper extremity, causing discomfort when flexing the extremity. Referral and point-of-care ultrasound at an outside location suggested cystic masses that were consistent with that of a ganglion cyst. Physical exam and clinical presentation were also consistent with this diagnosis. Due to the patient's symptomatic presentation, surgical intervention was proposed, and the patient consented. Intraoperatively, it was discovered that the patient's mass was unexpectedly due to a

Lumbar spinal ganglion cyst: A systematic review with case illustration.

PURPOSE: Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissue lesions found in joints, most commonly wrists. The incidence for juxtafacet cysts, the condition under which spinal ganglion cysts are categorized, is between 0.06% and 5.8%. Spinal ganglion cysts often arise in the most mobile segment of the lumbar spine, L4-L5. Patients commonly present with pain, radiculopathy, and weakness. Conservative management is used, but surgical resection is the most common treatment modality. We aim to review the literature and present a rare case of an L2-L3 situated spinal ganglion cyst, treated with maximal safe res…

Recurrent Peroneal Intraneural Ganglion Cyst: Management and Review of the Literature.

Intraneural ganglion cysts have been reported to affect the common peroneal nerve. Peroneal intraneural ganglion cysts are managed through surgical intervention. Despite surgical intervention, intraneural ganglion cysts can recur. Common intraneural ganglion cyst recurrence patterns have been proposed based on the initial surgical management of the cyst. These patterns all emphasize the importance of treatment of the proximal tibiofibular (TF) joint to reduce the risk of cyst recurrence. Although joint resection is the favored intervention in the literature, joint arthrodesis is an option for …

Atraumatic, Progressive, and Painful Elbow Contracture From a Ganglion Cyst.

Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissue tumors that often occur adjacent to joints or tendons. We report a case of an elbow joint ganglion cyst in a patient who presented with a painful, progressive elbow contracture. The patient was successfully treated with resection of the subbrachialis ganglion cyst combined with an anterior capsular release and an ulnar nerve decompression to recover elbow motion. This case highlights the value of advanced imaging in patients presenting with an atraumatic, painful, and progressive elbow contracture.

Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint with intradural extension: case report.

Intracranial extension of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ganglion cysts is very rare. Two previously reported cases presented clinically due to effects on cranial nerves and had obvious association with the TMJ on imaging. To the authors' knowledge, intracranial extension of a TMJ ganglion cyst presenting with seizures and mimicking a primary brain tumor has not been previously reported. The patient underwent resection of a presumptive primary cystic temporal lobe tumor, but the lesion had histopathological features of a nonneoplastic cyst with a myxoid content. He was followed with serial imag…

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Ganglion Cyst and Mucoid Degeneration: A Review.

Mucoid degeneration and ganglion cyst are two distinct non-traumatic lesions of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that most commonly occur discretely but occasionally coexist. They are relatively uncommon, and their exact aetiopathogenesis is still not clear. ACL ganglion cyst occurs more frequently among relatively younger patients compared to mucoid degeneration. They could be asymptomatic and discovered incidentally while evaluating the knee for other pathologies. Symptomatic cases of the two conditions present with nonspecific chronic pain, painful limitation of terminal flexion and ext
