Characterization of adult patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome during the arboviral infection outbreaks in Honduras.

Arbovirus infections have been associated with a wide spectrum of neurological manifestations. Among these, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is one of the most common. This study describes the characteristics of GBS associated with arbovirus infections during the outbreak which occurred in Honduras from January 2016 to February 2019. This was an observational retrospective study of adult patients who were diagnosed with GBS during that time. The diagnosis of GBS was based upon the criteria first published by Asbury, et al. and subsequently revised as the Brighton Criteria. A total of 91 patients …

Genomic surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax cases at the University Hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Malaria continues to be an important health problem in Honduras despite major progress achieved reducing its incidence in the last two decades. In a context of case reduction, continuing surveillance of parasite diversity and drug resistance is an important component to assist effective malaria control strategies and support risk assessments. In this study, we employed next generation sequencing on collected Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum samples from the Hospital Escuela (University Hospital) in Honduras between 2005 and 2017. Hospital Escuela is the main public health hospital in Hondura…

Poverty-associated risk factors for wheezing in the first year of life in Honduras and El Salvador.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for wheezing specifically during the first year of life have been studied in well-developed countries, but the information from developing countries is very scarce. There are no such studies focusing on factors derived from poverty. The aim of the present study was to determine if risk factors related to poverty are associated to wheezing during the first year of life in infants from Honduras and El Salvador. METHODS: A survey, using a validated questionnaire, was carried out in the metropolitan area of San Pedro Sula (Honduras) and in La Libertad (El Salvador) in cen…

From brain drain to brain circulation: evidence from women scientists in OWSD Honduras National Chapter.

INTRODUCTION: Honduras invests minimally in research and development (0.06% of GDP), contributing to highly qualified professional emigration. When individuals migrate, they may return to Honduras or become part of the scientific diaspora. The exchange of knowledge between professionals abroad and those in their country of origin constitutes "brain circulation", a process with significant potential to support scientific ecosystems in contexts of low research and development investment. This study examined how the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Honduras Nation…

Cohort study of human infection by Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi in southern Honduras, Central America.

BACKGROUND: In Honduras, Central America, human infection with Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi can lead to the clinical manifestation known as non-ulcerated cutaneous leishmaniasis (NUCL) and visceral leishmaniasis. This study evaluates the dynamics of human infection with L. (L.) infantum chagasi, focusing on the NUCL form, atypical and rare clinical form of disease. METHODS: A cohort of 576 individuals from Amapala, southern Honduras, was followed for 2 y with clinical, parasitological and immunological tests: ELISA-IgG/IgM and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) tests were conducted at 12…

Severe neonatal dengue with confirmed vertical transmission of DENV-3: A fatal case from Honduras.

Dengue virus (DENV) infection is a major public health concern, with an estimated 390 million infections annually. Although typically self-limiting, dengue can progress to severe, life-threatening complications in high-risk groups such as neonates. Vertical transmission has been reported in up to 22.7 % of pregnancies complicated by maternal dengue. We report a fatal case of severe neonatal dengue due to DENV-3, confirmed by RT-PCR in both mother and infant. The neonate, born at 38 weeks of gestation via cesarean section to a mother with severe dengue and preeclampsia with severe features, com

Clinical and Immunological Features of Human Leishmania (L.) infantum-Infection, Novel Insights Honduras, Central America.

Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum is the etiological agent of both American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) and non-ulcerated cutaneous leishmaniasis (NUCL) in Honduras. Although AVL is the most severe clinical form of infection, recent studies have shown that human immune response to parasite infection can result in a clinical-immunological spectrum. The overall prevalence rate of infection and clinical-immunological profiles of the L. (L.) infantum infection in Amapala municipality, South Honduras was determined. We examined 576 individuals with diagnosis based on combined ELISA (IgG/IgM) and DT…

Leishmania chagasi: genotypically similar parasites from Honduras cause both visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in humans.

In the Mediterranean region Leishmania infantum causes both visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. These two pathologies tend to be caused by distinct parasite zymodemes. We have studied 33 isolates of Leishmania, 2 from sandflies, 5 from visceral cases, and 26 from cutaneous cases in Honduras, to determine if there is a correlation between pathology and parasite type in the New World similar to that in the Mediterranean region. Nine of the 26 cutaneous cases were caused by L. mexicana parasites, which have not been previously reported from Honduras; the remaining 17 cutaneous cases were due to…

Post-Coronavirus Disease Condition among Nonhospitalized Patients in Honduras: A Prospective Cohort Study: 2022-2023.

To characterize the burden of and identify risk factors for post-coronavirus disease (COVID) condition among high-risk, nonhospitalized patients in Honduras, patients with acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who were discharged from five urban triage facilities were prospectively recruited. These patients were recruited between May and September 2022. Inclusion criteria included a positive COVID-19 antigen test result and either age greater than 60 years or age greater than 45 years with elevated risk for severe COVID-19. Follow-up was conducted at 3 and 4.5 months by telephone. Multivar…

Distal Ileitis Caused by Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma in an Elderly Patient From Honduras.

Primary gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin lymphoma, while rare, most often presents as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma located in the stomach or ileocecal region. Presenting symptoms include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, weight loss, or obstructive symptoms. Imaging can reveal ileitis or obstruction. We report a case of a man from Honduras with latent tuberculosis and chronic hepatitis B who presented with features of Crohn's disease through clinical, radiologic, and endoscopic findings but was ultimately diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma by histology. We emphasize the importa…

Human papillomavirus infection, cervical dysplasia and invasive cervical cancer in Honduras: a case-control study.

A substantial body of evidence has confirmed human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as the central etiological agent in human cervical carcinogenesis. In Honduras, cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women, with a high annual incidence. We conducted a population-based, case-control study of 229 patients with different grades of CIN and invasive cervical cancer and 438 matched controls. A structured questionnaire was used to investigate known and probable risk factors for cervical cancer. Cervical scrapes were tested for the presence of different HPV types using a general primer-media…

Coffee farmers willingness to accept payments for ecosystem services: Evidence from a choice experiment in Honduras.

Coffee production in Central America provides a valuable yet volatile source of income for hundreds of thousands of small-scale farmers and … nitiatives. To fill this gap, we use a discrete choice experiment administered to coffee farmers in Honduras to understand farmers' willingness to conserve natural forest on farmlands in exchange for higher coffee prices and payments from carbon credits. Results suggest that payments for ecosystem services are a viable option for improving the sustainabili …

First evidence of the mutations associated with pyrethroid resistance in head lice (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) from Honduras.

BACKGROUND: The human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, is a cosmopolitan blood-sucking ectoparasite affecting mostly schoolchildren in both developed and developing countries. In Honduras, chemical pediculicides are the first line of treatment, with permethrin as their main active ingredient. Despite the extended use of these products, there is currently no research investigating insecticide resistance in Honduran head lice. In head lice, the most common mechanism is knockdown resistance (kdr), which is the result of two point mutations and the associated amino acid substitutions, T917I …

Head lice infestations in rural Honduras: the need for an integrated approach to control neglected tropical diseases.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis capitis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that receives little attention in countries where it continues to be endemic. This study aimed to understand the impact of Pediculus humanus capitis infestations in the lives of Honduran children living in extreme poverty. METHODS: A qualitative study on head lice infestation was conducted in June 2016 in a rural community in Honduras. Parents were invited to bring their children for head lice inspection using a dry-combing technique with a stainless steel-toothed comb with suction power. A semistructured questionnaire was …

Nutritional status of children under 5 years of age in three hurricane-affected areas of Honduras.

Hurricanes and other natural disasters can produce crop destruction, population displacement, infrastructure damage, and long-term public health consequences that include increased malnutrition among the affected populations. This paper presents the results of anthropometric measurements taken of 295 children under 5 years of age from three regions of Honduras that were affected by Hurricane Mitch, a major storm that struck Central America in the fall of 1998. The children in our study were sampled in three shelters in the capital city of Tegucigalpa; in the resettlement zone of Nueva Cholutec…
