The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a pandemic threatens the entire world resulting in severe consequences for people's health. Pregnant patients with COVID-19 had immune dysregulation that could result in abnormal pregnancy outcomes such as hydatidiform mole (HM), recurrent pregnancy loss, and early-onset preeclampsia. In this article, we tried to summarize the possible association between COVID-19 and the HM's development by reviewing the role of NOD-Like Receptor (NLR) Family Pyrin Domain Containing 7 (NLRP7), cytokines, zinc, and leukocytes in the pathogenesis of HM.

BACKGROUND: Hydatidiform mole is a relatively common gynecological problem which could present like spontaneous abortion, one of the commonest gynecological emergencies. It has the propensity to become malignant but can easily be identified and treated. The aim of this study was to determine the demographics, clinical features, treatment options and outcome of patients with hydatidiform mole in our environment.

Forty-eight patients of hydatidiform mole are reviewed. Forty cases (83.3%) were between 20 and 30 years of age and 24 women (50%) were primigravidae. The most common presenting symptom was intermittent bleeding. Ultrasound which became available during the latter part of the study has helped in early and definitive diagnosis. From July 1, 1969 to June 30, 1985, 381 patients received primary management for hydatidiform mole at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center Women's Hospital. Three hundred fifty-eight of these women had complete records available for analysis. Of these, 277 women (77.4%) underwent suction curettage to remove the hydatidiform mole. Sharp curettage (41 patients, 11.5%), Pitocin (15, 4.2%), hysterectomy (12, 3.4%), prostaglandins (10, 2.8%), and hysterotomy (1, 0.3%) were used less frequently. Authors describe their experiences in forty seven cases of molar pregnancy. Modern techniques (hCG beta-subunit radioimmunoassay, computerized tomography, pelvic angiography, ultrasonography, prophylactic chemotherapy) are described with regard to diagnosis and treatment of hydatidiform mole. The advantages of trophoblastic disease centers are emphasized.

Two microscopical methods are described which are useful for the identification of hydatidiform molar trophoblast. The first is an application of Nomarski's differential interference contrast microscopy which allows whole-mounted villi to be studied by optical sectioning. The second is an application of indirect immunofluorescence microscopy using a specific antiserum directed against the endothelial cell structural protein-known as vimentin.

The reported incidence of molar pregnancies induced by clomiphene citrate is 1:659. Only nine cases, including this one, were found in an extensive search of the literature. Several questions are raised regarding the true incidence of molar pregnancy in clomiphene-induced pregnancies. Evaluation of the induced pregnancy with diagnostic ultrasound is urged.

A 15-week pregnant patient with hydatidiform mole presented with overt features of hyperthyroidism. With evacuation of the uterus and subsequently hysterectomy, her thyroid state returned to normal. The transient nature of the syndrome makes definitive anti-thyroid treatment unnecessary.
