Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is used to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis, which often is secondary to gastrointestinal and ovarian cancers. During CRS, the surgeon resects cancerous tumors from the peritoneal cavity. During HIPEC, a chemotherapy agent is introduced into a solution that flows in and out of catheters in the abdominal cavity for approximately 90 minutes. The chemoperfusate is heated to 42° C (107.6° F), which kills cancer cells but is nonthreatening to normal cells. A primary goal of combining CRS with HIPEC is to apply targete

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical condition characterized by mucinous ascites, typically related to appendiceal or ovarian tumours. Current standard treatment involves cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), but recurrences occur in 20-30 per cent of patients. The aim of this study was to define the timing and patterns of recurrence to provide a basis for modifying follow-up of these patients.
METHODS: This observational study examined a prospectively developed multicentre national database (RENAPE working group) to identify

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are used in the management of selected peritoneal malignancies. While most patients achieve long-term disease-free survival, there remains a group with early recurrence (ER). We aim to investigate the clinical factors associated with ER.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of CRS-HIPEC patients treated between April 2001 and Feb 2016 was performed. ER was defined as recurrence within 12 months of CRS-HIPEC. Patients were stratified according to time to recurrence an

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In highly selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) can be an aggressive but worthwhile treatment regimen. Resection of the rectosigmoid is frequently performed with CRS. The aim of the study was to assess the safety of the rectal anastomosis in this setting.
METHODS: Between 2005 and 2016, 436 patients underwent CRS/HIPEC. Clinical data were analyzed with respect to the morbidity associated with a rectum resection.
RESULTS: In 436 patients, 174 rectum resections (40

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (ptc) represents advanced malignant disease and has generally been associated with a grim prognosis. Peritoneal surface malignancy is often the major source of morbidity and mortality; it is of major concern in cancer management. Although ptc is categorized as metastatic disease, it represents a special disease pattern considered to be a locoregional disease limited to the abdominal cavity. The combination of cytoreductive surgery (crs) and intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (hipec) has successfully been used as locoregional treatment for selecte

UNLABELLED: Surgical cytoreduction combined with intraperitoneal chemo-hyperthermia (HIPEC) has shown to provide survival benefits in the management of some peritoneal carcinomatosis. The cisplatin (CP) used in HIPEC carries a risk of renal impairment (RI). This risk could be reduced by administration of amifostine (A). The aim of our study was to assess the utility of A in preventing RI during IPCH with CP.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study including patients who underwent HIPEC between January 2007 and June 2013. The HIPEC involved administration of CP and mitomycin C, between 41 an

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm. Due to the limited understanding of its biology and behaviour, peritoneal mesothelioma poses a diagnostic and management challenge. The management of peritoneal mesothelioma has been controversial; systemic chemotherapy, palliative surgery and cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have been described.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study shares our experience with cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC for 5 out of the 6 cases of peritoneal mesotheliomas treated surgically, at a single

UNLABELLED: Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare and lethal disease. Locoregional treatments combining cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) seem to improve prognosis.
METHODS: Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC was performed in 22 patients at the Centre Hospitalier-Lyon Sud between 1989 and 2006. A retrospective analysis of survival was carried out to assess clinical and histological prognostic factors.
RESULTS: Nineteen patients with diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma were included (16 epithelial, 3 biphasic and 3 multicystic forms)

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal cancer frequently presents with peritoneal metastases. Cytoreductive surgery combined (CRS) with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is currently standard practice for metastatic appendiceal cancer, particularly mucinous subtypes. However, the specific benefit of adding standard postoperative systemic chemotherapy, either alone or in addition to HIPEC, remains unclear.
METHODS: Using the National Cancer Database (NCDB) from 2018 to 2022, we identified 888 patients with appendiceal cancer (goblet cell/composite, signet-ring/diffuse, or adenocarcinoma) characteri

Newer techniques that have found a place in cancer management in adults are offered far less commonly in pediatric patients. We present a case of a patient with recurrent Wilms' tumor managed with a novel combination of cytoreductive surgery, intraperitoneal brachytherapy, and subsequent hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Each stage presents challenges that the pediatric anesthetist is unlikely to have faced before. Such cases require flexibility and thorough planning to manage the combination of major surgery, remote anesthesia with brachytherapy and hyperthermic chemotherapy with its

We present a case of a 41-year-old female diagnosed with Granulosa Cell Tumor (GCT) EC IVB who developed a hypersensitivity reaction (HSR) to carboplatin during the sixth cycle of treatment and subsequently underwent successful intraperitoneal desensitization with cisplatin during hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The patient experienced a severe HSR 30 min after carboplatin infusion, presenting with generalized rash, pruritus, nausea, chest pain, and dyspnea. The infusion was halted, and she was treated with intramuscular epinephrine (0.50 mg), intravenous chloropyramine (20

Ovarian cancer (OC) is a leading cause of gynecologic cancer-related deaths. Despite improvements, the 10-year survival rate has remained relatively unchanged in recent years. Disease recurrence occurs in nearly 80% of patients with advanced disease symptoms. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a therapy that targets common sites of OC recurrence with heated chemotherapy during surgery, which promotes either direct cell death, heightened deoxyribonucleic acid damage, or increased tumor susceptibility to chemotherapeutics. Clinical trials utilizing HIPEC have shown promising re

BACKGROUND: Consensus regarding the hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for colorectal cancer (CRC) regimen remains elusive. In this study, patient-derived tumor organoids from CRC were utilized as a preclinical model for in vitro drug testing of HIPEC regimens commonly used in clinical practice. This approach was used to facilitate the clinical formulation of HIPEC.
METHOD: Tumor tissues and corresponding clinical data were obtained from patients diagnosed with CRC at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University. Qualified samples were cultured and passaged. We aimed

Peritoneal spread is a frequent cause of metastasis in both the synchronous and metachronous settings for patients with pancreatic cancer. Recent improvements in systemic chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer may now allow for the careful selection of patients with oligometastatic disease isolated to the peritoneum who may benefit from consolidative cytoreduction and HIPEC.

BACKGROUND: Albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel), as a special targeted preparation of paclitaxel, has the advantages of good curative effect and less side effects in anti-tumor therapy. The existence of the plasma-peritoneal barrier and insufficient blood supply make intravenous drugs hard to reach the peritoneum, while hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy can solve the difficulty. And compared with systemic medications, HIPEC can also give higher concentrations of chemotherapy drugs in the abdominal cavity, while ensuring lower systemic toxicity. However, at present, there is no re

BACKGROUND: Recurrence after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for appendiceal tumors (AT) with mucinous carcinomatosis peritonei (MCP) is common. The evidence favoring iterative procedures (iCRS/HIPEC) is limited, and its benefit is not clear for all patients.
METHODS: Retrospective (1998-2020) cohorts of AT patients with MCP recurrence after the first CRS/HIPEC were analyzed. Outcomes were compared within tumor grades between iCRS/HIPEC patients and matched control patients without iCRS/HIPEC using propensity score matching (1:1). Post-recurr
