In Korea, systematic management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including syphilis and gonorrhea, began only after the end of the Korean War. Since the enactment of the Law on Prevention of Communicable Diseases of 1954, STI has been managed and regularly monitored in high risk group. However, the major turning point was the implementation of the Special Law on Prostitution, which was enacted in September 2004. The national policy on STI management had also changed from management of core groups by mandatory to voluntary examinations and treatment of patients by health examinations.…

CLINICAL QUESTION: Dermatologists diagnose and treat sexually transmitted infections with varying frequency, and have an opportunity to monitor at-risk individuals for chlamydia and gonorrhea. What are the recommended screening guidelines for chlamydia and gonorrhea in men and women in the United States?
BOTTOM LINE: While the evidence for screening men for chlamydia and gonorrhea remains insufficient at this time, all sexually active females younger than 25 years and all older women at risk for infection should be screened for both chlamydia and gonorrhea.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The proportion of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates with reduced susceptibility to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) has increased rapidly since 2006. Clinicians, researchers, and public health officials need to be prepared for the possibility of an era of untreatable gonorrhea. This review focuses on the evidence for current gonorrhea treatment recommendations, potential future treatment options, and other methods to control gonorrhea.
RECENT FINDINGS: In addition to an increase in isolates with decreased susceptibility to ESCs, there have been reported treatment failur…

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea and chancroid are common sexually transmitted infections in many parts of the world. Still, co-occurrence of these two conditions is uncommonly reported.
OBJECTIVE: We present here a patient who presented with painful genital ulcers and urethral discharge simultaneously acquired from a single exposure, which turned out to be chancroid and gonorrhea, respectively. Both conditions responded well to a single intramuscular dose of ceftriaxone 250 mg.
CONCLUSION: This report describes the uncommon occurrence of gonorrhea and chancroid in a patient. Clinical features, relevan…

BACKGROUND: After many years of decline, the incidence of gonorrhea in Sweden reached an all-time low of 2.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 1996; however, the incidence has been increasing since 1997.
GOAL: To describe the reemergence of gonorrhea in Sweden using clinical epidemiologic data and microbiologic characterization of isolated strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
STUDY DESIGN: N gonorrhoeae strains isolated in Sweden from February 1998 to January 1999 were serotyped and an epidemiologic data questionnaire was sent to each clinician reporting a case of gonorrhea.
RESULTS: Epidemiolo…

OBJECTIVES: We examined the relationships between neighborhood conditions and gonorrhea.
METHODS: We assessed 55 block groups by rating housing and street conditions. We mapped all cases of gonorrhea between 1994 and 1996 and calculated aggregated case rates by block group. We obtained public school inspection reports and assigned findings to the block groups served by the neighborhood schools. A "broken windows" index measured housing quality, abandoned cars, graffiti, trash, and public school deterioration. Using data from the 1990 census and 1995 updates, we determined the association betw…

This study reviews the experience with gonorrhea and "pelvic inflammatory disease" in an emergency room of a university hospital. In spite of the large volume of critically ill patients seen in the emergency room, proper diagnostic methods and appropriate treatment for gonococcal disease were used by these physicians in over 90% of the cases. However, performance of serologic tests for detection of latent syphilis and the reporting of the disease to the Health Department were often overlooked. Two other problems in the management of these diseases were identified. One was the discovery of a lo…

We describe a sexual network consisting of 1 nonbinary-gendered participant and 2 male and 4 female participants in Australia, 2018. Six of 7 participants had oropharyngeal gonorrhea in the absence of urogenital gonorrhea. This observation supports a new paradigm of gonorrhea transmission in which oropharyngeal gonorrhea can be transmitted through tongue kissing.

We determined the conditions of 26 women who had recently been exposed to Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Infection was more common among women with more than one exposure (13/14) than among those with one exposure (6/12). Gonococcal infection was significantly associated with the presence of findings on physical examination suggestive of upper genital tract inflammation. Nine of 19 infected women had such findings; no uninfected women did. Among infected women, the prevalence of abnormal physical findings was 47% +/- 23% (95% confidence interval). These findings suggest that upper genital tract involv

Gonorrhea (caused by infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae) is the second most commonly reported notifiable disease in the United States (1). Left untreated, gonorrhea is associated with serious long-term adverse health effects, including pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. Infection also facilitates transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (2,3). Effective gonorrhea control relies upon early detection and effective antimicrobial treatment. To assess gonorrhea rate trends in Utah, the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) analyzed Utah National Electronic Disease Sur…

Gonorrhea is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. It continues to be a major cause of morbidity for women and has been linked to infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease. In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised the current treatment guidelines for gonorrhea in response to the rising rates of antibiotic resistance. This column will discuss the new guidelines, including the rationale for the change as well as nursing implications to support timely and effective treatment of gonorrhea.
