A 72-year-old man presented with the chief complaint of asymptomatic macroscopic hematuria. Cystoscopy revealed a non-papillary sessile tumor in the left bladder wall. Computed tomography revealed a large invasive tumor in the bladder and left hydronephrosis; no metastases were observed. Laboratory examination showed leukocytosis (27,600 /μl) and a high serum level of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF; 158 pg/ml). A diagnosis of locally advanced bladder cancer producing G-CSF was made; therefore, the patient underwent a total cystectomy and urinary diversion with an ileal conduit. H

Recent studies have revealed key roles for granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) in embryo implantation process and maintenance of pregnancy, and some studies showed promising results by using local intrauterine infusion of GCSF in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). This multicenter, randomized, controlled trial included 112 infertile women with repeated IVF failure to evaluate the efficacy of systemic single-dose subcutaneous GCSF administration on IVF success in these women. In this study, the Long Protocol of ovarian stimulation was used for all participants. Sealed, n…

We report a case of gastric adenosquamous carcinoma producing granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). A 60- year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of upper abdominal pain. Endoscopic examination revealed a large type 5 advanced gastric cancer with bleeding from the low body of stomach to the antrum, accompanied with para-aortic and mesenteric lymph node metastasis. He had marked leukocytosis, and serum levels of G-CSF were elevated. Histological diagnosis of the biopsy specimen was adenosquamous carcinoma producing G-CSF. We attempted combination chemotherapy with docetax

OBJECTIVE: To explore the roles of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in the pathogenesis of moyamoya disease.
METHODS: Serum G-CSF concentrations were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 20 children with moyamoya disease and 20 healthy children.
RESULTS: Serum G-CSF concentration (35.7+/-10.3 pg/mL) in children with moyamoya disease was significantly higher than that in healthy controls (23.5+/-3.8 pg/mL) (p<0.01).
CONCLUSIONS: The elevated serum G-CSF concentration in children with moyamoya disease suggests that G-CSF may play an important role in the pathogenes…

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) regulates proliferation, differentiation, and function of hematopoietic progenitor cells. Aside from expansion of hematopoietic cells, GM-CSF has shown efficacy in other diseases, including Crohn's disease. While GM-CSF being clinically used in humans, the ability to perform mechanistic studies in murine models is difficult due to the limited availability and rapid clearance of murine GM-CSF in the peripheral blood. To address these issues, we efficiently expressed murine GM-CSF under the control of the AOX1 gene promoter in Pichia past

We report on a 25 yr old woman with primary autoimmune hyperthyroidism who was treated with carbimazole. Forty-three days later she developed agranulocytosis (64 x 10(6)/l). With 4 days treatment with recombinant human Granulocyte Colony Stimulating factor the granulocyte count rose to normal--4,350 cells x 10(6)/l. This is considerably faster than the rate of spontaneous recovery which usually takes one to 2 weeks.

Aplastic anaemia is both frequent and difficult to manage in patients with dyskeratosis congenita (DC). We recently treated a 23-year-old male for a year with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and erythropoietin (Ep), with an excellent neutrophil response, and a transient effect on haemoglobin levels. G-CSF alone or combined with other cytokines may provide at least a partial effect in pancytopenic patients with DC.

A 40-year-old patient with long-standing Crohn's ileocolitis in remission experienced cyclic neutropenia with a periodicity of 14 days. He was not receiving immunosuppressive or myelosuppressive therapy. The patient had Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia resulting from central catheter infection, which was refractory to antibiotic therapy during the period of severe neutropenia. When granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was administered, the cyclic neutropenia rapidly disappeared, the neutrophil and leukocyte counts normalized, and the sepsis resolved. When G-CSF therapy was discontinue…

Several problems in the management of life-threatening mucormycosis remain unresolved, necessitating new methods of management. Four patients with histopathologically proven rhinocerebral mucormycosis were treated with high cumulative doses of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). All had multiple predisposing factors for mucormycosis, particularly leukemia and neutropenia. Two patients refractory to fluconazole therapy were treated with liposomal amphotericin B. The improvement in clinical manifestations was closely related to neutrophil recovery, and all patients were alive at the e…

We hypothesized that therapy with granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) would decrease intensity of murine Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia by upregulating alveolar macrophage function. Mice were depleted of CD4+ T lymphocytes and then inoculated intratracheally with P. carinii. Four weeks later, they received recombinant murine GM-CSF (rmGM-CSF) 5 micrograms/d subcutaneously for 7 and 14 d. At the end of therapy lung tissue was scored for intensity of P. carinii infection by silver methenamine stain and for inflammation by hematoxylin-eosin stain. We found that rmGM-CSF ther

The authors treated a patient with methimazol (Metothyrin)-induced agranulocytosis with human recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF). On day seven, after combined antibiotics, corticosteroid and at a dose of 270 ug daily subcutaneous GM-CSF therapy the septic state of the patients rapidly cured and the leucocytes reached the peripheric blood. No side effects were found. The publication of this case history might help to determine the place of human GM-CSF-s therapy in the treatment of agranulocytosis of different origin.

In conclusion, hematopoietic growth factors have been shown to enhance the recovery and function of circulating WBCs after standard-dose cancer therapy or high-dose cancer therapy with ABMT, and preliminary data strongly suggests that these agents may have the ability to restore leukocyte numbers and competence in AIDS, myelodysplastic syndromes, and other marrow failure states. Phase I and II trials of GM-CSF in patients with AIDS, cancer, marrow failure states, and following bone marrow transplantation have been published, and limited phase III randomized trial experiences have been reported
