New multisystemic disorder involving heart valves, skin, bones, and joints in two brothers.

We report on 2 brothers with a severe progressive disorder characterized by thick skin, acne conglobata, "coarse" face, osteolysis, gingival hypertrophy, brachydactyly, camptodactyly, and mitral valve prolapse. The youngest brother died at age 24 years because of heart failure. Biochemical and pathological studies excluded known metabolic diseases. We think that this is a new genetic disorder inherited in autosomal recessive or X-linked recessive manner.

[Iatrogenic stomatitis].

The oral cavity is the site of diverse manifestations of iatrogenic disease. Mucosal pigmentations, gingival hypertrophy, ulcerations, mucositis and xerostomia are easily identifiable, but may simulate diseases that are well known to localise to the oral cavity, such as aphthous ulcers or lichen planus. Drug therapies are at the origin of the greatest number of these lesions. A rigorous inquiry into the characteristic oral lesions permits, in the majority of cases, the establishment of this relationship.

A case of bullous pemphigoid arising in juvenile hyaline fibromatosis with oral squamous cell carcinoma.

We experienced a case of bullous pemphigoid (BP) arising in juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) associated with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). JHF is a very rare disease inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Skin-colored, elastic hard nodules up to 10 cm in size were scattered mainly on the trunk and scalp. Gingival hypertrophy and an ill-defined mass with an irregular surface on the hard palate were noticed. A skin biopsy and a gingival biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of JFH and oral SCC, respectively. The patient was receiving anti-cancer drugs for the treatment of oral SCC and th

Primary tuberculosis masquerading as gingival enlargement.

Background Tuberculosis is a chronic granulomatous disease and an enormous health problem. Oral lesions are relatively uncommon, however, pulmonary tuberculosis may manifest with the involvement of the gingiva as the only primary finding.Case description The present case study reports tuberculosis of the gingiva manifesting as gingival enlargement. The diagnosis was based on sputum examination, histopathology and immunologic investigations. Anti-tubercular therapy was carried out with remarkable changes in gingival health within four months.Clinical implications and conclusion Gingival tubercu

Photodynamic therapy for the successful management of cyclosporine-related gum hypertrophy: A novel therapeutic option.

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced gingival overgrowth is associated with the intake of three classes of drugs: anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and calcium channel blockers. It is clinically characterized by hyperplasia of the gingival connective tissue which appears edematous, bloody, and purplish-red in color. In more severe cases, drug-induced gingival hyperplasia negatively affects the patient's quality of life, making it difficult to eat and practice good oral hygiene. Drug-induced gingival overgrowth therapy is controversial and, in fact, no studies in the literature highlight a well-defined

Dwarfism, rhizomelic limb shortness, and abnormal face: new short stature syndrome sharing some manifestations with Robinow syndrome.

We describe a child with short stature of prenatal onset, rhizomelic limb shortness affecting the upper limbs particularly, and an unusual face. She had frontal balding, mid-face hypoplasia, a small nose, macrostomia with down-turned corners of the mouth, gingival hypertrophy, and hypoplasia or absence of the clitoris. There was no gross modelling defect of the skeleton and the vertebral column was normal. Some of these manifestations overlap with those of Robinow syndrome.

Oral presentation of Wegener granulomatosis.

Although the mouth is often involved in Wegener granulomatosis, oral lesions as the initial sign are rare. This case report documents the importance of considering Wegener granulomatosis in patients with unique oral lesions. The most common lesion is a friable-granular-hyperplastic gingivitis associated with alveolar resorption and tooth mobility. The disease may remain localized to the mouth for several weeks or months before multiorgan involvement occurs. Gingival enlargement is a direct manifestation of Wegener granulomatosis, and it may be pathognomonic. Failure to recognize the clinical l

Familial Biphasic Cutaneous Amyloidosis.

A Bengali family had familial biphasic cutaneous amyloidosis in 6 of the 11 members in 3 generations. The propositti developed intense itching, thickening and pigmentation of the skin associated with discrete, brownish black papules bilaterally on the legs, ankles, popliteal fossae and extensor aspects of the thighs. Face, neck, scalp and oral mucosa were spared. There was hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles. None of them had lymphadenopathy, macroglossia, hepatosplenomegaly, neuropathy or gingival hypertrophy.

A rare case of Proteus syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: We report a rare case of Proteus syndrome which presented with dysphagia due to unilateral tonsillar hypertrophy. CASE REPORT: Our case had involvement of multiple organs in addition to bony deformities, namely, enlarged right parotid gland and right testis, verrucous naevus, varicose veins and abdominal lipoma. The features unique to this case were a larger right optic disc and expansion of the inner table of the skull. DISCUSSION: A literature review revealed less than 100 bona fide, published cases which fit the revised diagnostic criteria proposed by Turner. SUMMARY: The E

Biallelic frameshift variant in the TBC1D2B gene in two siblings with progressive gingival overgrowth, fibrous dysplasia of face, and mental deterioration.

Biallelic loss-of-function variants in the TBC1D2B gene were recently reported as a cause of a neurodevelopmental disorder with seizures and gingival overgrowth. Here, we report two male siblings with the similar clinical characteristics. They started with gingival overgrowth and bilateral growth of soft tissues in the malar region at 3 years of age, which evolved with significant maxillary hypertrophy and compression of the brainstem due to fibrous dysplasia of facial bones. After disease evolution, they presented with mental deterioration, limb tremors, and gait ataxia. One of them also pres

[Is it possible for periodontal patients to recognize periodontal disease].

The purpose of this study was the evaluation of clinical symptoms of periodontal disease in a sample of adult periodontal patients, that were presented for periodontal treatment in the private clinics of the authors during a period of ten years. A questionnaire was designed for this reason which included questions related to gingival bleeding, gingival enlargement, tooth migration and tooth mobility. 330 questionnaires were evaluated from a total of 1175 consisting a representative sample. The results have showed that the clinical symptoms that directed patients to look for periodontal treatme

Gingival zenith positions and levels of the maxillary anterior dentition.

PURPOSE: The location of the gingival zenith in a medial-lateral position relative to the vertical tooth axis of the maxillary anterior teeth remains to be clearly defined. In addition, the apex of the free gingival margin of the lateral incisor teeth relative to the gingival zeniths of the adjacent proximal teeth remains undetermined. Therefore, this investigation evaluated two clinical parameters: (1) the gingival zenith position (GZP) from the vertical bisected midline (VBM) along the long axis of each individual maxillary anterior tooth; and (2) the gingival zenith level (GZL) of the later

Hyaline fibromatosis syndrome with mutation c.1074delT of the CMG2 gene: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis and infantile systemic hyalinosis are variants of the same autosomal recessive syndrome; hyaline fibromatosis syndrome, characterized by papulonodular skin lesions, gingival hypertrophy, flexion contractures of joints, osteolytic bone lesions and stunted growth. Infantile systemic hyalinosis is distinguished from juvenile hyaline fibromatosis by its more severe phenotype, which includes hyaline deposits in multiple organs, recurrent infections and death within the first two years of life.Hyaline fibromatosis syndrome is due to mutations of the gene-e

Cutaneous disorders in uremic patients on hemodialysis: an Egyptian case-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: We studied the prevalence of mucocutaneous disorders in uremic adults and children on hemodialysis (HD) vs. controls, in Egypt. METHODS: A total of 206 Egyptians with uremia (163 adults and 43 children) undergoing HD, and 199 healthy controls (161 adults and 38 children), were examined for mucocutaneous abnormalities. RESULTS: Specific cutaneous diseases associated with renal insufficiency were found in five adults, including acquired perforating dermatosis and pseudo-porphyria. Non-specific abnormalities included xerosis (54%), pallor (42.2%), nail changes (34.9%), hair changes

Cutaneous manifestations of chronic renal failure in children of color.

One hundred percent of adult patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) develop cutaneous findings as a result of uremia or due to therapeutic interventions. To date, pediatric incidence studies have been limited to Caucasian children. However, recent reports have indicated that more African American patients progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This is the first study to assess the prevalence of renal failure-related skin disease in children of color, including African American and Hispanic patients. Thirty children were evaluated by history and physical examination, with assignment to

Overlapping Hyaline Fibromatosis Syndrome: A Rare Case of Juvenile Hyaline Fibromatosis and Infantile Systemic Hyalinosis.

Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) and infantile systemic hyalinosis (ISF) are rare progressive, fatal autosomal recessive fibromatosis disorders that are characterized by the deposition of hyaline in various tissues. Mutations in capillary morphogenesis gene 2 are responsible for both of these conditions. These disorders usually present with fleshy, papular lesions, joint contractures, gingival hyperplasia, and persistent diarrhoea. An 18-month-old boy presented with multiple scalp abscesses, facial nodules, gingival hypertrophy, hypertrophic verrucous plaques and joint contractures with uni
