In Guatemala, an indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test for onchocerciasis, performed with a crude saline extract of Onchocerca volvulus and blood samples taken on filter paper, showed a high level of sensitivity and specificity. IHA titers of blood samples from the ear lobe taken on filter paper and of sera obtained by venipuncture showed a high correlation.

Sera from 153 wild animals of 18 species were tested for antibodies against 12 serovars of Leptospira by the microscopic agglutination (MA) test. Seventy-five percent of the animals tested were seropositive against one or more of the 12 serovars used. The most commonly found serovars were pomona, autumnalis, pyrogenes, icterohaemorrhagiae, australis, and canicola. Human "O" cells were fixed with pyruvic aldehyde, treated with tannic acid, and fixed with glutaraldehyde. The cells were sensitized with amoeba antigen and stored in a refrigerator. The sensitized cells were used periodically for the indirect hemagglutination test with a battery of sera from patients with intestinal amebiasis and confirmed and unconfirmed amebic liver abscess, and also from negative controls. A passive hemagglutination test devised for diagnosis of trench fever was easily performed and highly sensitive and specific. Tanned sheep erythrocytes were sensitized with soluble antigen from Rochalimaea quintana. The test detected antibody in six of seven cases of primary infection and in four cases of late, relapsed trench fever. Titers of antibody ranged from 1:20 to 1:640. Although both IgM and IgG antibody to R. quintana were detected by passive hemagglutination, IgG appeared to be the major reactive antibody.
