Supporting Female Survivors of Gender-Based Violence Experiencing Homelessness: Outcomes of a Health Promotion Psychoeducation Group Intervention.

Homelessness is an important risk factor for gender-based violence (GBV), particularly among youth, and disproportionally affects women and girls. Survivors of GBV experience enduring and severe physical, psychological, and sexual health problems. Although key elements in service delivery for survivors of GBV have been identified, little is known about outcomes of community-based programs aiming to assist homeless and unstably housed youth experiencing GBV. This longitudinal study aimed to quantitatively evaluate changes in mental health and well-being outcomes in female identified youth exper…

Psychosocial correlates of gender-based violence among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women in three US cities.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is common among women with and at risk for HIV, yet little is known about the GBV associated psychological factors that could be modifiable through behavioral interventions. The current study examined the associations between some of these psychological factors (i.e., hopelessness, consideration of future consequences, self esteem), mental health symptoms, substance abuse, and GBV among a sample of 736 HIV-infected and sociodemographically similar uninfected participants in the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS). Results indicated high rates of lifetime GBV among …

Gender-based violence in dating relationships: educational gaps and perceptions among undergraduate nursing students in Southern Spain.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) in dating relationships is an escalating public health concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults. University settings, and specifically nursing programmes, are key environments for early detection and prevention. As future frontline health professionals, nursing students must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify and respond effectively to intimate partner violence. METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study involved a purposive sample of 24 undergraduate nursing students aged 18 to 24 years; all enrolled in universities …

Correlation between gender-based violence and poor treatment outcomes among transgender women living with HIV in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women are disproportionately affected by both HIV and gender-based violence (GBV), defined as physical, sexual, or emotional violence perpetrated against an individual based on their gender identity/expression. While a growing body of evidence demonstrates that GBV leads to poor HIV care and treatment outcomes among cisgender women, less research has examined this association among transgender women. We assessed the impact of lifetime experiences of GBV on subsequent retention in HIV care and laboratory confirmed viral suppression among a sample of transgender women liv…

The Use of the Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Interview to Understand and Support Help Seeking After Gender-Based Violence.

Gender-based violence (GBV), characterized by the abduction or rape of women and girls to humiliate, intimidate, and traumatize them and their communities, is a profoundly disturbing tactic in international conflict. Long after armed conflict has ended, survivors continue to experience physical injuries, psychological trauma, and social and cultural stigma. Guilt, shame, and continued interpersonal violence can become a normalized part of daily life, significantly challenging the road to healing and recovery. Research about self-disclosure and narrative after GBV has shown that help seeking ra…

Psychometric Evaluation of the Motivators and Resources for Trauma Recovery (I- MOVE) Scale Among Gender-Based Violence Survivors.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive public health issue with profound psychological, relational, and structural consequences. While survivors draw upon internal resources, external resources, internal motivators, and external motivators throughout the healing process, existing instruments typically assess these constructs independently rather than within a unified, survivor-centered framework. The Motivators and Resources for Trauma Recovery (I-MOVE) Scale was developed to address this gap through a strengths-based assessment of recovery facilitators among women survivors of GBV. The fo…

Gender-based violence and its associated factors among internally displaced women in Northwest Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is a common human right violence in conflict-affected communities. Women with GBV are prone to experience mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. However, there is a paucity of evidence as to what extent the problem is affecting internally displaced women (IDW) in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of GBV and its associated factors among IDW in Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among IDW residing at three humanitarian sites from May to June 2022 in Northwes…

"Don't Turn a Blind Eye": An Instruction for Supporting Meaningful Conversations About Gender-Based Violence During Perinatal Care.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that Gender-based violence (GBV) is prevalent throughout the perinatal period. Women during this time have frequent contact with healthcare providers (HCPs), and there are many opportunities that HCPs can identify GBV and support women by early intervention during routine prenatal care. However, evidence shows that HCPs are still hesitant to address this issue. This study was conducted to explore the experiences of Survivors and HCPs on how to manage a meaningful conversation about GBV with survivors during perinatal care. METHODS: A thematic approach…

Prevalence and Social-Structural Correlates of Gender-Based Violence Against Women Living With HIV in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

Violence experienced by cisgender (cis) and gender minority women living with HIV is known to be high. More work is needed to better understand how to support women living with HIV who have experienced violence. The objectives of this study are therefore to identify the prevalence and correlates of violence by any perpetrator among women living with HIV in a Canadian setting. Data were drawn from 9 years (January, 2010 to February, 2019) of a longitudinal community-based open cohort study of 350+ cis and trans women living with HIV who were living and/or accessed care in Metro Vancouver, Canad

Gender based violence as a risk factor for HIV-associated risk behaviors among female sex workers in Armenia.

This cross-sectional study identified the prevalence of gender based violence (GBV) and examined its association with sexual risk behavior among female sex workers (FSWs). Among 120 participants between ages 20 and 52, a total of 56.7 % reported lifetime GBV. Multivariate analyses revealed that GBV was significantly associated with inconsistent condom use, unprotected sex, condom misuse, fear of client reaction to requests of condom use, self-reported history of STIs, and earlier age of initiation of sex work. GBV must be considered an urgent public health priority among FSWs in Armenia. Inter

Histories of pervasive gender-based violence in asylum-seeking women who have undergone female genital mutilation or cutting.

Few studies have described the broader experience of survivors of female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) who have sought asylum in the United States. To gain a better understanding of their exposure to gender-based violence (GBV), the study was conducted to help uncover themes and patterns of co-occurring individual and community factors among women asylum seekers who experienced FGM/C before they arrived in the United States. Following a retrospective chart review of FGM/C cases seen in a human rights clinic, 35 women met the inclusion criteria. The constant comparative method (CCM) was…
