The eosinophilic granuloma of bone is the most common type of histiocytic disorder involving the orbital area. Imaging data typically show bony defects with an intra-orbital soft-tissue extension. Surgical debulking is most often required. Rosai-Dorfman disease is commonly associated with uni- or bilateral orbital locations. The other histiocytic disorders are very rare, but some have a poor prognosis such as Erdheim-Chester disease.

This article reviews the features of dendritic cells (DCs) of myeloid-derived, plasmacytoid, and follicle-associated types and tumors of these cells, as well as myeloid sarcoma. A 12-year-old Persian cat was examined for a firm swelling of the right tarsal region and enlargement of the corresponding right popliteal lymph node. Cytologic evaluation demonstrated a population of malignant cells consistent with large cell lymphoma. Necropsy revealed a multi-lobulated subcutaneous mass involving the tarsus with some extension into adjacent deep muscular tissue. Histologically, the mass was composed of round cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and pleomorphic anisokaryotic nuclei. Evidence of articular and nodal infiltration by these cells was observed. OBJECTIVE: To assess prevalence, breed predilection, response to therapy and prognosis of canine histiocytic ulcerative colitis (CHUC).
DESIGN: A retrospective study of cases of CHUC seen at Sydney University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (SUVTH) over a 20-year period (1975-1994).
PROCEDURE: Case records of all dogs in which colitis was suspected were reviewed. Dogs were diagnosed with CHUC based on colonorectal biopsy and histopathological examination.

The disease most likely to be associated with large numbers of bone marrow storage histiocytes is Gaucher's disease. In our community of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and West Virginia, we have encountered 30 patients with Gaucher's disease during the past 25 years. CT-scan findings of the brain in two children with true histiocytic sarcoma are described as well as their changes during therapy. Clinical features and differential diagnosis on CT-scan examination are discussed. Follow-up CT-scan during therapy is of value as an indicator of the response to therapy and possibly the long term prognosis.

The signs, symptoms, and bone marrow findings of the recently described virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome was seen in a patient we treated. The manifestations of this syndrome may not be specific to viral infections and may possibly occur in other infectious processes. Autopsy findings in the present case showed it to be associated with disseminated miliary tuberculosis. Concomitant viral infection was excluded. To our knowledge, only one similar patient has previously been described.

Forty-one cases of childhood "histiocytic" lymphoma were studied morphologically and immunologically to determine whether this tumor type is composed of true histiocytic cells. Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) and hemangiosarcoma (HSA) are uncommon and aggressive neoplasms that develop much more frequently in dogs than in cats. Breed-specific predispositions have been identified for both cancers. The development of novel diagnostics is underway and may aid in earlier diagnosis.
