Effect of variation of the composition of CSF in the rat upon drinking of water and hypertonic NaCl solutions.

Infusing conscious unrestrained rats with either 0.5 M NaCl-CSF or 0.7 M sucrose-CSF into the lateral cerebral ventricle (IVT) at 38 microliters/hr for 4 hr induced drinking. Although the infusates were nearly equiosmotic, water drinking during the 0.5 M NaCl-CSF was greater than during 0.7 M sucrose-CSF. However, IVT infusions of 0.7 M mannitol-CSF at rates of 9.4 microliters/hr or 38 microliters/hr for 4 hr or 10 microliters/hr for 4 days failed to induce water drinking. Also, IVT infusion of 0.27 M mannitol-CSF at 38 microliters/hr for 4 hr failed to significantly alter water drinking. CSF

SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF BLUE EYE HYPERTONIC SOLUTION VERSUS SALINE SOLUTION IN THE TREATMENT OF FLAT COLONIC LESIONS: A RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a significant global health challenge, with early detection and minimally invasive treatments playing key roles in reducing morbidity and mortality. Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is widely employed for flat colonic lesions, and the quality of submucosal elevation is a decisive factor for achieving complete resections, minimizing complications, and ensuring accurate histopathological assessment. Conventional 0.9% saline with dye is the standard solution but dissipates rapidly, while viscoelastic agents such as Blue Eye may offer more durable a

Effects of adding hypertonic saline solutions and/or etilefrine to standard diuretics therapy in cirrhotic patients with ascites.

OBJECTIVE: The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activation is the milestone in ascites formation. Hypertonic saline solution (HSS) has attracted considerable interest over the last years in ascites control. Other therapeutic models and concepts have been introduced to overcome diuretic resistance and control ascites. We aimed to evaluate the effects of adding HSS infusion and/or etilefrine to oral diuretics therapy on inflammatory and metabolic pathways, renal and systemic hemodynamics, and clinical outcomes by estimating the changes in selected biochemical and biological markers in

Volume regulation in mammalian skeletal muscle: the role of sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporters during exposure to hypertonic solutions.

Controversy exists as to whether mammalian skeletal muscle is capable of volume regulation in response to changes in extracellular osmolarity despite evidence that muscle fibres have the required ion transport mechanisms to transport solute and water in situ. We addressed this issue by studying the ability of skeletal muscle to regulate volume during periods of induced hyperosmotic stress using single, mouse extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle fibres and intact muscle (soleus and EDL). Fibres and intact muscles were loaded with the fluorophore, calcein, and the change in muscle fluorescence

Treatment of hemorrhagic shock with hypertonic saline solution modulates the inflammatory response to live bacteria in lungs.

Shock and resuscitation render patients more susceptible to acute lung injury due to an exacerbated immune response to subsequent inflammatory stimuli. To study the role of innate immunity in this situation, we investigated acute lung injury in an experimental model of ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) followed by an early challenge with live bacteria. Conscious rats (N = 8 in each group) were submitted to controlled hemorrhage and resuscitated with isotonic saline (SS, 0.9% NaCl) or hypertonic saline (HS, 7.5% NaCl) solution, followed by intratracheal or intraperitoneal inoculation of Escherichia co

Comparison of a small volume of hypertonic saline solution and dextran 40 on hemodynamic alternations in conscious calves.

The hemodynamic effects of rapid intravenous (IV) administration of 10% dextran 40 in saline solution (D40) and 7.2% hypertonic saline solution (HSS) in calves were compared. Calves received isotonic saline solution (ISS), HSS or D40 (3 calves/group) and were monitored of blood pressure, and cardiac output (CO) for 180 min. HSS and D40 infusions induced a significant increase in relative plasma volume reaching 134.9+/-2.8 and 125.0+/-1.9%, respectively at the end of fluid infusion. In the HSS group, CO, cardiac index (CI) and stroke volume (SV) remained constant at low levels after 90 minutes

[Hydatid disease of the femoral shaft treated with surgery and hypertonic solution wash-out combined with albendazole].

We report a case of pathological fracture of the femoral shaft in a patient presenting a diaphyseal hydatid cyst. Surgical treatment consisted in wide resection followed by washout using a 20% hypertonic saline solution and nail plate fixation. Albendazole was given as adjuvant treatment. Postoperatively, the patient developed rhabdomyolysis with local superinfected necrosis which required early revision to remove the material. At twenty-two months, the local and general course was satisfactory. The pathological fracture healed and no secondary localization could be identified. Echinococcosis

Hypertonic saline solution for control of elevated intracranial pressure in patients with exhausted response to mannitol and barbiturates.

Critically elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) represents the most important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients suffering from severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is a serious complication after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Thus new strategies for the control of ICP are required. Based on the evidence available hypertonic saline solution (HSS) may be a promising approach. It was therefore the aim of the present study to evaluate in a prospective manner the effects of HSS on ICP and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) in patients with therapy-resistant elevation of ICP. [Effects of hypertonic solution on the membrane potential of isolated outer hair cell in the guinea pig cochlear].

To learn effects of hypertonic solution on the membrane potential and cell length of isolated outer hair cell in the guinea pig cochlear, we determined the membrane potential and cell length during hypertonic activation with ACAS 570 and the membrane potential sensitive probe DiBAC4(3). The results showed that the hypertonic activation depolarized the outer hair cell and made it elongate. We think that the outer hair cell has activity, the depolarization and elongation of the outer hair cell caused by hypertonic solution are cyto-electrophysiological basis of hearing loss and recruitment in Me

Evaluation of a hypertonic saline-dextran solution for treatment of dogs with shock induced by gastric dilatation-volvulus.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that small volumes of hypertonic saline-dextran (HSD) solution can be used to effectively resuscitate dogs in shock induced by gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), and, compared with administration of large volumes of lactated Ringer's solution (LRS), can be used to limit the overall volume of fluid needed for resuscitation. DESIGN: Prospective, clinical study. ANIMALS: 15 dogs with GDV-induced shock. PROCEDURE: Initially, HSD solution (5 ml/kg of body weight) or LRS (60 to 90 ml/kg) was administered. All dogs then received a maintenance administration (20 ml
