Gun-Related and Other Violent Crime After Involuntary Commitment and Short-Term Emergency Holds.

This article presents a survival analysis of long-term risk of firearm-related and other violent crime in a large sample of adults with serious mental illness in Florida, comparing those who received a gun-disqualifying civil commitment after a short-term hold, those who were evaluated for commitment but were released or hospitalized voluntarily, and a third group with no holds or commitments. Among 77,048 adults with a diagnosis of schizophrenia-spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, or major depression, 42.7 percent were detained for psychiatric examination under Florida's Baker Act; of that d

The COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on mass shootings in six major US cities.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has significant impacts on the US socioeconomic structure. Gun violence is a major public health issue and the effects on this area have not been well-elucidated. The objective of this study was to determine the impacts of the pandemic on mass shootings in six major United States cities with historically high rates of gun violence. METHODS: Mass shooting data were extracted from an open-source database, Gun Violence Archive. Mass shooting was defined as four or more people shot at a single event. Data from six cities with the highest incidence of mass shootin…

Community Firearm Violence, Youth Depression, and Suicide Risk in Philadelphia: 2017-2024.

OBJECTIVES: Youth suicide and depression rates increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Philadelphia, firearm violence surged and has since declined to pre-pandemic levels. We examined whether youth depression and suicide risk also declined and whether community firearm violence moderated these trajectories, given its documented associations with trauma and stress in youth. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 71 663 well visits among youth aged 12 to 18 years in a pediatric primary care network in Philadelphia, 2017 to 2024. Youth were screened for depression and suicidality using

School shootings and mental health outcomes: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Recent data indicate a rising frequency of school shootings over the past two decades. Although these events are relatively rare within the broader context of firearm violence, more than 357 000 students have been exposed to firearm violence in primary and secondary schools since 1999. However, the psychological impacts remain poorly understood. This scoping review synthesises existing evidence and highlights gaps for further research. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Criminal Justice Abstracts to identify empirical studies on s

Violent Firearm Injury and Homelessness: Examining the Experiences of Black Men Participating in Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs.

Both experiencing homelessness and having survived a violent firearm injury are well-known risk factors for being a victim of violence. Despite there being significant racial disparities in these factors, there is no qualitative research examining the experiences of Black men who survive a gunshot wound and were homeless after their injury. Drawing on over a year of ethnographic research at the two busiest hospital-based violence intervention programs in the state of Maryland, this research centers the experiences of violently injured homeless Black men to understand how to best support their

Multilevel Associations Between Outlet Characteristics, Contextual Factors and Firearm Violence at On-Premise Alcohol Outlets in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Firearm violence is a major public health concern in the United States (US). Alcohol use and features of the alcohol environment, including outlet type and alcohol control policies, are factors known to increase the risk of firearm violence. On-premise alcohol outlets, where alcohol is sold and consumed on site, may influence firearm violence risk through modifications in the physical environment, social processes and policy contexts. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study examining the association between multilevel characteristics of on-premise alcohol outlets and other

Physical violence against women in Brazil: Findings from the 3rd Brazilian household survey on substance use.

Brazil has a historical gap regarding information on violence against women. Herein we aimed to evaluate the association of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics with physical violence against women in Brazil, as well as the possible escalation of violence to severe patterns of violence. We analysed data from the 3rd Brazilian Household Survey on Substance Use, in 2015. The main outcomes were reporting any physical violence and being stabbed/shot in the last 12-months. Logistic regressions were fitted to assess the association between socioeconomic and demographic variables with the ou

Hands Up! Atypical Defensive Reactions in Heavy Players of Violent Video Games When Exposed to Gun-Attack Pictures.

Threatening cues and surrounding contexts trigger specific defensive response patterns. Posturography, a technique for measuring postural strategies, has been used to evaluate motor defensive reactions in humans. When exposed to gun pointed pictures, humans were shown to exhibit an immobility reaction. Short and long-term exposure to violent video games was shown to be a causal risk factor for increased violent and aggressive behavior. Assaultive violence with a gun is a major trigger for motor defensive reactions, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most characteristic psychiatri

Nonsuicidal self-injury and interpersonal violence in U.S. veterans seeking help for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been defined as deliberately damaging one's body tissue without conscious suicidal intent. NSSI is a robust predictor of suicidal ideation and attempts in adults. While NSSI has been associated with other-directed violence in adolescent populations, the link between NSSI and interpersonal violence in adults is less clear. The current study examined the cross-sectional relationship between NSSI and past-year interpersonal violence among 729 help-seeking veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veterans who reported a recent history of engaging in cu

Mothers, sons, sisters and grief in the gangster economy: US necrogovernance in Philadelphia's low-income Puerto Rican diaspora.

Drawing on long-term participant-observation in Philadelphia's hyper-segregated Puerto Rican retail narcotics markets, we document the gendered contours of exploding cycles of firearm violence among young males striving to dominate street sales and the grief violence generates. Mothers and sisters intervene eloquently in court (and on the streets) defusing lethal violence. They clarify entangled chains of self-blame, promoting dialogue, accountability, and forgiveness. Although ambivalent about their own outlaw pasts, their 'streetwise' credibility increases their peacekeeping effectiveness. T

Support for age related firearm policies among Black American firearm owners: examining the role of children in the home.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, ownership of firearms has increased to approximately one-third of American households. Firearm access is a threat to child safety, with the most common location of fatal childhood firearm injury being at home. Exploring differences in opinions on gun violence prevention policies among Black firearm owners could inform community-supported interventions as one approach to reduce violent injuries among disproportionately affected youth. This study examined support for child-safety-related firearm policies among Black gun owners and whether support differed between tho…
