Gender inequality and burden of orofacial clefts in the Eastern Mediterranean region: findings from global burden of disease study 1990-2019.

BACKGROUND: Gender inequality may be associated with the burden of orofacial clefts (OFCs), particularly in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). To investigate the OFCs' burden and its association with gender inequality in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR). METHODS: Country-specific data on the OFCs' prevalence and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) from 1990 to 2019 were gathered from the Global Burden of Disease database by age and gender. Estimated annual percentage change (EAPCs) was used to investigate the OFCs' trends. The association of the Gender Inequality Index (GII) wi

National-, institutional-, and individual-level determinants of psychiatric research excellence: Analysis of Stanford-Elsevier lists of the top 2 % scholars worldwide (2017-2023).

BACKGROUND: Research excellence is increasingly used as a benchmark for academic evaluation in medical sciences, including psychiatry. However, bibliometric analyses often prioritize productivity over quality. This study examined national, institutional, and individual determinants of psychiatric research excellence using a multi-level ecological framework. METHODS: We analyzed the Stanford-Elsevier Lists of the top 2 % scholars (2017-2023), incorporating 51 independent variables. These included: (a) national determinants grouped into five domains (mental healthcare, gender equity, socioecono…

Gender equality and disease burden in 25 EU member states, 2006-2023: a fixed-effects panel analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gender equality is widely regarded as a social determinant of population health, but most evidence is cross-sectional or based on differences between countries. Whether within-country changes in gender equality are associated with the magnitude or composition of disease burden remains unclear, particularly in high-income settings. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether within-country changes in gender equality, measured by the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI), were associated with age-standardized all-cause disease-burden magnitude and mortality-morbidity composition in 25 EU member states f

Unintended pregnancy and gender inequality worldwide: an ecological analysis.

Unintended pregnancy compromises many women's and girls' ability to pursue the lives that they want. The conditional unintended pregnancy rate (CUPR) is a measure of unintended pregnancy among women who wish to avoid getting pregnant. Using the CUPR, we explore the relationship between gender inequality and unintended pregnancy across 132 countries. We used gender inequality indicators from the UNDP Human Development Report and estimates of the incidence of unintended pregnancy published by the Guttmacher Institute and WHO. We regressed the CUPR on several measures of gender inequality using l

"Equal pay for equal work": Exploring the gender pay gap in radiology.

Among the enduring disparities confronting the United States is the gender pay gap. Women experience lower wages than their male peers in nearly every major occupation, including medicine, and this further underscores how gender-based inequities within the practice of radiology are wide regarding pay, promotion opportunities, and leadership representation in diagnostic and interventional radiology. This review article analyzes the historical and current data for the gender pay gap in radiology relative to other medical specialties, as well as the influence of other intersecting factors, such a

Gender composition of spasticity-related clinical practice guideline authorship positions.

BACKGROUND: The authors of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are considered topic experts and specialists. Studies to date have disproportionately found that women are underrepresented in CPG authorship, but no studies have investigated CPGs on spasticity published in the recent literature. OBJECTIVE: To determine the gender composition of author positions on spasticity-related CPGs published from 2014 to 2023. DESIGN: Retrospective review of literature. SETTING: Systematic literature search using PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL databases for spasticity-related CPGs available in English and pu

Published Support for Wellness, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Among Internal Medicine Residency Program Websites.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to review internal medicine residency program websites in the United States based on their published support for wellness, diversity, equity, and inclusion concepts. Inclusion of wellness, diversity, equity, and inclusion on program websites can serve as critical student benchmarks, and it may be paramount to optimize residency program websites accordingly. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of the websites of 597 internal medicine residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education between March 25 and

The influence of gender attitudes on contraceptive use in Tanzania: new evidence using husbands' and wives' survey data.

This paper explores the hypothesis that gender attitude scales (which measure the degree of equity in gender attitudes) are associated with contraceptive use. Four hundred male and female respondents (200 couples) were interviewed using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire. Analyses included comparisons of means and prevalence rates on gender equity indicators, other related factors and socio-demographic characteristics; t-tests to compare mean scores on each gender scale for wives and husbands to identify any significant differences; chi-squared tests to compare associations between individ…

Mapping Multilevel Barriers and Facilitators to Inclusive Cancer Care for Sexual and Gender Minority Populations: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide, yet advances in prevention, screening, and treatment are not equitably shared. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, and additional sexual and gender minority (LGBTQIA+) individuals face persistent disparities in cancer care across individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels. This scoping review aimed to improve cancer care for adult LGBTQIA+ patients by mapping and synthesizing evidence on multilevel barriers and facilitators to inclusive cancer care. METHODS: A systematic search acros

Gender inequalities in heat-related mortality in the Czech Republic.

It is acknowledged that climate change exacerbates social inequalities, and women have been reported as more vulnerable to heat than men in many studies in Europe, including the Czech Republic. This study aimed at investigating the associations between daily temperature and mortality in the Czech Republic in the light of a sex and gender perspective, taking into account other factors such as age and marital status. Daily mean temperature and individual mortality data recorded during the five warmest months of the year (from May to September) over the period 1995-2019 were used to fit a quasi-P

Evaluating equity reporting within systematic reviews of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medicine that can reduce HIV transmission. Given the disproportionate impact of HIV on minority communities, health equity is an important consideration in PrEP research. We aimed to assess equity reporting in systematic reviews of PrEP using the PROGRESS Plus framework. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase and Cochrane databases for systematic reviews or meta analyses of PrEP usage. We then used the PROGRESS Plus framework to extract inclusion of the following domains: place of residence, race/ethnicity/culture

Gender-inclusive, culturally sensitive validation of the parental self-efficacy to respond to school refusal.

This letter responds to the recent article by Cardamone-Breen et al. (2025), which introduced the Parental Self-Efficacy to Respond to School Refusal Scale (PSES-SR). Their study provided the first rigorously validated task-related measure of parental self-efficacy in addressing adolescent school refusal and established an important psychometric benchmark through confirmatory factor analysis, concurrent and convergent validity, and strong internal consistency. While commendable, several limitations require attention to strengthen its global relevance. These include the predominance of highly e

Sexual and Reproductive Justice and Health Equity for LGBTQ+ Women.

LGBTQ+ women have long been overlooked in sexual and reproductive health research. However, recent research has established that LGBTQ+ women have unique and specific needs that need to be addressed in order to improve effectiveness of sexual health education and practice with this historically and presently underserved population. Informed by a reproductive justice framework coupled with liberation psychology theory, this review discusses the current state of sexual and reproductive health and technologies among LGBTQ+ women. In particular, we focus on a range of HIV prevention and reproducti

Gender perspective in clinical research on osteoporosis and fractures: an urgent methodological need.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and fragility fractures in individuals over 50 years of age are a public health concern. Although their prevalence is higher in postmenopausal women, other gender identities also face risks that have historically been over-looked in research and clinical care. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the integration of a gender perspective in clinical studies on osteoporosis and fractures, identifying methodological gaps and structural biases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, and TripDatabase (2000-2025), including 22 relevant stu

Gender mainstreaming in health: looking back, looking forward.

This paper reviews published literature on experiences in mainstreaming gender within the health sector since the 1990s. Although much has been written about the need for mainstreaming gender, and on how to go about it, the gap between intention and practice is palpable. National health policies and programmes that have gender integrally woven into their objectives and activities are rare. Health research to generate gender and sex-specific data, and integrating gender in health provider training, have received scarce attention. Mainstreaming gender within institutions has remained superficial

Supporting Inclusion, Diversity, Access, and Equity in the Infectious Disease Workforce.

In medicine, a wide array of evidence demonstrates the presence of gender, racial, ethnic, and other disparities in representation, compensation, and career development. These disparities also exist in the field of infectious diseases, providing important opportunities for the Infectious Diseases Society of America to identify and report its successes in and challenges to achieving equity. In this article, we review the literature documenting challenges with equity broadly in medicine and specifically in infectious diseases. We then introduce the Be Ethical Campaign, an initiative that encoura

Equitable Deep Learning for Diabetic Retinopathy Detection Using Multidimensional Retinal Imaging With Fair Adaptive Scaling.

PURPOSE: To investigate the fairness of existing deep models for diabetic retinopathy (DR) detection and introduce an equitable model to reduce group performance disparities. METHODS: We evaluated the performance and fairness of various deep learning models for DR detection using fundus images and optical coherence tomography (OCT) B-scans. A Fair Adaptive Scaling (FAS) module was developed to reduce group disparities. Model performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and equity across various groups was assessed by equity-scaled AUC, whic

20 years of gender mainstreaming in health: lessons and reflections for the neglected tropical diseases community.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect the poorest of the poor. NTD programmes can and should rise to the challenge of playing a part in promoting more gender equitable societies. Gender equity shapes poverty and the experience of disease in multiple ways; yet to date, there has been little attention paid to gender equity in NTD control efforts. Drawing on a synthesis of relevant literature, the tacit knowledge and experience of the authors, and discussions at a meeting on women, girls and NTDs, this analysis paper distills five key lessons from over 20 years of gender mainstreaming in heal…

Examining gender as an issue of policy priority: a case study of four Kenyan health policy implementation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Despite global and national commitments to gender equity, including Sustainable Development Goal 5, health policy processes often fail to adequately integrate gender considerations. This study explores how gender is prioritized in the development and implementation of four Kenyan Health Policy Implementation Strategies (HPIS), offering insight into the role of institutional actors, policy framing, and contextual factors. METHODS: A qualitative case study was conducted involving content analysis of four HPIS documents - KASF II 2020, NSP-NCD 2021, NSP-TB 2019, and COVID-TTS 2019 - …
