Many risk factors associated with aminoglycoside nephrotoxicity have been identified in humans and experimental animals. They include an initial high rate of creatinine clearance, high initial peak levels in serum, age, sex, duration of therapy, liver disease, and renal infection. A group of 305 patients was treated with injections of corticosteroids into the epidural space of the sacral canal through the sacral hiatus and recumbent position on hard surface. We studied the effects of intravenous injection of hydrocortisone, as compared to its solvent, in 31 patients with aspirin-induced asthma. Mean FEV1 fell significantly 5 minutes after an intravenous bolus of 300 mg of hydrocortisone, but not after the solvent, and returned to the initial values 1 hour later.
