Permanent blindness as a complication of pregnancy induced hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Visual disturbances are common symptoms of preeclampsia, but blindness remains a rare phenomenon. CASE: A 21-year-old secundagravida was admitted at 3547 weeks' gestation with a diagnosis of preeclampsia. She labored on her second hospital day and underwent a cesarean delivery for nonreassuring fetal status. On postoperative day 1, she reported blurring of her vision that progressed rapidly to complete vision loss. Ophthalmological examination revealed ischemic retinal changes bilaterally; radiographic examination showed lesions in the lateral geniculate bodies, consistent with in

Sectorial optic atrophy and homonymous, horizontal sectoranopia: a lateral choroidal artery syndrome?

Two patients with sectorial optic atrophy and homonymous, horizontal sectoranopia are described. Neuroradiological investigations localised the visual pathway lesion to the lateral geniculate body. The peculiar nature of the field defect and the optic atrophy appeared explicable in terms of ischaemia in the territory of the lateral choroidal artery.

White Matter Abnormalities of Auditory Neural Pathway in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss Using Diffusion Spectrum Imaging: Different Findings From Tinnitus.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a complex and challenging emergency which requires evidence regarding its pathophysiological changes to guide the treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the white matter integrity of the auditory neural pathway in patients with unilateral SSNHL in acute stage by using diffusion spectrum imaging tractography. In the present study, 60 individuals with acute SSNHL (29 males, 50.7 ± 11.8 years) and 25 healthy controls (13 males, 45.2 ± 13.2 years) underwent diffusion spectrum imaging tractography and high resolution T1 structural examinations

Glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons in the vLGN mediate the nociceptive effects of green and red light on neuropathic pain.

Phototherapy is an emerging non-pharmacological treatment for depression, circadian rhythm disruptions, and neurodegeneration, as well as pain conditions including migraine and fibromyalgia. However, the mechanism of phototherapy-induced antinociception is not well understood. Here, using fiber photometry recordings of population-level neural activity combined with chemogenetics, we found that phototherapy elicits antinociception via regulation of the ventral lateral geniculate body (vLGN) located in the visual system. Specifically, both green and red lights caused an increase of c-fos in vLGN

Reorganization of thalamocortical connections in congenitally blind humans.

Cross-modal plasticity in blind individuals has been reported over the past decades showing that nonvisual information is carried and processed by "visual" brain structures. However, despite multiple efforts, the structural underpinnings of cross-modal plasticity in congenitally blind individuals remain unclear. We mapped thalamocortical connectivity and assessed the integrity of white matter of 10 congenitally blind individuals and 10 sighted controls. We hypothesized an aberrant thalamocortical pattern of connectivity taking place in the absence of visual stimuli from birth as a potential me

The postnatal development of retinal projections in strepsirrhine galagos (Otolemur garnettii).

Here, we describe the postnatal development of retinal projections in galagos. Galagos are of special interest as they represent the understudied strepsirrhine branch (galagos, pottos, lorises, and lemurs) of the primate radiations. The projections of both eyes were revealed in each galago by injecting red or green cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) tracers into different eyes of galagos ranging from postnatal day 5 to adult. In the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers were clearly labeled and identified by having inputs from the ipsilateral

A visual-degradation-inspired model with HSV color-encoding for contour detection.

BACKGROUND: Given energy metabolism, visual information degradation plays an essential role in the retina- lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN)-primary visual cortex (V1)-secondary visual cortex (V2) pathway, and is a pivotal issue for visual information processing. Degradation helps the visual nervous system conserve brain energy and efficiently perceive the real world even though a small fraction of visual information reaches the early visual areas. The coding of contour features (edge and corner) is achieved in the retina-LGN-V1-V2 pathway. Based on the above, we proposed a contour detection mo

Cell type- and layer-specific convergence in core and shell neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus.

Over 40 distinct types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) generate parallel processing pathways in the visual system. In mice, two subdivisions of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), the core and the shell, organize distinct parallel channels to transmit visual information from the retina to the primary visual cortex (V1). To investigate how the dLGN core and shell differentially integrate visual information and other modalities, we mapped synaptic input sources to each dLGN subdivision at the cell-type level with G-deleted rabies viral vectors. The monosynaptic circuit tracing reveale

[Characteristics of the human lateral geniculate nucleus vascular network].

The blood supply of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) was studied on ten human brains obtained at autopsy from patients of both sexes with no indication of either psychiatric and neurological disorders or trauma of CNS. The age range was form 30 to 50 years. The brain blood vessels-the basilar artery and the internal carotid artery were injected with a mixture of gelatin and Indian ink. Microdissection revealed that the arterial branches for the LGN arise from anterior choroidal artery and posterior cerebral artery through one of its central branches-lateral posterior choroidal artery. The development of the retinogeniculate pathways in normal and albino ferrets.

The retinogeniculate pathways of normal and albino ferrets have been studied with horseradish peroxidase and tritiated proline used as axonal markers. The uncrossed retinogeniculate projection of adult albino ferrets is abnormally small and occupies only a fraction of the geniculate area normally occupied by uncrossed afferents. The crossed pathway is correspondingly expanded, occupying almost the entire nucleus. The geniculate laminae in the albino ferret are abnormal, showing abnormal fusions between layers receiving crossed input and abnormal discontinuities next to the small cell islands r

The morphology of the diencephalon in the Prosimii. II. The Lemuroidea and Lorisoidea. Part I. Thalamus and metathalamus.

This study (Part I) covers the comparative structure of the thalamus and metathalamus in the prosimian superfamilies, Lorisoidea and Lemuroidea. Several lemuroid specimens, namely Lemus, Cheirogaleus, Microcebus, Avahi and Daubentonia, and lorisoid specimens such as Galago, Perodicticus and Loris have been used in this extensive study. The anterior nuclear group does not show much difference among these species, although attention is focussed on the differentiation of the principal anterior nucleus into anteromedial and anteroventral parts; the latter increases in structural complexity. The an

Histology of the monkey lateral geniculate nucleus after unilateral lid closure and experimental strabismus: further observations.

The histology of binocularly and monocularly innervated portions of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) was studied after unilateral lid closure and experimental esotropia and exotropia in the Macaca mulatta and the results were compared with behavioral and neurophysiological data. The most severe cell shrinkage occurred in two animals who had one eye sutured during the first week of life; all dorsal and ventral deprived LGN layers, including the monocular segment, were involved. Less severe anomalies and sparing of the monocular segment were encountered in esotropic amblyopic monkeys and the

Influence of cholinergic drugs on the lateral geniculate phasic waves.

The lateral geniculate phasic wave (GL wave, GLW) was studied at awaking, during the REM period of sleep (REMP) and after administration of reserpine (RSP) and parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA). The GLWs were classified by the time relation to the eye movements (EMs) into three groups of the GL-preceding GLW (GLWs precede EMs or concur with EMs), the EM-preceding GLW (EMs precede GLWs) and the EM-discording GLW (GLWs not associated with EMs). Changes in occurrence of thus classified GLWs and in the EM-GLW time (time delay between EM and GLW) were examined with supplementary administration of eser

Circadian rhythm of histamine metabolism in the rabbit central nervous system (CNS): analysis of brain and ocular structures.

The circadian rhythm of the level of histamine (HI) and histidine decarboxylase (HD) and histamine-methyltransferase (HMT) activity in 6 brain and 5 ocular structures of the rabbit was studied. Clear circadian variations of the histaminergic parameters in two brain (hypothalamus and lateral geniculate body) and two ocular (retina and iris-ciliary body) tissues were found. It is suggested that HI in some brain and ocular structures may be functionally involved in activity that depends on circadian rhythm.
