A research on lesions apparently tumorous that appear on jawbones and are not exactly tumors is developed. These lesions are clinically sile … diagnosis judgment made by image can or cannot be significant. We have to highlight the presence of giant cells with an osteoclastic nature in most of these pseudo tumorous lesions.

Although giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a well-known vasculitis sensitive to corticosteroid-mediated immunosuppression, numerous issues of long-term therapeutic management remain unresolved. Because GCA encompasses a broad spectrum of clinical subtypes, ranging from devastating visual loss and neurological deficits to isolated systemic symptoms, the treatment of GCA must be adjusted to each case, and recommendations vary widely in the literature. This article systematically reviews the treatment options for patients with neuro-ophthalmic and neurological complications of GCA, as well as the evi

The case report is of a 30 year old male, who complained of a slowly expanding swelling in the maxilla in the left premolar region. The swelling was clinically and radiographically diagnosed as Central Giant Cell Granuloma. The patient also had Angles Class 2 Division 2 Malocclusion in which repeated micro trauma may have possibly contributed to the formation of the tumor. The tumor was surgically removed under general anesthesia followed by local injections of corticosteroids.

A 72-year-old white man presented with a large cutaneous tumor on his back. The patient said the lesion, mostly asymptomatic, had increased in size for about 7 years. Physical examination revealed a vegetating mass (Figure 1), partially ulcerated, measuring 30 x 20 cm, which easily dripped serum and blood, with small necrotic areas and a sclerotic border. Perilesional skin appeared edematous, probably owing to inflammation and impaired lymphatic flow. Clinically, there was no evidence of lymph node involvement. His family history was noncontributory. Hematologic examination revealed hypochromi

Giant cell arteritis is a vasculitis of large and medium size arteries, especially those of the aortic arch with an extracranial distribution, but also the aorta and some of its larger branches. It is characterised by the presence of mononuclear inflammatory infiltrates close to the internal elastic lamina formed by lymphocytes and macrophages, which in slightly more than 50% of the cases contain multinucleate giant cells. The morbidity associated with this disease is related to phenomena of distal ischemia to the luminal stenosis of the inflamed arteries, and to a lesser extent to the formati…

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features of giant-cell granulomatous hypophysitis and to report on the results of corticosteroid treatment.
METHODS: A case of giant-cell granulomatous hypophysitis is presented, and the pertinent literature is reviewed.
RESULTS: A 41-year-old woman with anterior pituitary dysfunction had a pituitary mass that was 18 by 16 by 13 mm by magnetic resonance imaging. The pituitary stalk was thickened and enhanced after intravenous administration of gadolinium. A biopsy specimen that was obtained at transsphenoidal pituitary exploration revealed that the patient

Giant cell hepatitis is a frequent reaction of the liver to different injuries in newborns and in childhood, but rare in adults. This form of hepatitis is often accompanied by cholestasis and shows fast progression to cirrhosis. In most cases autoimmune, metabolic, toxic or viral origin can be found, but sometimes the etiology remains hidden. This paper introduces two adult giant cell hepatitis cases. Hepatitis C virus infection was the possible origin in the first case and autoimmune disease in the other one.

A 76-yr-old woman with widespread giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica is described. The patient had an unusual simultaneous involvement of the cranial (temporal) arteries demonstrated by biopsy, and of large elastic arteries (aorta and its major branches), medium-sized and small muscular arteries, arterioles and vasa vasorum found at autopsy. Coronary arteritis was responsible for the fatal myocardial infarction.

In a 50-year-old man without bronchopulmonary symptoms a round mass lesion close to the hilum of the right lung was detected in a routine chest x-ray and confirmed by computed tomography. Histological examination of two biopsy specimens did not result in a definitive diagnosis. Therefore thoracotomy with enucleation of the focus was performed. The histological picture of the lesion is characterized by connective tissue proliferation, multinucleated giant cells, ossification, localised hemorrhage, deposits of hemosiderin and foci of foam cells. The findings are interpreted as a giant cell granu…

BACKGROUND: Most giant cell tumors (GCT) occur at the ends of long bones. There is little information about GCT of the skull bones.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the Mayo Clinic files, which contained 546 cases of GCT, and their own consultation files, which contained approximately 1500 cases.
RESULTS: Eleven tumors occurred in the sphenoid bone with extension to the surrounding bones and structures in 8 patients. One tumor (in Paget's disease) occurred in the frontal bone, one tumor was in the occipital bone, and one tumor was in the temporal bone. There were 4 men and 11 women whose ages r

Subependymal giant-cell astrocytomas (SEGA) are rare brain tumors. They occur typically in the walls of the lateral ventricles and very seldom in the wall of the third ventricle. In our experience, all patients with SEGA have had tuberous sclerosis. Between January 1950 and May 1990, of our 345 patients with tuberous sclerosis 22 were found to have SEGA. The diagnosis being made histologically in symptomatic cases or by clinical or neuroradiologic methods. The histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of this unique tumor are discussed. To date, histopathologic methods hav

Giant cell arteritis is a generalized vasculitis mainly affecting elderly people. The incidence is increasing, but only for women. The etiology is still unknown, but evidence suggests a cellular immunologic reaction against a local antigen present in the arterial wall. The disease can present itself with a great variety of symptoms. Constitutional symptoms such as fever, weight loss, and anorexia seem to be more common than hitherto believed. Onset of large artery involvement is independent of the evolution of the classic clinical symptoms. Peripheral synovitis is rarely seen in patients with

We describe an atypical case of subacute thyroiditis affecting a 50 year old patient with long lasting fever, weight loss, malaise and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Cytological examination of the thyroid gland showed the classic granulomas with giant cells. However, the patient had neither painful enlargement of the gland nor thyrotoxicosis. This case, as well as others previously described, probably represents a new subtype of subacute thyroiditis, painless giant cell thyroiditis. The presence of painless giant cell thyroiditis should be considered in any patient with undiagnosed pyr…

A 71-year-old asymptomatic man was investigated because of anemia and an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Temporal artery biopsy showed that he had active giant cell arteritis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of giant cell arteritis in an asymptomatic patient. Giant cell arteritis may remain undiagnosed during life in many cases and may be an important cause of unexplained anemia in the elderly.

In a study to assess the natural history of giant-cell arteritis, 90 patients with proved disease were followed up from the time of diagnosis. Early mortality was low and most commonly due to vertebral arteritis, but cerebral infarction did not appear to be a late complication. High maintenance dose steroids and visual loss were associated significantly with a shortened life span (p=0.0003 and p=0.0024). One-third of the patients developed chronic relapsing disease, but serious late complications were not encountered. After the initial attack has been controlled steroid dosage should be reduce
