[Non-traumatic subluxation of the scaphoid bone of the hand].

It is demonstrated in three clinical case reports that a subluxation of the scaphoid bone and a diastasis between the scaphoid and the lunate can occur in association not only with traumatic injury but with chronic inflammatory conditions of the wrist. In one case the etiology was purulent synovitis, in the 2nd an unspecific synovitis with serous exudate, and in the 3rd case rheumatoid arthritis.

Development of a simplified new method of bone age estimation using three bones of the hand and wrist.

UNLABELLED: Though the Greulich and Pyle (GP) method is easy, inter-observer variability, differential maturation of hand bones influences ratings. The Tanner-Whitehouse (TW) method is more accurate, but cumbersome. A simpler method combining the above, such that it utilizes fewer bones without affecting accuracy, would be widely used and more applicable in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: 1. Devising a simplified method utilizing three bones of the hand and wrist for bone age (BA) assessment. 2. Testing whether the 3 bone method gives comparable results to standard methods (GP,TW2,TW3) in Indi…

[Measurement of bone mineral density of metacarpal and phalangeal bones of the hand by dual X-ray absorptiometry].

Bone mineral density (BMD) of the metacarpal and phalangeal bones of the hand was evaluated using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in 104 healthy subjects, 35 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 6 young male volunteers with a short arm cast. BMD was positively correlated with the bone volume of metacarpal and phalangeal bones in skeletal specimens. In healthy subjects, the mean values for BMD of metacarpals of the index and middle fingers were significantly higher than those of the ring and little fingers (p < 0.001). The BMD of the middle proximal phalanx was the highest among the prox

Opsismodysplasia: a new type of chondrodysplasia with predominant involvement of the bones of the hand and the vertebrae.

The name opsismodysplasia is proposed for a new chondrodysplasia, which was studied in three patients. Clinically, the condition is recognized at birth on the basis of shortness, short hands, and facial abnormalities with a short nose and a depressed bridge of nose. The most characteristic radiographic signs are: very retarded bone maturation; marked shortness of the bones of the hands and of the feet with concave metaphyses; and thin, lamellar vertebral bodies. The growth cartilage studied in one case showed a wide hypertrophic area containing thick connective tissue septa, irregular provisio

[Cancellous bone harvesting from the distal radius for reconstruction of bone defects in the hand].

OBJECTIVE: Extraction of cancellous bone from the distal radius for reconstructive procedures on the hand. INDICATIONS: All reconstructive procedures on the hand for which a corticocancellous and/or vascularized bone graft or a large amount of cancellous bone is not required. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Acute distal radius fracture, osteosynthesis material embedded in the distal radius, e.g., after palmar plate osteosynthesis of a distal radius fracture, tumor in the distal radius. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: Removal of cancellous bone from the distal radius radially from the dorsal radial tuberosity via a

Delayed primary bone grafting in the hand and wrist after traumatic bone loss.

Seventeen patients had 21 bone graft operations as part of the overall delayed primary management of hand and wrist wounds. All bone graftings were performed within 10 days of injury. Internal or external fixation was used in all cases, and all wounds healed without infection. Complications included a fibrous union at one bone graft juncture and one malunion. Follow-up was from 3 months to 7 years. Successful delayed primary bone grafting requires a well-decompressed and surgically-clean wound, good blood supply, adequate fixation, and secure soft-tissue cover. If these conditions cannot be me

Aneurysmal bone cyst and giant cell tumor of bone of the hand and distal radius.

Aneurysmal bone cyst and giant cell tumor of bone have historically been considered benign lesions that can behave in locally aggressive fashion. The clinical and pathologic findings share some common characteristics. When considering a radiographic differential diagnosis, these entities are usually considered together. There are some very distinct differences in potential aggressiveness and in response to treatment. This report summarizes current knowledge regarding these lesions when they occur in the hand and outlines current treatment methods.

[Combined carpometacarpal dislocations, hand lesions and fractures of the two bones of the forearm: a report of two cases].

The authors report two cases of complete dorsal carpometacarpal dislocations associated with lesions of the hand and the two bones of forearm. These dislocations are rare, and their clinical and radiological diagnosis is difficult. These cases are original through the association of carpometacarpal dislocation with lesions of the two bones of forearm. They demonstrate the need to stress the importance of a complete evaluation of the patient. Treatment must be immediate and begin with the osteosynthesis of the proximal lesions to avoid any irreducibility. These elements will determine the funct

Family-based association study of polymorphisms in the RUNX2 locus with hand bone length and hand BMD.

Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone strength. Bone size and bone mineral density (BMD) are major bone strength determinants. Identification of genes affecting the variability of these traits should improve prognosis and management of osteoporosis. This research was aimed to test the hypothesis of association of radiographic hand bone length (BL) and BMD with polymorphisms in the RUNX2 locus. Four SNPs linked to the two RUNX2 promoters were genotyped in 212 nuclear Caucasian families. These SNPs and four pairwise haplotypes were tested for association with eight BL and BMD traits, adj

[Hand bones disorders in vibrational disease caused by local vibration should be considered as pathogenetic characteristic of the disease].

Opposite to the authors of the publication, that dystrophic changes in locomotory apparatus of hands and shoulders girdle could not be considered as vibration disease signs, the article authors believe that hand bone changes--tuberosity of distal finger bones, cystic transparency, local osteoporosis--could be pathogenetic signs of vibration disease, along with vascular and neurologic signs. The authors agree that periarthrosis, miofibrosis, if characterized properly through sanitary and hygienic regulations in new List of Occupational diseases, that will be put into practical medicine in the n

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the hand: a report of four cases.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign lesions that rarely occur in the bones of the hand. Curettage and bone grafting are the most common treatment modalities performed considering the possible functional loss after total excision. Four cases of aneurysmal bone cyst of the hand were identified. Three out of four cases were treated initially with curettage and bone grafting alone without any other local therapy. One had total excision of the lesion. There were two recurrences in the curettage group. Both were treated with excision and followed up for a minimum of 12 months. Curettage alone was assoc

Bone-lengthening for symbrachydactyly of the hand with the technique of callus distraction.

BACKGROUND: Bone-lengthening in the hand and foot is a relatively new application for distraction osteogenesis. We present the operative treatment and postoperative outcome for four patients with M ller type-D symbrachydactyly of the hand who underwent metacarpal lengthening with use of a distraction device to establish pinch function. METHODS: Four patients who underwent distraction osteogenesis for the treatment of congenital symbrachydactyly of the hand were evaluated over a thirteen-year period. The nondominant right hand was treated in two patients, and the nondominant left hand was trea

Primary bone tumours of the hand. Report of 21 cases.

Twenty-one primary bone tumours of the hand in children from 8 paediatric hospitals are reported. Osteochondromas and enchondromas were not included. Our material consisted of 16 patients with common tumours (3 Ewing's sarcoma, 5 aneurysmal bone cyst, 6 osteoid osteoma and 2 epidermoid cyst) and 5 patients with uncommon tumours (osteoma, simple bone cyst, haemangiopericytoma, capillary angiomatous tumour and benign ossifying fibroma or osteoblastoma). The X-ray diagnosis of the common tumours should have high concordance with histology, whereas that of uncommon tumours is much more difficult a
