Gingival hyperplasia refers to an overgrowth of gum tissue. It starts in the anterior interdental tissues and then extends posteriorly. The gums can sometimes enlarge to cover almost all the teeth. The hyperplastic tissue appears to be fibrous. The consequences are mainly cosmetic. Gingival hyperplasia can be caused by a number of drugs, generally during long-term use.

Focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH) is a benign, asymptomatic disease. It appears as papules, principally on the lower lip, although it can also be found on the retro-commissural mucosa and tongue and, less frequently, on the upper lip, gingiva and palate. FEH is caused by human papillomavirus subtype 13 or 32. The condition occurs in many populations and ethnic groups. We present the clinical case of a 31-year-old male with lesions that clinically and histologically corresponded to FEH.

We report on a 14-year-old boy with congenital isolated hemifacial hyperplasia. Hemifacial hypertrophy most likely represents a minor form of congenital hemihypertrophy. MRI of the soft tissue is particularly suitable to support the diagnosis and reveal associated bony asymmetries.

Drug-induced gingival hyperplasia is a serious concern both for the patient and the clinician. A 45 year-old Caucasian male patient with hypertension, who received amlodipine (10 mg/day, single dose orally) for two months, sought medical attention because of the new-onset gingival enlargement. Clinically significant lingual tonsil hypertrophy is a rare entity in children. We describe a child, status postadenotonsillectomy, with recurrent hypertrophy of the lingual tonsil after carbon dioxide laser ablation. Workup was negative for immunodeficiency, cystic fibrosis, and allergies. Hemimandibular hyperplasia is a well-defined, rare asymmetrical mandibular malformation. It is characterized by diffuse enlargement of the condyle, the condylar neck, and the ramus and body of the mandible. Because the anomaly begins before puberty, it is understandable that the maxilla follows the downward growth of the mandible. Gingival hyperplasia or gingival overgrowth is a common occurrence in patients taking phenytoin, cyclosporine, or calcium channel blockers. Speech, mastication, tooth eruption, and aesthetics may be altered. Controlling the inflammatory component through an appropriate oral hygiene program may benefit the patient by limiting the severity of the gingival overgrowth. Two cases of active unilateral condylar hyperplasia which were treated with condylectomy alone are presented. The first case was an adult form and the other a juvenile form. Both were classified as active by using 99Tc bone scintigraphy. Clinical and radiographic features of both cases conformed to the hemimandibular hypertrophy type. Satisfactory facial symmetry and dental occlusion were achieved. Histopathological data confirmed the activity of the articular cartilage layers.

Crossed congenital hemifacial hyperplasia is a rare condition that produces facial asymmetry and overgrowth of the opposite lower extremity. A case involving the left side of the head and the right foot is presented. Etiologic theories are discussed. The involvement of crossed structures suggests the possibility that the cause may be related to abnormalities of the nervous system.

A 26-year-old man presented with an unusual skin lesion consisting of a hairless area on the left leg studded with reddish-brown papules, together with follicular hyperkeratosis and circumscribed anhidrosis. Skin biopsies showed dense lymphocytic infiltrates in the dermis and around hyperplastic sweat ducts and glands. Similar clinical and histological features have been described in two previous case reports. We propose the term syringolymphoid hyperplasia with alopecia for this unusual skin disease.
