Prevalence and related factors of do-not-resuscitate orders among in-hospital cardiac arrest patients.

PURPOSE: Studies concerning do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders in mainland China are rather scarce. We explored the prevalence and related factors of DNR orders among in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) patients at a general tertiary hospital in mainland China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all IHCA patients hospital-wide between July 2019 and September 2020. Data regarding DNR status were collected from medical records. We investigated the frequency of DNR orders and explored the determinant factors of DNR establishment using logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 1154 IHCA patients wer

Hospital Design with Nature Films Reduces Stress-Related Variables in Patients Undergoing Colonoscopy.

PURPOSE: To examine whether patients' experiences could be improved during colonoscopy by designing the examination room to include a digital screen showing calm nature films. BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is the gold standard for examination of the large intestine and the rectum. Around 50% of individuals invited for colorectal cancer screening choose to refrain from the screening due to fear and anxiety. It is therefore important to improve patients' comfort during the procedure. METHOD: One of the four endoscopy rooms was rebuilt to include a large digital screen showing calm nature films. Pati

A six-year review of patients admitted to hospital with injuries related to quad bike use.

AIM: To describe quad bike injury-related hospitalisations in the Midland region over a six-year period. METHOD: A retrospective review of anonymised, prospectively-collected trauma registry data from 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2018 was undertaken. Cases include patients hospitalised with quad bike-related injuries. Non-major injuries are included to provide a clearer picture of the trauma burden. RESULTS: Three hundred and forty-six injuries resulted in hospitalisation with 70.2% of events occurring on a farm. Males outnumbered females 3.7:1. Forty-six children (<16 years) were hospitalised, of

Identifying skeletal-related events for prostate cancer patients in routinely collected hospital data.

BACKGROUND: Non-osteoporotic skeletal-related events (SREs) are clinically important markers of disease progression in prostate cancer. We developed and validated an approach to identify SREs in men with prostate cancer using routinely-collected data. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with prostate cancer between January 2010 and December 2013 were identified in the National Prostate Cancer Audit, based on English cancer registry data. A coding framework was developed based on diagnostic and procedure codes in linked national administrative hospital and routinely-collected radiotherapy data to iden

Defining Aging Phenotypes and Related Outcomes: Clues to Recognize Frailty in Hospitalized Older Patients.

BACKGROUND: Because frailty is a complex phenomenon associated with poor outcomes, the identification of patient profiles with different care needs might be of greater practical help than to look for a unifying definition. This study aimed at identifying aging phenotypes and their related outcomes in order to recognize frailty in hospitalized older patients. METHODS: Patients aged 65 or older enrolled in internal medicine and geriatric wards participating in the REPOSI registry. Relationships among variables associated to sociodemographic, physical, cognitive, functional, and medical status w

Gender-related differences in patients with acute heart failure: management and predictors of in-hospital mortality.

AIM AND METHODS: Gender-related differences in clinical phenotype, in-hospital management and prognosis of acute heart failure (AHF) patients have been previously reported in European and US registries. The ALARM-HF survey is the first to include a cohort of 4953 patients hospitalized for AHF in 666 hospitals in 6 European countries, Mexico and Australia. RESULTS: Women accounted for 37% of the study population, were older and had higher rates of de novo heart failure (45% vs 36%, p<0.001) than men. An acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was the predominant precipitating factor in both genders, but

Demographical and clinical aspects of sports-related maxillofacial and skull base fractures in hospitalized patients.

As many as 30% of all maxillofacial fractures (MFFs) and skull base fractures (SBFs) are reported to be sports-related. Participation in sporting activities has grown worldwide and the number of cases of sports-related injuries has also increased. The aim of this study was to evaluate the data of 3596 patients hospitalized by MFF or SBF over a 6-year period; 147 (4%) of these cases were sports-related (mean age 29.7±12.8 years). The highest incidence was found in patients aged 20-29 years (35%), and the fractures resulted mostly from ball sports (74%), especially soccer (59%) and handball (8%)

In-patient care for symptomatic, HIV-infected persons: a longitudinal study of hospitalizations, in-patient drug use, and related costs.

Patterns in the costs of hospital in-patient care and in-patient drug treatment of 121 symptomatic, HIV-infected patients are described for a university hospital between 1987 and 1991. Trend analyses have been performed on quarterly and yearly data using parametric and non-parametric statistical techniques. During the 5-year study period the demand for hospital beds almost quadrupled despite a constant number of admissions per person-year and a 40% decrease in the average length of stay. The demand for beds was highest in the autumn and winter months. The impact of female and/or heterosexual s
