BACKGROUND: In patients with both duodenal and biliary obstruction in whom endoscopic drainage is not feasible, the standard approach has been gastroenterostomy plus biliodigestive anastomosis. We present our results of percutaneous biliary drainage in combination with gastroenterostomy.

In 204 patients with cancer of the pancreas (1973-1984), palliative treatment in 157 non-resectable tumors is analyzed retrospectively. 124 patients underwent biliodigestive anastomosis, 11 with simultaneous gastroenterostomy. The need for drainage after truncal or selective vagotomy is well accepted, but there is no agreement on the most suitable type of drainage procedure. From January 1963 to December 1965 inclusive 192 men with duodenal ulcer were treated by elective truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty with one death. Marginal ulcer is a well-known complication of gastroenterostomy.
