Magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound of uterine fibroids: whole-tumor quantitative perfusion for prediction of immediate ablation response.

BACKGROUND: In magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) treatment of uterine fibroids, the immediate ablation response is significantly affected by blood perfusion. The variability of measurement for blood perfusion is critical due to the inherent non-uniformity of tumor perfusion and its dependence on reproducible region of interest (ROI) placement. PURPOSE: To investigate the value of whole-tumor ROI (ROIwt) analysis for quantitative perfusion in predicting immediate ablation response of uterine fibroids in MR-HIFU. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-one fibroids in

Potential enhancement of intravenous nano-hydroxyapatite in high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation for treating hepatocellular carcinoma in a rabbit model.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the safety and efficiency of an intravenously delivered nano-hydroxyapatite (Nano-HA) solution into a rabbit model (Oryctolagus cuniculus) to determine the potential enhancement of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for the ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in liver tissue. The present study clearly indicated that the intravenous delivery of large quantities of Nano-HA into the body of the rabbit model over relatively short periods of time may be absorbed by the hepatic reticuloendothelial system. Subsequent HIFU treatment for HCC, as

Prediction using T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging-based radiomics of residual uterine myoma regrowth after high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based radiomics models for predicting residual myoma regrowth within 1 year after high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of uterine myomas. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of residual myoma regrowth within 1 year was performed on 428 myomas in 339 patients who were diagnosed with uterine myoma and treated with HIFU ablation in two hospital centers. In total, 851 radiomics features were extracted from T2-weighted images (T2WI) obtained 1 day after HIFU ablation, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection oper

Alterations in Immune Response Profile of Tumor-Draining Lymph Nodes after High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation of Breast Cancer Patients.

Previous studies have revealed that high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation can trigger an antitumor immune response. The aim of this study was to investigate immune response in tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLNs) after HIFU treatment. Forty-eight female patients with biopsy-confirmed breast cancer were divided into a control group and an HIFU group. In the control group, 25 patients underwent modified radical mastectomy, but 23 patients in the HIFU group received HIFU ablation of primary cancer, followed by the same operation. Using HE and immunohistochemical staining, the immunologi

High intensity focused ultrasound ablation of goat liver in vivo: Pathologic changes of portal vein and the "heat-sink" effect.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate pathological changes of the portal vein (PV) and the effects on main branches of the hepatic PV during HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) sonication when liver tissue adjacent to the main branches of hepatic PV was ablated. Normal liver tissue at 0mm, 5mm, 10mm away from the hepatic portal vein in 50 healthy goats was ablated with magnetic resonance image-guided HIFU (MRgHIFU). MRI showed a non-perfusion region at the target area but did not show any significant changes of the PV immediately after HIFU. The histological examination 1 day after HI

Ablation of symptomatic uterine fibroids with the Mirabilis system for rapid noninvasive ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU): a prospective observational clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: Uterine fibroids often lead to symptoms that negatively impact health-related quality of life (HRQOL). High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has emerged as a promising noninvasive treatment for reducing fibroid size and symptoms. The Mirabilis system for ultrasound (US)-guided HIFU introduces a novel technique known as 'shell ablation'. This study evaluates the feasibility and efficacy of Mirabilis in a clinical setting, focusing on clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with 23 uterine fibroids were treated with the Mirabilis system. Follow-up assessments i

PURPOSE: To determine efficacy and safety of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of uterine fibroids (UFs). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed women undergoing HIFU ablation for UFs between June 2018 and January 2020. pH-sensitive pullulan-doxorubicin nanoparticles loaded with 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane as a novel synergist for high intensity focused ultrasound mediated tumor ablation.

Nanoemulsions as synergists of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) have been widely investigated, since they possess huge potential for improving the efficiency to ablate tumor. However, their clinical applications are limited due to the unsatisfactory phase-transition effect of nanoemulsions during the process of generating nanobubbles. Herein, a novel synergist for HIFU therapy was designed by encapsulating 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFC) into pH-sensitive pullulan-doxorubicin (Pu-DOX/CFC) nanoparticles. These Pu-DOX/CFC nanoemulsions, with moderate vaporization temperature thresho

Impact of Valsalva maneuver duration on brain function in patients undergoing high-intensity focused ultrasound liver ablation: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent Valsalva maneuver (VM) is commonly used to facilitate high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation. However, the optimal duration of a VM in terms of adverse impacts on brain function is unknown. This prospective study explored the impact of different VM durations on brain function in patients undergoing HIFU ablation surgery for hepatic cancer. METHODS: Adult patients scheduled for HIFU ablation for liver cancer under general anesthesia were randomized into a control group, ≤5.2 min per VM episode (short VM group), or >5.2 min per VM episode (long VM group).
