Perceptions About Housing and Neighborhood Characteristics Among Aging Adult Black Americans in Two Predominantly Black, Low-Income Neighborhoods in Pittsburgh: A Multi-Method Analysis.

The life expectancy gap between Black and White Americans has narrowed, but progress remains slow due to the persistent consequences of life … their landlords and building managers. Buildings' social environment was an important dimension of housing quality among renters-behavioral and value differences between older and younger tenants caused frustration. Survey respondents were mostly (73%) satisfied with their neighborhoods' livability. Good access to transportation and community spaces were seen as …

Food insecurity and housing instability as determinants of cardiovascular health outcomes: A systematic review.

AIMS: The primary objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review of existing literature on the association between food insecurity and housing instability with CVD and its subtypes-related outcomes. Summarizing the comprehensive evidence for independent/interchangeable relationship of food and housing instability with CVD outcomes may inform specific interventions strategies to reduce CVD-risk. DATA SYNTHESIS: The search focused on English-language articles in PubMed/Medline, from January 1, 2010, to June 1, 2021, with restriction to the US adult population. We included studies est

The residential context of health in Australia: No longer the lucky country?

This paper introduces the special issue focused on the relationship between residence and health in Australia. We present six papers conducted in different Australian states that demonstrate different elements of the complex impact of residential context on health. Through this series of papers, we demonstrate the impact of housing quality and safety on vulnerable populations, but also the way in which processes around housing (e.g., data collection, renewal, allocation) can have either negative or positive outcomes. The broader residential context (i.e., neighborhood, community, geographic lo…

The effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions on ending family homelessness: a systematic review.

Family homelessness has become a growing public health problem over the last 3 decades. Despite this trend, few studies have explored the effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions. The purpose of this systematic review is to appraise and synthesize evidence on effective interventions addressing family homelessness. We searched 10 major electronic databases from 2007 to 2013. Empirical studies investigating effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions for American homeless families regardless of publication status were eligible

The Affordable Rental Housing Crisis and Population Health Equity: a Multidimensional and Multilevel Framework.

The US is facing a severe affordable rental housing crisis that contributes to multiple forms of housing insecurity including homelessness, crowded and poor quality housing conditions, unstable housing arrangements, and cost burdens. A considerable body of evidence finds that housing insecurity is an important determinant of health. However, the existing literature may fall short of conceptualizing and measuring the full impact of housing insecurity on population health and on racial health equity. In this paper, we seek to expand the conceptualization of housing as a determinant of population

Leishmaniasis sand fly vector density reduction is less marked in destitute housing after insecticide thermal fogging.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide thermal fogging (ITF) is a tool to control vector borne diseases. Insecticide application success for vector control has been associated with housing materials and architecture. Vector abundance is correlated with weather changes. Nevertheless, housing quality and weather impacts on vector abundance have been unaccounted for in most New World insecticide control trials for leishmaniasis vectors. METHODS: We conducted a 15 month insecticide control trial that included two deltamethrin [6 mg a.i.m-2] based ITF interventions in 12 of 24 monitored houses at Trinidad de Las…

Housing Satisfaction of Psychiatric Patients in Different Forms of Housing-A Cross-Sectional Study in Berlin, Germany.

The growing social problem of homelessness and precarious housing situations has negative effects on psychological outcomes and quality of life (QoL) for mentally ill people. Despite a large body of research on QoL among homeless mentally ill people, research on housing satisfaction as a specific QoL domain and important outcome variable for treatment interventions is scarce. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to investigate housing satisfaction among psychiatric patients in various housing situations. Out of 1,251 patients that were treated in the targeted facilities during the admi

Housing circumstances are associated with household food access among low-income urban families.

Household food insecurity is a pervasive problem in North America with serious health consequences. While affordable housing has been cited … food insecurity. Rent arrears were also positively associated with food insecurity. Compromises in housing quality were evident, perhaps reflecting the impact of financial constraints on multiple basic needs as well as conscious efforts to contain housing costs to free up resources for food and other needs. Our findings raise questions about current housing affo …

Health and social outcomes in the Housing First model: Testing the theory of change.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness continues to grow globally. The Housing First (HF) model offers immediate access to housing and support services without preconditions and has a growing body of evidence documenting its effectiveness at ending homelessness. HF has a robust theory of change that hypothesizes how unique program components (i.e., immediate access to housing, separation of services from housing, client choice, etc.) drive positive social and health changes over time. We advance the understanding of how HF causes client improvement by empirically testing this program's theory of change. ME

Housing interventions for women experiencing intimate partner violence: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the leading cause of women's homelessness. However, what works best to respond to the needs of women experiencing IPV and homelessness remains unclear. We aimed to systematically review the effects of housing interventions on the physical, psychosocial, and economic wellbeing of women experiencing IPV. METHODS: In this systematic review, we searched 15 electronic databases and conducted an extensive grey literature and hand reference search between Jan 29, 2020, and May 31, 2021. We included controlled quantitative studies of housing intervention

[Evidence-based treatment of mentally ill homeless persons].

A systematic review of the literature shows that it is possible to reduce homelessness among mentally ill homeless persons, partly by offering access to housing and partly by providing intensive care through Assertive Community Treatment. Assertive Community Treatment can, to some extent, decrease psychiatric symptoms and increase quality of life. It is evident that by offering housing, homelessness may be reduced, but the comparison of independent housing and group living did not reveal big differences.

Balance Between Daily Water Renewal and Nitrate Levels in a Recirculating Zebrafish Housing System.

In zebrafish housing systems with water recirculation, a daily renewal of at least 10% of the total water volume is generally recommended to preserve optimal water quality. Such aquatic housing systems often rely on reverse osmosis (RO) water. RO production uses large amounts of running water, a high proportion of which is then discharged into waste. A key parameter for water quality control is nitrate, the final transformation product of the nitrogen cycle in water. Here, we used this parameter to test whether daily water renewal could be reduced in our zebrafish housing system without impact

Evaluation of a Housing First programme for people from the public mental health sector with severe and persistent mental illnesses and precarious housing: Housing, health and service use outcomes.

AIMS AND CONTEXT: This paper reports the evaluation of the Doorway program (2015-18) in Melbourne, Australia. Doorway extends the original Housing First (HF) model in providing housing support to people with precarious housing at-risk of homelessness with Serious and Persistent Mental Illnesses (SPMIs) receiving care within Victoria's public mental health system. Doorway participants source and choose properties through the open rental market, and receive rental subsidies, assistance, advocacy and brokerage support through their Housing and Recovery Worker (HRW). The aim of this study is to es

Perceptions of Housing and Shelter among People with Histories of Unstable Housing in three Cities in Canada: A Qualitative Study.

Housing is a key social determinant of health that contributes to the well-documented relationship between socioeconomic status and health. This study explored how individuals with histories of unstable and precarious housing perceive their housing or shelter situations, and the impact of these settings on their health and well-being. Participants were recruited from the Health and Housing in Transition study (HHiT), a longitudinal, multi-city study that tracked the health and housing status of people with unstable housing histories over a 5-year period. For the current study, one-time semi-st

Inadequate Social Housing and Health: The Case of Oliver Bond House, The Liberties, Dublin.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate housing is an important social justice issue that adversely affects health. METHODS: Drawing on an extended ethnography case study, this paper presents the results of a resident-led survey to highlight the health consequences of inadequate social housing, as residents wait for a 'fair regeneration' of their social housing 'flats' estate within a gentrifying inner-city Dublin neighbourhood. RESULTS: Four key concerns were identified by residents as part of this analysis: (1) substandard housing conditions which are physically harmful to health; (2) the emotional toll of
