Specific immunization issues in the occupational health setting.

This article looks at the components of an effective occupational health vaccination programme and also reviews the legal basis for them. It addresses the issue of vaccine licensing including pre-clinical, clinical and post-licensing studies. It explores screening for vaccine preventable diseases in the occupational health setting and then addresses particular issues around hepatitis B, chicken pox, tuberculosis, measles, rubella, diphtheria, polio, mumps and hepatitis A.

Recent advances in occupational health research in Korea.

Korea has a short history in research on occupational health like as short history of industrialization. During last four decades, however, Korea has experienced what developed countries have experienced for more than a hundred year. Research on occupational health in Korea has also drastically developed. Since industrialization in 1970s, many workers were exposed to hazardous working environment and suffered from occupational accidents and diseases. The main research topics were pneumoconiosis, noise-induced hearing loss and some chemical poisoning. However, improving working condition was no

Preparing for smallpox: occupational health nursing update.

Smallpox has plagued humans for thousands of years. Although smallpox has been eliminated as an active disease in humans, there is a threat that terrorist organizations or nations could use smallpox as a weapon against the population of the United States. The U.S. government has recognized this threat and has asked the CDC to prepare for such a possibility. A plan to identify, treat, and vaccinate the population in any area of the country where an outbreak of smallpox might occur has been developed and is being implemented. The CDC plan calls for rapid response by local, state, and federal res

Bioterrorism. Implications for the occupational and environmental health nurse.

1. Bioterrorism is the intentional release of a biological agent--bacterial, viral, or genetically altered--to instill fear or create chaos, massive casualities, illness, and death in humans, animals, or plants. 2. The threat of bioterrorism is real. Although every community is vulnerable, terrorists seek densely populated, highly visible targets. 3. Occupational and environmental health nurses must to be able to recognize and report signs and symptoms of an early bioweapons outbreak in their workplaces and communities. Only thorough preparedness and planning will result in effective mitigatio

New filling materials--an occupational health hazard.

The acrylic content of dental composites poses a risk of adverse reactions. Although the quantities of the substances released are probably too small to cause systemic reactions, local skin or mucosal reactions may arise from direct contact with dental composites. In fact, epidemiological data suggest that most known side effects of dental resins are occupational dermatoses. They may either be due to irritation or allergy. In the Scandinavian countries, occupational dermatoses are relatively common among dental staff, sometimes entailing occupational disability and re-schooling. Most of these

Varicella vaccination. An overview for the occupational health nurse.

1. Varicella-zoster virus is highly communicable. Non-immune adults are susceptible to infection and, if infected, have increased risk of complications. 2. Adult varicella infection poses significant economic loss for the infected employee and potentially for exposed coworkers and the employer. Health care employers also must be concerned about transmission of varicella infection to clients. 3. Varicella vaccine is now available, well tolerated, and prevents infection in approximately 94% of vaccinees. The occupational health nurse needs to consider varicella vaccination for employees suscepti

Occupational health problems among dental hygienists.

A questionnaire survey on work-related health complaints was performed among dental hygienists. Valid information was received fom 189 hygienists, representing about half of all active members of the Norwegian Association of Dental Hygienists. Parallel information was received from similar number of female and male control persons in other occupations. The present report presents data on the nature and etiology of the chemically induced health complaints. About half of the hygienists had experienced one or more health problem of dermal, systemic, sensory (eye) or respiratory nature during the

Occupational health. Manual handling: proposed regulations.

Injuries associated with manual handling operations account for most workplace injuries reported to the Health and Safety Executive and local authorities. In the health care services, they account for almost 50 per cent of all injuries reported under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RlDDOR) of 1985 (1). This article examines how proposed legislation may be applied to make the industry safer, drawing on work being carried out by some health authorities and organisations such as the Back Pain Association and WING (The Work-Injured Nurses Group of the Roy

Occupational attainment in selected allied health professions.

This study examined the factors in the process of occupational attainment for a single group, the allied health professions. A 14-variable causal model was developed to explain postcollege attainment of a job in one of five allied health professions: medical dietetics, medical social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech therapy. The sample was composed of 272 college students who responded to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program surveys of 1971 and 1980. Analysis indicated that several variables, including academic integration, having a science major, and being ori

[Education of the workers and their participation in occupational health programs].

In addition to being exposed to the variables and factors that affect the health of the entire population, workers are vulnerable to other risk factors of a biological, chemical, physical, psychosocial and biotechnological nature. These factors cause work-related accidents and occupational and other work-related diseases. Biological factors may be present at workplaces and can spread rapidly in a dense population such as that of an industrial community. Chemical factors can cause acute intoxication and chronic and prepathological conditions, and physical factors include vibrations and ionizing

Tobacco smoke in the workplace: an occupational health hazard.

Tobacco smoke, which contains over 50 known carcinogens and many other toxic agents, is a health hazard for nonsmokers who are regularly exposed to it while at work. Involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke annoys and irritates many healthy nonsmokers. Serious acute health effects are probably limited to the one fifth of the population with pre-existing health conditions that are aggravated by exposure to tobacco smoke. The consequences of long-term exposure include decreased lung function and lung cancer. Existing air quality standards for workplaces do not directly specify an acceptable level f

Occupational zoonoses, neurological diseases, and public health: A one health approach.

Zoonotic diseases, which constitute 60% of all human infectious diseases, present substantial risks to public health, economies, and livelihoods. These diseases emerge at the human-animal-environment interface, with occupational exposure representing a critical yet underexamined dimension of zoonotic risk. Workers in high-risk sectors such as agriculture, wildlife management, and laboratory research face elevated exposure to zoonotic pathogens, often under conditions of inadequate preventive measures and resource constraints. Neurological disorders resulting from zoonotic infections, including

The unique health needs of young women: application for occupational health professionals.

This article presents some alternate views on how young women maintain health and how occupational health nurses can intervene with illness. These interventions are based on relational theories that address the importance of healthy connections for health and growth, and propose disconnections as what (Miller & Stiver, 1977): underlies many of the problems common to women in particular, including depression, various forms of anxiety, eating problems, and so-called personality disorders." (p. 81) Interventions outlined include teaching young women and families how to deconstruct damaging media
