Heredity in epilepsy: neurodevelopment, comorbidity, and the neurological trait.

The genetic bases of common, nonmendelian epilepsy have been difficult to elucidate. In this article, we argue for a new approach to genetic inquiry in epilepsy. In the latter part of the 19th century, epilepsy was universally acknowledged to be part of a wider "neurological trait" that included other neuropsychiatric conditions. In recent years, studies of comorbidity have shown clear links between epilepsy and various neuropsychiatric disorders including psychosis and depression, and genetic studies of copy number variants (CNVs) have shown that in some cases, the same CNV underpins neuropsy

Heredity and risk of cancer of the esophagus and gastric cardia.

The importance of genetic factors in the etiology of esophageal cancer is uncertain. We addressed the question of heredity in a population-based, nationwide case-control study conducted in Sweden during 1995 through 1997. The study involved 189 patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma, 262 with cardia adenocarcinoma, 167 with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and, for comparison, 820 control subjects. Familial occurrence of cancer was explored at face-to-face interviews. Logistic regression, with multivariate adjustment for potential confounders, was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs), which…

[Heredity as an etiologic factor in dentistry (oral genetics)].

The oral genetics is the part of the stomatology that is related to the questions of heredity. The oral genetics searches the typical morphological characteristics, the congenital anomalies, other pathological alterations and diseases, as well as hereditary syndromes. The author describes the genetical relevance of the two most important oral diseases: caries and parodontopathy.

Tics and heredity. A study of the relatives of child tiqueurs.

The limited literature on the pedigrees of tiqueurs, including those with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, is reviewed. Most statistical analyses have been restricted to affected family members without specifying the unaffected ones. The present statistical analysis of a series of child tiqueurs, including 91 probands and 1293 first- and second-degree relatives, 46 of whom were tiqueurs, predicts the odds on being a tiqueur for individuals, and establishes how those odds are affected by certain explanatory variables using log-linear models. The data do not confirm a familial pattern beyond re

[Keratotorus. Aetiology with regard to heredity (author's transl)].

We describe the biggest group of toric deformation of the cornea reported up to now. We point out in particular two ribs whose parents are blood-related. Hence we obtained the first evidence for an inheritance (autosomal recessive) of this corneal anomaly. The term Keratotorus is recommended as the best definition for this toric corneal deformation. Although there are similarities with other anomalies of curvature of the cornea, the clinical picture of keratotorus can be seen also in the future as a nosological entity.

Heredity and personality: A review of concepts, methods, and evidence.

Advances in genetics and genomics have transformed our understanding of personality. The observation that personality traits run in families has prompted extensive study into their heritability and underlying genetic architecture. However, there is a significant discrepancy between psychiatric classifications of personality disorders and genomic findings, suggesting a need to reorient these classifications toward a more dimensional, biologically informed perspective. This article reviews key genetic and genomic findings in personality, focusing on the "Big Five" model, which has proven consist

Heredity of hypospadias and the significance of low birth weight.

PURPOSE: We analyzed a large group of patients with hypospadias regarding familial aggregation, phenotype, twin rate and ethnic origin and a … the subjects, a third of whom were from Middle Eastern countries. CONCLUSIONS: We present data on heredity, birth weight, phenotype and ethnic origin in a large group of patients with hypospadias. The finding of additional members with hypospadias in 7% of the families supports the concept that genetic factors are involved in the pathogenesis. The strong …

[Heredity and role of serotonin in aggressive impulsive behavior].

The idea that heredity could influence behaviour, including personality is very old. Until the early 1980s, the evidence for genetic influences on personality derived almost exclusively from twin studies. More recently, studies comparing twins raised together with those raised in different environment confirmed that about 40% of the observed personality variance can be attributable to genetic factors. Since complex behaviours, such as those underlying personality functioning, are likely to be influenced by many genes, a continuum of genetic risk underlying behavioural dimensions that extend fr…

Pathology and heredity of breast cancer in younger women.

The pathology of early-age onset breast cancer is considered here from three perspectives: 1) benign proliferative disease, 2) the cancers themselves, and 3) familial and hereditary breast cancer. Hereditary breast cancer, a subset of familial breast cancer featuring a strong autosomal dominant pedigree pattern and multiple primary cancers, has a strong predilection for younger women, accounting for about one half of breast cancers under age 30. With respect to benign proliferative disease, the increased relative risk of breast cancer associated with proliferative disease with atypia, about fo

Heredity and dysmorphic syndromes in congenital limb deficiencies.

Isolated limb deficiencies are usually sporadic occurrences. However, if they are associated with other abnormalities or a family history, the risk to future pregnancies may be as high as 50%. A thorough history, examination and investigation of the baby as well as the parents is essential before assessing this recurrence risk. The syndromes associated with limb deficiencies are presented.
