Pregnancy-associated takotsubo cardiomyopathy hospitalizations in the United States.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is most common not only in postmenopausal women aged ≥50 yr but also in pregnant individuals. However, there are no national estimates on the prevalence, timing of occurrence, correlates, and outcomes of pregnancy-associated TCM. Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS: 2016-2020), we describe rates of pregnancy-associated TCM hospitalizations among 13- to 49-yr-old pregnant individuals in the United States by selected demographic, behavioral, hospital, and clinical characteristics. Joinpoint regression was used to describe the annual average percent change of

Cardiovascular manifestations in hospitalized patients with hemochromatosis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Heart complications are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in hemochromatosis, but the liver is the main site for iron deposition in these patients. Large multicenter studies have described cardiovascular (CV) manifestations in patients with secondary hemochromatosis. However, the overall prevalence and risk of CV manifestations in patients with hemochromatosis at the population level are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and risk of CV manifestations in patients with hemochromatosis. METHODS: A retrospective cohort from the National Inpatient Sample database b

Trends in Transient Ischemic Attack Hospitalizations in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a major predictor of subsequent stroke. No study has assessed nation-wide trends in hospitalization for TIA in the United States. METHODS AND RESULTS: Temporal trends in hospitalization for TIA (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision code 435.0-435.9) from 2000 to 2010 were assessed among adults aged ≥25 years using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. Age-, sex-, and race/ethnic-specific TIA hospitalization rates were calculated using the weighted number of hospitalizations as the numerator and the US population as the denominator.

Sporotrichosis-Associated Hospitalizations, United States, 2000-2013.

To determine frequency and risk for sporotrichosis-associated hospitalizations, we analyzed the US 2000-2013 National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample. An estimated 1,471 hospitalizations occurred (average annual rate 0.35/1 million persons). Hospitalizations were associated with HIV/AIDS, immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Although rare, severe sporotrichosis should be considered for at-risk patients.

Review of meningococcal infection in children at a United Kingdom hospital.

Sixty-nine children were identified and evaluable. Forty-one (60%) presented with hypotension and/or abnormal neurological signs. In 34 (49%) a petechial rash was present on admission. Of note, 13 (19%) had a non-petechial rash, and rash was absent in 19 (28%). Twenty-one (30%) presented with meningism or meningitis. In one child the illness was so mild that the child was discharged prior to making a diagnosis. Five children died (7%). Sixty-three cases (91%) were diagnosed by blood or cerebrospinal fluid culture; these investigations remain the mainstay of diagnosis.

Sickle cell hospital unit: a disease-specific model.

American urban hospitals often serve large populations of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Those hospitals that choose to implement an adult SCD-specific inpatient unit have the opportunity to acquire multiple operational benefits. Such units may ultimately reduce patient morbidity and mortality; improve timely access to quality medical care in a cost-effective manner; reduce overcrowding in the emergency department; and increase patient, family, physician, and payer satisfaction. SCD is a serious, painful, genetic blood disorder that affects a growing population of adults in the United Sta

Antipsychotic polypharmacy in patients with schizophrenia in a brief hospitalization unit.

INTRODUCTION: Antipsychotic monotherapy is considered the gold standard in pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Only 2 of the main clinical guides recommend the use of antipsychotic polypharmacy (AP) for those patients refractory to monotherapy. Nonetheless, there is a large rate of studies, conducted in many different settings, showing that AP is more frequent as would be expected attending experts' recommendations. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we review all the psychotropic drugs dispensed to inpatients of a brief hospitalization psychiatric uni
