Visual illusion susceptibility in autism: A neural model.

While atypical sensory perception is reported among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the underlying neural mechanisms of autism that give rise to disruptions in sensory perception remain unclear. We developed a neural model with key physiological, functional and neuroanatomical parameters to investigate mechanisms underlying the range of representations of visual illusions related to orientation perception in typically developed subjects compared to individuals with ASD. Our results showed that two theorized autistic traits, excitation/inhibition imbalance and weakening of top-…

Brain activity associated with the rubber foot illusion.

The internal representation of the body is constantly updated by sensory information based on interactions with the environment. The internal representation of the hand can be experimentally manipulated with the rubber hand illusion (RHI) paradigm. Brain activity during the RHI provides insight into the neural mechanisms underpinning the reconstruction of the internal representation of the hand. Recently, the RHI paradigm has been employed for the lower limb, revealing that the illusion is also induced in the lower limb (rubber foot illusion; RFI). However, the neural correlates of the RFI rem

The Rubber Hand Illusion in a patient with hand disownership.

A 78-year-old patient with a right hemispheric sensorimotor ischemic stroke suffered from problems in ownership of her left arm (somatoparaphrenia). After recovering from motor weakness, however, body ownership problems remained present. To assess whether disturbed feelings of ownership coincided with an enhanced or diminished susceptibility for gaining ownership over a foreign hand, we applied the 'Rubber Hand Illusion' (RHI) to the ipsi- and contralesional hand. The RHI was significantly stronger for the contralesional left arm than for the right arm. In addition, solely visual exposure to t

The illusion of severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Thenar atrophy occurs in patients with severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) of long-standing duration. In this report we present a young woman with mild bilateral CTS, based on electrophysiological studies, in whom marked thenar atrophy was on a congenital basis related to the VATER association (vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, and radial or renal abnormalities).

Microsaccades drive illusory motion in the Enigma illusion.

Visual images consisting of repetitive patterns can elicit striking illusory motion percepts. For almost 200 years, artists, psychologists, and neuroscientists have debated whether this type of illusion originates in the eye or in the brain. For more than a decade, the controversy has centered on the powerful illusory motion perceived in the painting Enigma, created by op-artist Isia Leviant. However, no previous study has directly correlated the Enigma illusion to any specific physiological mechanism, and so the debate rages on. Here, we show that microsaccades, a type of miniature eye moveme

Room tilt illusion influenced by head position.

After a low brainstem stroke, a 73-year-old man experienced episodes of 90 degrees tilting of the visual environment in the sagittal plane evoked or terminated by voluntarily changing his head position. The episodes ceased 10 days after the stroke. This provocation by head position supports the idea that pathologic visual-vestibular interaction is at the basis of the room tilt illusion.

Illusion in medicine: the case for the Elliott Wave Principle.

A review of infectious diseases and other conditions, as reported over a period of months to many years, shows that our attempt to forecast peaks and troughs of disease activity fails more often than not. A technique used to discern and count rising and falling waves of disease activity (also employed in stock markets and known there as the Elliott Wave Principle) provides a novel approach for better understanding of outbreaks of disease and the attitude of health professionals in response. Thirteen figures demonstrate the approach in action.

Eye Movement Patterns Under Exposure to Spatial Disorientation Illusions During Simulated Flight.

ObjectiveTo identify eye movement patterns that are correlated with spatial disorientation (SD) events during flights in a flight simulator that induces SD.BackgroundSpatial Disorientation is one of the main causes for aviation mishaps. It can result from illusions caused by misinterpreted vestibular or visual sensory cues, leading to an incorrect perception of an aircraft's position, attitude, or motion. SD prevention is of great importance, as there is currently no objective tool to identify its occurrence.MethodEye movements of 45 participants (30 aircrew members, 15 cadets) were recorded u…

McCollough and Watercolor Effects: Visual Illusions that Fade in Early Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND Visual illusions provide insight into visual perception processes. We examined the McCollough effects (ME) and watercolor effects (WE) in patients with early Alzheimer disease (AD) and cognitively healthy older adults, and evaluated the influence of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in the AD mild dementia (MD) stage. MATERIAL AND METHODS We included 28, 27, and 26 patients with MD, amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and normal cognition (control group), respectively. Participants completed the CDR, MMSE, ADAS-Cog 13, Ishihara test, and ME and WE evaluations. ME was evaluated b…

The Pareidolia Test: A Simple Neuropsychological Test Measuring Visual Hallucination-Like Illusions.

BACKGROUND: Visual hallucinations are a core clinical feature of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and this symptom is important in the differential diagnosis and prediction of treatment response. The pareidolia test is a tool that evokes visual hallucination-like illusions, and these illusions may be a surrogate marker of visual hallucinations in DLB. We created a simplified version of the pareidolia test and examined its validity and reliability to establish the clinical utility of this test. METHODS: The pareidolia test was administered to 52 patients with DLB, 52 patients with Alzheimer's …

Hallucinators find meaning in noises: pareidolic illusions in dementia with Lewy bodies.

By definition, visual illusions and hallucinations differ in whether the perceived objects exist in reality. A recent study challenged this dichotomy, in which pareidolias, a type of complex visual illusion involving ambiguous forms being perceived as meaningful objects, are very common and phenomenologically similar to visual hallucinations in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We hypothesise that a common psychological mechanism exists between pareidolias and visual hallucinations in DLB that confers meaning upon meaningless visual information. Furthermore, we believe that these two types of v…

The impact of visual illusions on perception, action planning, and motor performance.

The present study extended recent research revealing that illusions can influence performance in golf putting (Witt, Linkenauger, & Proffitt Psychological Science, 23, 397-399, 2012), by exploring the potential mediating roles of attention and action planning. Glover and Dixon's (Journal of Experimental Psychology. Human Perception and Performance, 27, 560-572, 2001) planning-control model suggests that both perceptual and movement-planning processes are prone to illusion-based bias. We therefore predicted that both the perception of target size and a measure of attentional control related to …

Age-related susceptibility to the Müller-Lyer and the horizontal-vertical illusions.

Participants between the ages of 3 and 20 years adjusted the Müller-Lyer illusion and the inverted-T form of the Horizontal-Vertical illusion. Perceptual error was quantified using signal detection and nonparametric measures of sensitivity and responsivity. Significant changes in sensitivity and responsivity were found for each illusion across participants' ages. No effect of sex of participant was found. Sensitivity and responsivity were largely asymptotic between the ages of 13 to 15 years for the Müller-Lyer illusion and between the ages of 11 to 15 years for the Horizontal-Vertical illusio

Susceptibility to illusions and performance on visuospatial tasks in individuals with autism.

The current study follows a recent paper reporting that individuals with autism were just as susceptible to visual illusions as those without autism (Ropar & Mitchell, 1999). The possibility that individual differences may account for the failure to replicate Happe's (1996) findings is explored by presenting a battery of visuospatial tasks thought to measure weak central coherence (embedded figures, block design, Rey complex figure test). Participants with autism were distinguished by relatively good performance on visuospatial tasks, though there was no superiority effect in those with Asperg…

[Thoracic pseudo-lesions induced by inadequate methodology, optical illusions, and anatomical variations].

False-positive or over-calling of findings at chest radiography may have important consequences by generating numerous and unnecessary examinations. The advances made in thoracic imaging have currently decreased the number of technical errors. However, we are frequently confronted with visual illusions or with failure to recognize anatomical variants, either congenital, age-related or physiological in nature. Other difficulties are due to functional variations. Over-calling depends on the clinical context, which may inadequately suggest an interstitial lung process, abnormalities of the vascul…
