OBJECTIVE: To document the distribution of human hookworm infection in Australia.
DESIGN: A retrospective study of published data and accessible archival records.
METHODS: The core data were derived from the report of the Australian Hookworm Campaign, annual reports of various State health departments and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, and unpublished files of the former Queensland Aboriginal Health Programme.
FINDINGS: Today, hookworm infection is endemic only among Aboriginal communities of northern Western Australia and the Northern Territory, where Ancylostoma duodenale m

Human hookworm, a soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection caused by either Necator americanus or Anclystoma duodenale, is a major cause of morbidity globally and predominantly affects the world's poorest populations. Transmitted primarily by larval invasion of exposed skin, the adults inhabit the host small intestine, where they consume host blood. The resultant chronic iron deficiency anemia can lead to stunted growth and cognitive deficits in children, reduced work capacity in adults, and a variety of pregnancy complications. Historically, successful STH elimination has only been achieved

Obesity and ancylostomiasis are considered public health problems. Recent studies have shown that infection by intestinal helminths in obese individuals can ameliorate metabolic disorder and improve glucose tolerance by decreasing both insulin resistance and low-intensity inflammation. However, few helminth species have been studied in this context, and some modulation mechanisms still require deeper investigation. Therefore, the present work aimed to investigate the role of experimental infection with Ancylostoma ceylanicum in the modulation of the immune response in an obese experimental mod

Human hookworm infection is one amongst the most prevalent of the neglected tropical diseases. Natural hookworm infections usually occur in areas where hookworm transmission is constant and infection is chronic. In cases where there has been drug administration in an endemic area, re-infection often occurs quickly even amongst those who were treated. Hence, although man …

Hookworms are bloodfeeding nematodes that reside in the intestinal mucosa. These parasites secrete proteins that induce robust systemic immune responses in humans and experimental animals. By contrast, mucosal immune responses in and around the site of attachment are not described as well. This paper presents data from studies aimed at examining hookworm-specific mucosal antibody responses in a hamster model of Ancylostoma ceylanicum infection. Intestinal flush prepared from infected hamsters was analysed by ELISA and shown to be enriched in IgA-specific for A. ceylanicum excretory-secretory (

Since the 1990s, the major approach to hookworm control has been morbidity reduction in school-aged children by periodic deworming with benzimidazoles. Now, efforts are underway to determine the feasibility of integrating deworming with control programs that target other neglected tropical diseases. However, the sustainability of benzimidazole deworming for hookworm is of concern because of the variable efficacy of mebendazole, high rates of post-treatment reinfection and possible development of drug resistance. This requires parallel efforts to develop new and complementary hookworm control t

Fujian province has been known to be endemic for mixed hookworm infection with Ancylostoma duodenale as the predominant species. The infection rate was 50% before 1980. As a result of mass treatment starting from 1980, the infection rate was decreased in most areas. And, infection foci were changed from sweet potato fields to the banana, sweatcane and asparagus fields where the infection rate tended to increase. It is stressed that the current endemic characteristics of hookworm infection should be paid more attention in implementing the control programme of hookworm infection.

From 1984-1987, mass application of mebendazole-medicated salt was studied for the control of hookworm infection in 5 pilot areas (Wuming, Shanlin, Bobai, Guilin and Rongxian Counties) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The dosages of mebendazole (mixed with salt) administered were 15mg, 25mg, 30mg, 40mg, 50mg, 30mg, 70mg, 80mg, 100mg or 200mg per person per day for 15, 20 or 30 days. The results showed that 40mg/day for 15-20 days could result in stool egg negative conversion rates of 92.3 to 94.4%, while 50mg/day for 30 days resulted in 96.9 to 100%. Concurrently, the hookworm infection ra
