During a 36-month period, seven cases of Horner's syndrome were encountered in a general pediatric hospital. The most common site of involvement was the ipsilateral sympathetic chain, although multiple sites were involved. Several causes of Horner's syndrome in childhood that have received little previous attention are reported-internal carotid artery thrombosis, subclavian artery aneurysm, and nasopharyngeal tumor. Suggestions for routine evaluation are given. Angiography and x-rays of the temporal and sphenoid bones are valuable in the diagnosis of intracranial lesions causing Horner's syndr

A 1-year-old boy presented with a 4-month history of hypertension, ptosis of the right upper eyelid, left hemifacial sweating, and flushing. He was diagnosed with Harlequin syndrome associated with Horner syndrome. Computed tomography revealed a mass lesion in the right superior mediastinum. Therefore, the patient underwent total tumor resection. Histological examination demonstrated ganglioneuroblastoma. The MYCN oncogene was not amplified, and the mitosis-karyorrhexis index was low. Accordingly, radiation and chemotherapy were not performed. No recurrence was observed within 8 months after s…

Ten patients with functional transection of the lower cervical cord were noted to develop a transient, occasionally alternate Horner syndrome. The ocular signs were rarely complete, eyelid droop being the most constant and prominent symptom. Signs could be elicited by turning the patients from side to side. They disappeared gradually with patients lying recumbent or supine. Cocaine and Adrenalin in the presently used concentration are not useful in diagnosis, but cocaine may possibly be used to "bring out" a "latent Horner's syndrome." The appearance of eye symptoms is delayed from 2 months to…

Horner syndrome is a rare condition caused by a lesion of the sympathetic cervical chain. Multiple cervical disorders are associated with such lesions. Here we report the first case of Horner syndrome after cervical facet joint corticosteroid injection.

Idiopathic Horner Syndrome Diagnosed Remotely using Telemedicine. The novel Coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), pandemic has altered the field of ophthalmology in myriad ways. During the initial lockdown period in March, the use of telemedicine expanded to adhere to public health guidelines. The field of neuro-ophthalmology is an ophthalmic sub-specialty less prone to the use of telemedicine. We present a case of isolated idiopathic Horner syndrome in a 39 year old female diagnosed through telemedicine.

INTRODUCTION: Horner syndrome is described as the clinical triad of miosis, ptosis, and anhidrosis. In pediatric patients the condition may be congenital or acquired from neoplastic, infectious or traumatic conditions, including birth trauma. Most cases of pediatric Horner syndrome present first to a pediatric ophthalmologist however since the neural pathways involve the cervical sympathetic chain otolaryngologists should understand the pathophysiology to avoid delay in management of potentially malignant cases.
OBJECTIVES: To aid otolaryngologists in recognizing and managing pediatric Horner…

Horner syndrome is rarely observed in connection with epidural anesthesia. It is characterized by ptosis, enophthalmos, miosis, anisocoria, and conjunctival hyperemia in the affected eye, as well as anhydrosis and flushing on the affected side of the face. It is usually a complication spontaneously resolved without permanent neurological deficits. Intraoral anesthesia; stellate ganglion, cervical or brachial plexus blocks; thoracic, lumbar or caudal epidural anesthesia, and intrapleural analgesia are the main causes for Horner syndrome related to anesthesia. Among other causes of Horner syndro…

OBJECTIVE: To define the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of a single centre's approach to evaluating Horner syndrome (HS) including a simplified single neuroimaging protocol.
DESIGN: Case series study.
PARTICIPANTS: Medical records of 34 patients diagnosed with HS at Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH) were reviewed after obtaining Institutional Review Board approval.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all patients presenting with the diagnosis of HS at the HMH from January 2010 to November 2013. All patients had diagnostic imaging with contrast-enhanced brain mag…

Intermittent Horner syndrome is uncommon in both the adult and pediatric population. We describe a case of a pediatric patient with an intermittent Horner syndrome. Infrared photography and videography were used to help establish the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Horner syndrome after tonsillectomy has been reported rarely in the literature. Furthermore, postoperative Horner syndrome lasting more than a 1 month is an even more rare occurrence.
PATIENT: We present a persistent postoperative Horner syndrome in a 5-year-old child following tonsillectomy.
RESULTS: Clinical diagnosis of Horner syndrome is confirmed pharmacologically, and damage to the oculosympathetic pathway at the level of the superior cervical ganglion is radiographically demonstrated.
CONCLUSION: Conventional monopolar electrosurgical dissection led to irreversible damage…

The author reports a rare case of Horner syndrome in a patient who resulted from stenosis of the vertebral artery after blunt trauma. A 31-year-old man was transferred to our department for evaluation of left medial orbital wall and nasal bone fractures. Five days ago, he was hospitalized due to multiple second to fourth rib fractures of the right chest following blunt trauma of the face, neck, and chest. Surgery was performed. Ten days later, he complained of drooping of the right eyelid. Physical examination revealed a discrete miosis and ptosis with normal levator function in the right eye.…
