Description of sulcal organization of the insular cortex.

PURPOSE: To study the morphology of the gyri and sulci of the insular region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study examined 20 formalin-fixed cerebral hemispheres (10 right and 10 left). Observations described: the peri-insular sulci, anatomical variations in the insular sulci and gyri, and the relationships between the central insular sulcus and the central cerebral sulcus and the anatomy of the insular arteries. RESULTS: Each insula had a trapezoid shape, surrounded by four peri-insular sulci (anterior, superior, posterior, and inferior). We differentiated the posterior peri-insular sulcus fr

The subgenual anterior cingulate cortex in mood disorders.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) ventral to the genu of the corpus callosum has been implicated in the modulation of emotional behavior on the basis of neuroimaging studies in humans and lesion analyses in experimental animals. In a combined positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging study of mood disorders, we demonstrated that the mean gray matter volume of this "subgenual" ACC (sgACC) cortex is abnormally reduced in subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder, irrespective of mood state. Neuropathological assessments of sgACC tissue acquired postmortem

Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes in the Dentate Gyrus and Anterior Cingulate Cortex in a Mouse Model of Depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent, chronic, and relapse-prone psychiatric disease. However, the intermediate molecules resulting from stress and neurological impairment in different brain regions are still unclear. To clarify the pathological changes in the dentate gyrus (DG) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) regions of the MDD brain, which are the most closely related to the disease, we investigated the published microarray profile dataset GSE84183 to identify unpredictable chronic mild stress- (UCMS-) induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the DG and ACC regions. Standard craniotomy under general anesthesia with bridging vein-guided tailored transcortical resection for medial frontal glioma involving the cingulate gyrus: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gliomas of the medial frontal lobe extending into the gyrus cinguli represent a challenging neurosurgical entity because of their deep location, complex vascular anatomy, and proximity to functionally significant cortical and subcortical structures. Awake craniotomy with functional mapping, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based planning, neuronavigation, and cortical/subcortical stimulation represents an important contemporary strategy for maximal safe glioma resection, particularly for tumors located within or near eloquent networks. However, in carefully selected cases, standard m…

A developmental switch in corticoclaustral signaling.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a high-order cortical region involved in different functions including attention,1,2 pain processing,3,4,5 and predictive coding.6,7,8,9 ACC neurons send top-down inputs to several cortical and subcortical brain regions including the claustrum.10,11,12,13,14,15 Synaptic input from the ACC is thought to drive the activation of claustrum neurons, which in turn amplify and distribute ACC-related information back to the cortex to help orchestrate cortical networks during demanding cognitive states.12,16,17,18 However, the circuit mechanisms underlying ACC-cla

Bilateral Cingulotomy as a Therapeutic Option for Intractable Cancer Pain: a Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cingulotomy, a stereotactic neurosurgical procedure targeting the anterior cingulate cortex, has been explored for various refractory pain and neuropsychiatric conditions. However, while prior reviews have largely focused on chronic non-cancer pain, there remains a significant knowledge gap regarding its role in managing intractable cancer-related pain. This systematic review therefore aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of bilateral cingulotomy as a therapeutic option for cancer-associated pain, addressing a highly underexplored but clinically relevant area of neurosu

Déjà-vu sensation induced by cortical stimulation of the posterior cingulate cortex.

We report a case of a 19-year-old woman with drug-resistant focal epilepsy whose typical seizure semiology involved sensations of déjà-vu. She underwent intracranial stimulation, leading to déjà-vu upon stimulation of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). Most reports of induced déjà-vu and epilepsy-associated déjà-vu emphasize networks including temporal lobe, especially the rhinal cortices, as the generator of this phenomenon. However, evidence from healthy individuals and those with confirmed cingulate epilepsy suggests that the PCC may play a role in some experiences of déjà-vu or other dr

Altered interhemispheric functional connectivity in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and its potential in therapeutic response prediction.

The trajectory of voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) after medical treatment in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and its value in prediction of treatment response remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the pathophysiological mechanism of OCD, as well as biomarkers for prediction of pharmacological efficacy. Medication-free patients with OCD and healthy controls (HCs) underwent magnetic resonance imaging. The patients were scanned again after a 4-week treatment with paroxetine. The acquired data were subjected to VMHC, support vector regression (SVR), and correlation anal

Dissecting the neurocomputational bases of patch-switching.

The survival and well-being of humans require solving the patch-switching problem: we must decide when to stop collecting rewards in a current patch and travel somewhere else where gains may be higher. Previous studies suggested that frontal regions are underpinned by several processes in the context of foraging decisions such as tracking task difficulty, and/or the value of exploring the environment. To dissociate between these processes, participants completed an fMRI patch-switching learning task inspired by behavioral ecology. By analyzing >11,000 trials collected across 21 participants, w

Topographical similarity of cortical thickness represents generalized anxiety symptoms in adolescence.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry, along with its high comorbidity rates. Despite increasing efforts to identify the neural underpinnings of GAD, neuroimaging research using cortical thickness have yielded largely inconsistent results. To address this, we adopted an inter-subject representational similarity analysis framework to explore a potential nonlinear relationship between vertex-wise cortical thickness and generalized anxiety symptom severity. We utilized a sample of 120 adolescents (13-18 years of age) from the

Prelimbic neuron assemblies with delayed activation encode the economic decision-making process in a bandit game.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is critical to an animal's value-based decision-making process. However, due to heterogeneity of local mPFC neurons, which neuron group and how it contributes to the alteration of the animal's decision is yet to be explored. And the effect of empty reward in this process is often neglected. Here, we adopted a two-port bandit game paradigm for mice and applied synchronized calcium imaging to the prelimbic area of the mPFC. The results showed that neurons recruited in the bandit game exhibit three distinct firing patterns. Specially, neurons with delayed activ

Changes in neural activity following a randomized trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for hoarding disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious for hoarding disorder (HD), though results are modest. HD patients show an increase in activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) when making decisions. The aim of this study is to determine whether CBT's benefits follow improvements in dACC dysfunction or abnormalities previously identified in other brain regions. METHOD: In this randomized clinical trial of 64 treatment-seeking HD patients, patients received group CBT, delivered weekly for 16 weeks, versus wait list. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to e

Network Localization of Awareness in Visual and Motor Anosognosia.

OBJECTIVE: Unawareness of a deficit, anosognosia, can occur for visual or motor deficits and lends insight into awareness itself; however, lesions associated with anosognosia occur in many different brain locations. METHODS: We analyzed 267 lesion locations associated with either vision loss (with and without awareness) or weakness (with and without awareness). The network of brain regions connected to each lesion location was computed using resting-state functional connectivity from 1,000 healthy subjects. Both domain specific and cross-modal associations with awareness were identified. RES

A network approach to the topological organization of the Brodmann map.

Brain morphology is the result of functional factors associated with cortical areas, but it is also influenced by structural aspects due to physical and spatial constraints. Despite the noticeable advances in brain mapping, Brodmann's map is still used in many research fields that rely on macroscopic cortical features for practical or theoretical issues. Here, the topological relationships among the Brodmann areas were modeled according to the principles of network analysis, in order to provide a synthetic view of their spatial properties following a criterion of contiguity. The model evidence

Reduced functional connectivity supports statistical learning of temporally distributed regularities.

Statistical learning is a powerful ability that extracts regularities from our environment and makes predictions about future events. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we aimed to probe how a wide range of brain areas are intertwined to support statistical learning, characterising its architecture in the whole-brain functional connectivity (FC). Participants performed a statistical learning task of temporally distributed regularities. We used refined behavioural learning scores to associate individuals' learning performances with the FC changed by statistical learning. As a result,

The human posterior cingulate, retrosplenial, and medial parietal cortex effective connectome, and implications for memory and navigation.

The human posterior cingulate, retrosplenial, and medial parietal cortex are involved in memory and navigation. The functional anatomy underlying these cognitive functions was investigated by measuring the effective connectivity of these Posterior Cingulate Division (PCD) regions in the Human Connectome Project-MMP1 atlas in 171 HCP participants, and complemented with functional connectivity and diffusion tractography. First, the postero-ventral parts of the PCD (31pd, 31pv, 7m, d23ab, and v23ab) have effective connectivity with the temporal pole, inferior temporal visual cortex, cortex in the
