Epizootic hemorrhagic disease outbreak in a captive facility housing white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), bison (Bison bison), elk (Cervus elaphus), cattle (Bos taurus), and goats (Capra hircus) in Colorado, U.S.A.

An ungulate research facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, U.S.A., experienced mortality in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) because of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) infection from 20 August 2007 through 26 September 2007. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) was detected by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and virus isolation from the spleen and lung tissues of two white-tailed deer. Virus neutralization tests were performed on pre- and postoutbreak sera from other species maintained in the same facility, including bison (Bison bison), elk (Cervus ela

Assessment of the duration of maternal-derived antibodies specific to the Mycoplasma agalactiae vaccine in goat kids.

BACKGROUND: Contagious agalactia (CA) is one of the most important diseases in the small ruminant industry in Iran. The historical aetiology of this disease is Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma). The main way to control this disease, in addition to management measures, is vaccination. In ruminant newborns, determining the age of first vaccination against Ma is a challenge due to the interference between colostrum-derived maternal immunity and vaccination-induced immunity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the consistency of maternal-derived antibodies specific to the Ma in goat kids blood serum bo

A novel duplex TaqMan qPCR assay for rapid differential diagnosis and co-infection screening of Orf virus and Brucella spp. in goats.

Orf and brucellosis are significant infectious diseases that pose serious threats to the goat farming industry. Despite their co-occurrence in goat herds, no TaqMan-based duplex qPCR assay has been reported for their simultaneous detection. In this study, we developed a duplex TaqMan real-time qPCR assay for the simultaneous detection of Orf virus (ORFV) and Brucella spp., facilitating rapid differential diagnosis and co-infection screening. Specific primers and probes targeting conserved regions of the ORFV B2L gene and Brucella spp. Bcsp31 gene were designed, and reaction conditions were opt

Review on Epidemiology and Public Health Importance of Goat Tuberculosis in Ethiopia.

Small ruminant is an important and integral part of livestock in Ethiopia. Especially, goats are attractive to people of Ethiopia because of the ability to resist challenges, easily adapt to different ecological regions, and need small land to rearing and small initial capital in which poor people can engaged in the production system. In spite of the presence of large number of goat population in Ethiopia, it fails to utilize expected productivity due to many factors. Among the factors, which limit the economic returns of goats, diseases stand frontline. Tuberculosis is one the diseases that a

Establishment of the heart cytoarchitecture: A histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural study in goats (Capra hircus).

Goat products carry economic importance worldwide yet relatively little is published about the cardiovascular structure and function in this important animal. Goat hearts have played essential roles as models for human cardiovascular diseases and in artificial heart studies. The present study investigated key structural components within the various layers of the goat ventricle, including the endocardium, myocardium, and epicardium, with particular reference to neuron-specific enolase (NSE) expression. The endothelial lining of the endocardium exhibited strong immunoreactivity to NSE, caveolae

Seroprevalence of Sheep and Goat Pox, Peste Des Petits Ruminants and Rift Valley Fever in Saudi Arabia.

Sheep and goat pox, peste des petits ruminants and Rift Valley fever are important diseases of small ruminant livestock. Sheep and goat pox, along with peste des petits ruminants, are endemic throughout most of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Whereas Rift Valley fever is endemic in Africa, outbreaks in the Middle East have been reported over the past decade, including the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia is a major importer of livestock, and understanding the prevalence of these viral infections would be useful for disease control. In this study, sera from sheep and goats were collected from

Knowledge, attitude and practice of farmers towards goat mastitis through item response theory approaches.

Goat production, which is largely managed by resource-poor farmers, is hindered by limited infrastructure, education, and low awareness of prevalent diseases, management, and cultural perceptions. Goat mastitis is often overlooked due to poor routine diagnostic culture, low farmer awareness, and management-related risk factors. The objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) levels of herders on mastitis in goats. A cross-sectional study with simple random sampling was conducted in selected districts of northeastern Amhara region, Ethiopia, from Septemb

Development of an immunoassay using recombinant outer membrane protein A and flagellin for diagnosis of goats with melioidosis.

Among domestic animals, melioidosis is one of the most common diseases reported in goat, sheep, and swine. To evaluate the specific antibodies in goats with melioidosis, we developed a serology test using recombinant outer membrane protein A (OmpA) and flagellin (FliC) of Burkholderia pseudomallei as antigens. DNA corresponding to each antigen was cloned into a pET32a vector and expressed in Escherichia coli. Essentially, the recombinant OmpA and FliC were expressed in a soluble form that could be isolated with 95% homogeneity. Both recombinants could be recognized by rabbit antibodies prepare

Enterocolitis in goats associated with enterotoxaemia in the perspective of two toxins: Epsilon toxin and beta-2 toxin - An immunohistochemical and molecular study.

Caprine intestinal diseases associated with clostridia are generally caused by Cpa and Etx encoded alpha (α) and epsilon (ε) toxinotypes of Clostridium perfringens type D respectively. A recent study on goat enterocolitis, demonstrated that the incidence of Clostridium perfringens type-D toxinotype and beta 2 toxins is high, suggesting its role in enterocolitis and many other diseases of goats affecting intestinal tract. Considering this scenario, the present prevalence study was planned to screen the goat intestinal tissues for the presence of the epsilon toxin and beta 2 toxin. Tissue sectio
