We detected Histoplasma capsulatum in soil and penguin excreta in the Antarctic Peninsula by sequencing after performing species-specific PCR, confirming previous observations that this pathogen occurs more broadly than suspected. This finding highlights the need for surveillance of emerging agents of systemic mycoses and their transmission among regions, animals, and humans in Antarctica.

In the last eleven months, we have diagnosed 9 cases of Histoplasmosis in our country. All patients affected were from endemic areas of South-America. Here, we wish to inform and prevent to all clinical laboratories from Chile about the presence of Histoplasma capsulatum in clinical samples. In the same way we want to prepare and raising awareness of the strengthening of biosecurity measures.

In a survey of 296 sylvatic animals captured from virgin forests in the north-eastern and south-western Amazon of Brazil, Histoplasma capsulatum was isolated, via the indirect hamster inoculation method, from the liver and spleen of four common opossums Didelphis marsupialis and two pacas Agouti paca. Thrombocytopenia is a common accompaniment of disseminated histoplasmosis. The yeast form of Histoplasma capsulatum does not directly injure human platelets freed of plasma. Preincubation of H. capsulatum with plasma enabled it to induce prompt platelet aggregation and selective release of [3H]serotonin without release of lysosomal beta-glucuronidase and the cytoplasmic marker, lactate dehydrogenase. The highly variable mycelial phase cultures of Histoplasma capsulatum are generally described as brown to albino colonies with the albino type overtaking the brown in a unidirectional and mainly irreversible process.
