Biopsy specimens from the gastric mucosa of 149 patients who underwent gastroduodenal endoscopy for upper gastrointestinal complaints were studied by light microscopy and culture. Spiral shaped bacteria were detected in four of the specimens by smears with Gram stain. The positive rate was 2.68%, but these bacteria and HP did not grow in culture. The characteristic helical morphology of the bacteria appears to be similar to that of the bacteria found in the stomach of cats and dogs. And what of significance in these cases is the presence of spiral shaped bacteria in association with chronic ga

BACKGROUND: Vagal nerve plays an important role in the stomach function. The cholinergic nerves are the most abundantly distributed nerves in the gastric tissue. It has recently been reported that the vagal nerve is significantly related to both gastric cancer development and progression. However, its relation to the mesenchymal tumor, including MALT lymphoma, is not known. In this study, we investigated the effect of unilateral truncal vagotomy on gastric MALT lymphoma development by using Helicobacter heilmannii-infected mouse model as well as that of bilateral truncal vagotomy on stress-ind

Gastric ulcer is a common disease affecting pigs worldwide, with a prevalence reported as high as 93%. The cause of porcine gastric ulcer is multifactorial, with Helicobacter suis (H. suis) being considered as the primary pathogenic factor. To date, prevalence of H. suis resulting in porcine gastric ulcer in Taiwan has not been investigated. In this study, we collected 360 pig stomachs from the slaughterhouses. In addition, stomach tissues from the 88 diseased pigs submitted for necropsy were divided into symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. Gastric lesions were scored, and polymerase chain re

Helicobacter suis colonizes the stomachs of a variety of animals, including humans, and is more likely than other Helicobacter species to induce gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Obesity is a low-grade chronic inflammatory state in which the induction of a chemokine network contributes to a variety of diseases. However, the effect of obesity on the development of gastric MALT in the presence of H. suis infection remains unclear. Here, we reveal that high-fat-diet-induced obesity upregulates the expression of lymphoid chemokines in the stomach and accelerates the H. suis infec

During the last decade several new Helicobacter species have been isolated from human gastric mucosa, fecal samples, liver, and gallbladder. Gastric corkscrew-shaped Helicobacter species: H. heilmannii is usually seen in the gastric foveolae in 0.2-0.6% of histological sections from the gastric mucosa of patients with dyspepsia in Western Europe, but it has only been cultured once. It is genetically and morphologically closely related to H. bizzozeronii and H. salmonis which are common in dogs and cats. It causes constantly active chronic gastritis and is regularly associated with peptic ulcer

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) is still unknown. There are many reports of NHPH-infected patients suffering from gastric diseases. Here, we investigated the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positivity of NHPH infection in gastric disease patients who were negative for H. pylori (Hp) by the rapid urease test and by pathological observation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected the 296 endoscopically obtained gastric mucosal samples of Hp-negative gastric disease patients diagnosed based on a rapid urease test and pathology from 17 hospitals i

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that eradication therapy was more effective against Helicobacter pylori (Hp)-negative gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma in non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH)-positive cases than in NHPH-negative cases and that the infection status of NHPH could be a predictive marker for the efficacy of eradication therapy for H. pylori negative gastric MALT lymphoma. However, a diagnostic test for NHPH infection has not yet been clinically established. In this study, we investigated the endoscopic findings in cases of H. suis-infected ga

A 53-year-old woman visited a doctor and complained of chest discomfort after meals. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed multiple granular elevations in the gastric body. After biopsies from the elevations, she was diagnosed with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Polymerase chain reaction also detected Helicobacter pylori and H. suis. Treatment to eradicate H. pylori and H. suis was successful. Endoscopic examination after the bacterial eradication treatment showed that multiple granular elevations remained in the gastric body; however, no lymphoma cells were found during histop

Helicobacter (H.) suis can colonize the stomach of pigs as well as humans, causing chronic gastritis and other gastric pathological changes including gastric ulceration and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Recently, a virulence factor of H. suis, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), has been demonstrated to play an important role in the induction of human gastric epithelial cell death and modulation of lymphocyte proliferation depending on glutamine and glutathione catabolism. In the present study, the relevance of GGT in the pathogenesis of H. suis infection was studied in mouse

Helicobacter suis colonizes the stomach of most pigs and is the most prevalent non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species found in the human stomach. In the human host, H. suis contributes to the development of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and MALT lymphoma, whereas in pigs it is associated with gastritis, decreased growth and ulcers. Here, we demonstrate that the level of H. pylori and H. suis binding to human and pig gastric mucins varies between individuals with species dependent specificity. The binding optimum of H. pylori is at neutral pH whereas that of H. suis has an acidi

A 16-year-old Caucasian male presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Endoscopy revealed erythematous antral mucosa with four discrete gastric ulcers. Biopsies showed multiple spiral organisms, 4-6 microns in length, lying in the mucous layer on the surface. The organisms were strongly Giemsa positive and weakly CLOtest positive. They did not stain with Warthin-Starry silver or Gram-Weigert stains. Electron microscopy revealed fragments of Gastrospirillum hominis, with its characteristic spiral shape and length of 4 microns in the plane of section. We believe that this is one of th

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALT) is seldom considered a diagnosis hypothesis in symptomatic patients. These lymphomas present as a main risk factor for chronic gastritis due to Helicobacter pylori infection. H. pylori leads to chronic inflammation, producing lymphoid tissue in the stomach mucosa (MALT) possibly leading to malignant transformation. Even though H. pylori remains one of the most important factors in the development of MALT lymphoma, it is not mandatory in the evolution of MALT lymphoma since high-grade lymphomas present a lower prevalence of H. pylori. The preval

Gastric Helicobacter spp. are associated with chronic inflammation and neoplastic transformation in humans as well as domestic and laboratory species. The present study examined the association of Helicobacter heilmannii (Hhe) infection in pet cats with feline gastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Tissues were collected via gastric biopsy or at necropsy from 47 pet cats with clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease, including vomiting and inappetance, and classified as gastritis (14/47), lymphoma (31/37), or normal (2/47). Tissues positive for argyrophilic organisms with

This article focuses on the pathogenic significance of Helicobacter species naturally colonizing the stomach of dogs, cats and pigs. These gastric "non-Helicobacter (H.) pylori Helicobacter species" (NHPH) are less well-known than the human adapted H. pylori. Helicobacter suis has been associated with gastritis and decreased daily weight gain in pigs. Several studies also attribute a role to this pathogen in the development of hyperkeratosis and ulceration of the non-glandular stratified squamous epithelium of the pars oesophagea of the porcine stomach. The stomach of dogs and cats can be colo

Following the demonstration of Helicobacter pylori as a major gastroduodenal pathogen there was a need to develop animal models in order to investigate mechanisms of pathogenesis and to be able to test new treatment strategies. Helicobacter pylori will only colonize a limited number of hosts including non-human primates, germ-free or barrier raised piglets, germ-free dogs and recently laboratory raised cats. Although these models have proved useful there is a need for more convenient small animal models. The ferret infected with its natural gastric organism, Helicobacter mustelae, is the only

Helicobacter species infections may be associated with the development of gastric disorders, such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia and gastric carcinoma. Binding of these bacteria to the gastric mucosa occurs through the recognition of specific glycan receptors expressed by the host epithelial cells. This review addresses the state of the art knowledge on these host glycan structures and the bacterial adhesins involved in Helicobacter spp. adhesion to gastric mucosa colonization. Glycans are expressed on every cell surface and they are crucial for several biologica

Tightly coiled spiral micro-organisms (Gastrospirillum hominis), distinct from Helicobacter pylori, were found in the gastric mucosa of a 66-year-old man with a 4-month history of intermittent epigastric pain. The organisms were distributed in the antral mucosa, which showed erosive gastritis; histologically, the affected mucosa presented moderate to severe chronic gastritis with focal neutrophil infiltration. After a 2-week administration of cimetidine, his symptoms resolved and the active inflammation was reduced, both endoscopically and histologically, but the organisms still remained. Biop
