OBJECTIVE: The present study examines a measure of cardiac autonomic function, the heart rate variability (HRV), in a group of depressed elderly. Cardiac autonomic abnormalities have been implicated as a potential mediator of cardiovascular events and sudden death in depression. Because aging is associated with decreased cardiac vagal activity, it is possible that autonomic abnormalities are even more pronounced in the older depressed patients.

Objective of the paper was to determine the fetal heart rate (FHR) changes that occur in preterm fetuses whose mothers have suffered antepartum bleeding, versus uncomplicated controls. The sinusoidal fetal heart rate pattern is significantly associated with severe fetal anaemia when seen in the antenatal period. Strict adherence to definition is important, as pseudosinusoidal patterns do not have the same grave prognostic significance. If this fetal heart rate pattern is seen antenatally it is our contention that the baby should be delivered urgently by Caesarean section, unless the fetal anaemia can be treated in utero.

Changes of heart frequency have been studied in diabetic neuropathy by blocking autonomic innervation of the heart with atropine and propranolol (intrinsic rate). It was found that in diabetic neuropathy the initial heart rate was higher than in the controls and in non-neutropathic diabetics, but this higher frequency could not be increased any further by the administration of atropine and propranolol compared to the values registered in the other two groups.

Fetal Heart Rate (F.H.R.) in association with fetal movement was evaluated in 141 normal and pathological pregnancies. In the normal cases only 31% showed an acceleration of F.H.R. in association with fetal movement. The majority of the normal cases, 62%, did not demonstrate changes in F.H.R. in association with fetal movement. In the pathological pregnancies there were no characteristic changes in F.H.R. associated with fetal movement. It appears that F.H.R. acceleration associated with fetal movement cannot be used as an index for fetal well being.
