Latvian Nursing Students' Experience of Workplace Violence During Clinical Placement.

AIM: To explore workplace violence (WPV) amongst Latvian undergraduate nursing students during clinical placements. BACKGROUND: Workplace violence has profound consequences. Nursing students on placement are often victims of non-verbal and verbal abuse, physical or sexual violence, causing psychological problems, hindering their professional identity and causing them to leave the nursing profession. Numerous studies indicate the problem's extent, yet reporting in the Baltic region has been absent in the literature. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. METHODS: This study, conducted October to De

Non-accidental harms ('abuse') in athletes with impairment ('para athletes'): a state-of-the-art review.

OBJECTIVE: Para athletes reap significant health benefits from sport but are vulnerable to non-accidental harms. Little is known about the types and impacts of non-accidental harms Para athletes face. In this literature review, we summarise current knowledge and suggest priorities for future research related to non-accidental harms in Para athletes. DESIGN: Six electronic databases were searched between August and September 2017. 2245 articles were identified in the initial title/abstract review, and 202 records were selected for full-text review following preliminary screening. Adults are just as susceptible to memory suggestibility when reporting about single and repeated events.

Exposure to misleading suggestive questions can distort adults' memory for single events, but it is unclear whether this is also the case following a repeated event, such as domestic abuse and sexual harassment. Participants viewed one (single event, n = 56) or four videos (repeated event) depicting domestic abuse. One-week after the only, or the final instance, participants were exposed to misleading suggestive questions about non-experienced details, before providing a final recall report about the target instance. Repeated-event participants were either prompted to recall the last instance

Women Veterans' definitions of peer support: A qualitative description analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Women are the fastest-growing subpopulation of U.S. military Veterans, yet their voices have rarely been used to explore peer support among Veterans. This study defines Veteran peer support from the perspective of women Veterans and aims to increase providers' awareness of the value of peer support for improving Veteran mental health. METHODS: Data were drawn from a multi-site evaluation of Veteran peer programs. Transcripts from semi-structured interviews with women Veterans (N = 25) were selected and analyzed. Guided by a qualitative description approach, the researchers used

Mental health and substance use risks and resiliencies in a U.S. sample of transgender and gender diverse adults.

PURPOSE: Victimization contributes to mental and behavioral health inequities among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people, but few studies have simultaneously examined health-promoting resiliencies. We sought to identify classes of risk and resilience among TGD adults, assess characteristics associated with these classes, and examine their relationship with mental health and substance use outcomes. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were from the 2015 US Transgender Survey, a non-probability study including 26,957 TGD adults. Using latent class analysis, we classified patterns of vulnerabili

Chronic cohabitation with CD1 male mice induces anxiety-like behaviors, reduced spontaneous alternation, dysregulated HPA axis, and disrupted sleep architecture in C57BL/6J female mice.

In contrast to the well-documented phenomena of inter-male aggression and competition in nature, the long-term consequences for females involuntarily exposed to persistent male-initiated social threat remain inadequately understood. In the present study, we demonstrate that C57BL/6J female mice co-housed with CD1 male mice for 14 days developed anxiety-like behaviors and cognitive deficits, without exhibiting depressive-like phenotypes. Concurrently, these females displayed a significant decrease in serum estrogen levels and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Furth

Victimization among adolescents of female sex workers: findings from the children of at-risk parents (CARP) study in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) live and work in high-risk environments, experience high levels of adversity, and have multigenerational trauma that can negatively affect their children. Yet not much is known about the prevalence of victimization (i.e., exposure to maltreatment and trauma) among children of FSWs. This study compared the prevalence of lifetime victimization among adolescents of FSWs and adolescents of non-FSWs in Gulu City, Northern Uganda. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents (10-17 years) enrolled in the Children of At-Risk Paren

Quality improvement in forensic mental health: the East London forensic violence reduction collaborative.

Ward-based violence is the most significant cause of reported safety incidents at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT). It impacts on patient and staff safety, well-being, clinical care and the broader hospital community in various direct and indirect ways. The contributing factors are varied and complex. Several factors differentiate the forensic setting, which has been identified as a particularly stressful work environment. Staff must constantly balance addressing therapeutic needs with robust risk management in a complex patient cohort. ELFT identified reducing inpatient physical violen

Prevalence of workplace violence against healthcare workers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

We aim to quantitatively synthesise available epidemiological evidence on the prevalence rates of workplace violence (WPV) by patients and visitors against healthcare workers. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science from their inception to October 2018, as well as the reference lists of all included studies. Two authors independently assessed studies for inclusion. Data were double-extracted and discrepancies were resolved by discussion. The overall percentage of healthcare worker encounters resulting in the experience of WPV was estimated using random-effects meta-analysi

For Whom Does Hate Crime Hurt More? A Comparison of Consequences of Victimization Across Motives and Crime Types.

Hate crimes have been found to have more severe consequences than other parallel crimes that were not motivated by the offenders' hostility toward someone because of their real or perceived difference. Many countries today have hate crime laws that make it possible to increase the penalties for such crimes. The main critique against hate crime laws is that they punish thoughts. Instead, proponents of hate crime laws argue that sentence enhancement is justified because hate crimes cause greater harm. This study compares consequences of victimization across groups of victims to test for whom hat

Workplace Violence Against Primary Care Clinicians: A Narrative Review.

Workplace violence (WPV) is a commonly reported occupational hazard in healthcare and its prevalence is increasing. WPV occurs in all types of practice settings, but little is known about WPV in primary care settings in the United States (US). Because primary care practice settings differ from the inpatient settings, further examination of WPV in primary care is warranted. Our objective was to summarize the available literature highlight important gaps. We conducted a search using Pubmed and OVID for US studies of WPV in US-based adult primary care practices. Studies including only pediatric p

A gender-based review of workplace violence amongst the global health workforce-A scoping review of the literature.

Workplace violence (WPV) impacts all levels of the health workforce, including the individual provider, organization, and society. While there is a substantial body of literature on various aspects of WPV against the health workforce, gender-based WPV (GB-WPV) has received less attention. Violence in both the workplace and broader society is rooted in gendered socio-economic, cultural, and institutional factors. Developing a robust understanding of GB-WPV is crucial to explore the differing experiences, responses, and outcomes of GB-WPV with respect to gender. We conducted a scoping review and
