American journal of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics : official publication of the American Association of Orthodontists, its constituent societies, and the American Board of Orthodontics2017eng
INTRODUCTION: This study was designed to evaluate the long-term prevalence of gingival recession after orthodontic tooth movements, focusing on the effects of mandibular incisor proclination and expansion of maxillary posterior teeth.
METHODS: Records of 205 patients (162 female, 43 male) were obtained from 2 private practice orthodontists. Using pretreatment (age, 14.0 ± 5.9 years) and posttreatment (age, 16.5 ± 6.0 years) lateral cephalograms and dental models, mandibular incisor proclination and maxillary arch widths were measured. Gingival recession was measured based on posttreatment and…

Gingival recession (GR) is a common clinical situation observed in patient populations regardless of their age and ethnicity. It has been estimated that over 60% of the human population has gingival recession. It is the final effect of the interaction of multiple etiological factors. Identification and definition of the range of influence is often not possible, with the result that new methods for testing and elimination of potential etiological factors are still being sought. The aim of this study is to present the etiopathogenesis of gingival recessions with regard to the analysis of morphol…

DATA SOURCES: Medline, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and reference lists of articles meeting the inclusion criteria.
STUDY SELECTION: To be included, the studies had to be clinical trials with multiple cases, looking at orthodontic treatment involving labial movement of lower incisors and gingival recession in these teeth.
DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Two authors reviewed all abstracts independently, compared results and reached consensus on inclusion/exclusion through discussion. Quality assessment of the studies was carried out using one of the a…

To perform a systematic review on the effect of changes in incisor inclination owing to orthodontic treatment and the occurrence of gingival recession. PubMed, EMBASE Excerpta Medica and CENTRAL of the Cochrane Library were searched and a hand search was performed. From 1925 articles identified, 17 articles were finally included: six experimental animal studies and 11 retrospective clinical studies in humans. More proclined teeth compared with less proclined teeth or untreated teeth had in most studies a higher occurrence or severity of gingival recession. Contradictory results were found rega…

The gingival recession was assessed in 380 adult individuals aged more than 20 years and comprised both subjects being treated and looking for treatment at Bauru Dental School. Clinical evaluation was conducted by a single examiner in all teeth and involved analysis of four dental aspects (mesial, buccal, distal and lingual). The gingival recession was regarded as present whenever more than 1mm of root surface was exposed, and its vertical width was measured in millimeters from the cementoenamel junction to the gingival margin. The recessions were further scored following the criteria suggeste…

Elective oral piercing as a form of ornamentation or self-expression appears to be gaining popularity in New Zealand and around the world. Several reports of the dangers associated with this practice appear in the dental and medical literature. This report presents a case of rapid, severe gingival recession in a previously periodontally-healthy young female, arising from trauma due to her lip piercing. The aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of her condition are outlined, as well as criteria for the dental community to consider when evaluating patients with facial piercing. The report highlight…

Herpes simplex virus-type I (HSV-1) is responsible for both primary and recurrent infections of the oral mucosa. The aim of this case report is to show how HSV-1 may cause periodontal damage such as gingival recession. A 26-year-old male patient presented in a private office for the treatment of gingival recessions. He reported that the recessions had appeared suddenly with marginal inflammation of the gingiva and vesicle formation; within a few hours, the gingival tissue had been completely destroyed. The lesions were accompanied by pain, fever, and regional lymphadenopathy. Two weeks later, …

Wearing so-called jewelry in uncommon sites, termed as body piercing, is gaining increased popularity. There also seems to be a significant increase in oral piercing mainly in the lip and/or tongue. We report a case of multiple oral piercing sites and localized gingival recession as an adverse consequence. Furthermore, based on the medical characteristics of the case, we also emphasize the necessity and importance of professional dental/medical consultation before oral piercing.

Isolated gingival recession may occur in as many as 30 per cent of adolescents, and lead to problems of dentine hypersensitivity, root caries, and gingival inflammation in adult life. This review discusses the prevalence and aetiology of isolated recession, with particular reference to the implications for orthodontic treatment. Consideration is also given to the differing philosophies for management.

This study assesses the role of poor oral hygiene and forceful toothbrushing as risk factors for recession. As part of a cross-sectional root surface caries study, 298 subjects, 42 to 67 years of age, with at least one exposed root surface, were examined. Since 66% of the root surface exposure and practically all the abrasion was on buccal surfaces, the analyses focused only on the buccal surface. Analysis of variance on subject means for buccal recession showed both calculus and presence of buccal root surfaces with abrasion to be significantly associated with recession after adjusting for ag

BACKGROUND: The interaction between the recipient area and the graft is one of the key factors in the success of periodontal plastic surgery. This randomized controlled, split-mouth, double-blinded clinical trial aimed to compare the clinical and aesthetic outcomes of epithelialized palatal graft (EPG) and gingival unit graft (GUG) in achieving root coverage in localized (Recession Type 1) RT1 recession defects.
METHODS: Twenty participants with forty bilateral recession defects randomly received EPG or GUG surgical treatment modalities for each of the recession defects. Clinical measurements

OBJECTIVE: Gingival recession is a complication that can occur after orthodontic treatment, and its cause is still very controversial in the literature. The objective of this study was to report a clinical case of orthodontic retreatment conducted with in-office aligners and root coverage using free gingival graft, connective tissue graft, and Emdogaim for a patient with severe gingival recession.
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: This report presents a potential solution to correct a gingival recession with in-office clear aligner. A mandibular left lateral incisor whose root was positioned buccally …
