One hundred and sixty one food handlers in two hospital settings were evaluated for their knowledge and practice of certain aspects of food hygiene. They were also screened for nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus as well as for enteric pathogens and parasites. Positive responses to selected food hygiene behaviours such as handwashing before handling food and daily change of clothes were very high and encouraging. With the increased use of wood and coal for home heating, chimney sweeping is becoming a more common occupation. A preliminary study was designed to evaluate the air contaminants present in the process. Arsenic and sulfur dioxide were found along with coal tar pitch volatiles. A method of minimizing the exposure of these chemicals to chimney sweeps by spraying a water mist is discussed.

In urology, catheter-associated urinary tract infections are most common, and postoperative wound infections the second most common nosocomial infections. This article gives an overview of standard hygiene measures, but focuses on proven and unproven hygiene measures for preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections and postoperative wound infections. Consistent implementation of these measures contributes to minimizing infection rates and to establishing a quality standard, whereby surveillance of nosocomial infections contributes substantially to internal quality assurance.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to identify personal, familial, academic, and employment characteristics of dental hygiene students from the central region of the United States to develop a comprehensive student profile for research and recruitment purposes.
