[Enamel pearls].

Enamel pearls are paraplasia. This refers to the formation of enamel at an atypical localisation. Enamel pearls are roundish or crescent-shaped structures. They are most frequently found in the root area of deciduous molars and molars. A distinction is made between true and compound enamel pearls.

Oral and maxillofacial considerations in Gardner's syndrome: a report of two cases.

Gardner's syndrome (GS) is a genetic disorder characterised by intestinal polyps, multiple osteomas, and soft-tissue tumours. Dentists play … sis and preventive strategies in carriers. Other dental abnormalities, such as supernumerary teeth, hypercementosis and odontomas, can also be observed.

[Impacted third molar root abnormality with mandibular canal close position as a presupposing factor to inferior alveolar nerve trauma].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is reducing the risks of surgical injury to the inferior alveolar nerve, by taking into account individual t … ies of the roots of retinated third molars formed by root dilaceration, thinning of cement tissues, hypercementosis, which are formed at the site of the mandibular canal. In the presence of a deep indentation on the root of the tooth, as well as in the presence of areas of apical hypercementosis in the form of a «spike», the probability of nerve injury during toot …

Unusual imaging appearance of cemental tear in the maxillary first molar on cone-beam computed tomography: A case report.

A cemental tear (CeT) is a definitive clinical entity and its radiographic appearance is well known in single-rooted teeth. However, the imaging features of CeT in multi-rooted teeth have not been clarified. We report a case of CeT which arose in the maxillary first molar and exhibited an unusual appearance in cone-beam computed tomography images. The torn structure was verified as cementum by micro-computed tomography and histological analysis. The hypercementosis, most likely induced by occlusal force, might have been torn from the root by a stronger occlusal force caused by the mandibular i…

Sclerostin in mineralized matrices and van Buchem disease.

Sclerostin is an inhibitor of bone formation expressed by osteocytes. We hypothesized that sclerostin is expressed by cells of the same origin and also embedded within mineralized matrices. In this study, we analyzed (a) sclerostin expression using immunohistochemistry, (b) whether the genomic defect in individuals with van Buchem disease (VBD) was associated with the absence of sclerostin expression, and (c) whether this was associated with hypercementosis. Sclerostin was expressed by cementocytes in mouse and human teeth and by mineralized hypertrophic chondrocytes in the human growth plate.…

Three-Dimensional Segmentation Assisted with Clustering Analysis for Surface and Volume Measurements of Equine Incisor in Multidetector Computed Tomography Data Sets.

The volumetric features of mandibular incisors' equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) degrees were more than those for maxillary incisors; thus, the accuracy of EOTRH degree-related clustering was >0.72 for the mandibula and >0.33 for the maxilla. The CT-based 3D images of equine incisors can be successfully segmented using t …

Brief communication: paleopathology of the Kiik-Koba 1 Neandertal.

The Kiik-Koba 1 Neandertal partial skeleton (canine, partial hands, partial leg, and feet), of a approximately 40-year-old probable male, exhibits a suite of pathological lesions, including hypercementosis, minor fibrous ossifications, pedal phalangeal fracture, and pronounced enthesopathies on the patella and calcanei in the context of no articular degenerations. The first two sets of lesions are related to age in the context of advanced dental attrition and physical strains. The third lesion joins a series of healed minor traumatic lesions among the Neandertals. The last represents either pr…

Dentoalveolar paleopathology of the early modern humans from Zhirendong, South China.

The fragmentary early Late Pleistocene, early modern human remains from Zhirendong, south China, present a suite of dentoalveolar pathologies and anomalies. The lesions include lower molar buccal alveolar resorption (Zhiren 1), massive dental caries in a mandibular molar associated with hypercementosis (Zhiren 2), and bilateral mesial premolar (P3) periapical lesions (granulomata with a probable left abscess) (Zhiren 3). The Zhiren 3 periapical lesions, given their bilaterality and the non-pathological incisor and canine alveoli, suggest dens evaginatus, although absence of the Zhiren 3 dentit…

Multiple osseous dysplasia arising from impacted teeth: report of a case associated with odontogenic lesions.

We report a case of osseous dysplasia (OD) showing extremely rare clinical features. A 37-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our clinic complaining of a left alveolar bony swelling at an impacted canine. Radiographic examinations revealed a mixed radiopaque lesion involving the impacted left canine and also revealed an impacted left wisdom tooth with a cystic change and a clear radiopaque lesion suspected to be odontoma. All the extracted upper teeth and odontoma showed hypercementosis and the canine was fully involved in it. Histopathologically, they showed the same features and were dia…

Dental patient with acromegaly: a case report.

Acromegaly is an acquired disorder related to excessive production of growth hormone after epiphyseal closure of bones. It is characterized by progressive somatic disfigurement (mainly involving the face and extremities) and systemic manifestations. The prevalence is estimated at 1:140,000-250,000. Although acromegaly rarely manifests in the orofacial regions, it must be considered in patients who develop malocclusion after adolescence. Here, we present a case of acromegaly with brief review of the literature.

Case report: Radiopaque mandibular lesions in three dogs.

Radiopaque lesions of the mandible are occasional findings in dental radiographs in dogs. The different diagnoses of densely sclerotic lesions in humans include odontoma, idiopathic osteosclerosis, condensing osteitis, hypercementosis, osteoma, osteoblastoma, and oral exostosis. Publications on many of these conditions in dogs are scarce. This clinical report describes three young adult dogs with radiologically and histologically similar radiopaque mandibular lesions that had either displaced or narrowed the mandibular canal. One dog showed symptoms that could have been consistent with neurolo…

Saving a Mandibular Molar With Distal Root Resorption: A Case Report.

In this case study, an all-ceramic (Emax) crown and a post and core restoration are used to successfully treat external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) in a mandibular molar. A 21-year-old male patient was diagnosed with EIRR and hypercementosis after presenting with pain and significant damage to his lower right first molar. The patient chose a post and core restoration over extraction and implant placement due to budgetary constraints. Endodontic retreatment, fiber post cementation, core buildup, and Emax crown placement were all part of the treatment. At the one-year follow-up, the pati…

Advances in dental management in the equine geriatric patient: strategies for improved welfare.

Geriatric horses have a high prevalence of dental disease, which is a culmination of age-related dental changes and dental disease throughout the life of the horse that may have long-term consequences. Wear abnormalities, diastemata with periodontal disease, pulpitis and endodontic disease, infundibular caries, and equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis become more prevalent with age. Recognition of age-related dental disease at an early stage can help to treat and possibly preserve teeth for longer. With a natural decrease in masticatory efficiency, it is even more importan…

[The mouth of patients with acromegaly].

Orofacial changes are frequent in acromegaly. Their evolution is slowly progressive. The lips (everted and thickened), the mandibular morphology (prognathism), the tongue (macroglossia), the soft palate and the uvula (increased and thickened), the parodontis (gingival hyperplasia, paradontitis), the teeth (increased interdental spaces, hypercementosis, increased dental mobility, multiple tooth loss) are concerned. Functional consequences are significant (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, malocclusion, pain of the oral maxillofacial area, decrease of the quality of life). They are rarely notice…
