Reorganization of large-scale cognitive networks during automation of imagination of a complex sequential movement.

We investigated the functional reconfiguration of the cerebral networks involved in imagination of sequential movements of the left foot, both performed at regular and fast speed after mental imagery training. Thirty-five volunteers were scanned with a 3T MRI while they imagined a sequence of ankle movements (dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, varus and valgus) before and after mental practice. Subjects were distributed in two groups: the first group executed regular movements whereas the second group made fast movements. We applied the general linear model (GLM) and model-free, exploratory tensor

Effectiveness of adaptive pretend play on affective expression and imagination of children with cerebral palsy.

PURPOSE: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have difficulty participating in role-pretending activities. The concept of adaptive play makes play accessible by modifying play materials for different needs or treatment goals for children with CP. This study examines the affective expressions and imagination in children with CP as a function of ordinary versus adaptive pretend play. METHOD: The Affect in Play Scale-Brief Rating measured the affective expression and imagination for 29 children with CP and 29 typically developing children (mean age=7.34 years). Two groups of children were observed

Changes in autonomic and EEG patterns induced by hypnotic imagination of aversive stimuli in man.

Autonomic and electroencephalographic (EEG) responses to aversive stimuli presented by means of hypnotic suggestion have been studied in man.Healthy volunteers with simple phobia were screened for susceptibility to hypnosis. The experimental paradigm included periods of rest during which the hypnotized subjects were asked to produce an emotionally neutral mental image and periods of emotional activation in which they were asked to image a phobic object. Heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (RF) and EEG were processed to obtain the HR-related indexes of sympatho-vagal balance and the EEG spec

Story-telling ability in children with autism or Asperger syndrome: a window into the imagination.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum conditions are diagnosed on the basis of impaired imagination. The present study used a totally free story-telling method to assess if narratives produced by children with autism or Asperger Syndrome (AS) contained fewer imaginative events. METHOD: In Condition 1, children were offered an imaginary theme and asked to elaborate a story. In Condition 2, they were offered a reality-based theme with the same instructions. Comparison groups included 13 children with autism, 14 children with AS, 15 children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD), and 14 normally devel

Collaborative imagination synchronizes representations of the future and fosters social connection in the present.

From close friends to people on a first date, imagining a shared future appears fundamental to relationships. Yet, no previous research has conceptualized the act of imagination as a socially constructed process that affects how connected we feel to others. The present studies provide a framework for investigating imagination as a collaborative process in which individuals cocreate shared representations of hypothetical events-what we call collaborative imagination. Across two preregistered studies (N = 244), we provide evidence that collaborative imagination of a shared future fosters social

Beyond imagination: Sorting out and treating psychosis in the context of autism spectrum disorder.

In the last decades, growing caseness for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been observed, owing to the diagnostic accretion of low-impairment forms, over and above other possible causes. Unrecognized ASD is likely to be mislabeled as a psychotic disorder (PD), as people in the spectrum may show 'pseudopsychotic' symptoms, resembling both negative and positive symptoms. On the other hand, PDs are likely to be overlooked when they arise in people with ASD, due to the 'diagnostic overshadowing' of new-onset conditions by lifelong core autistic symptoms. The three available metanalyses on the oc

Imagination and integrity: decision-making among lesbian couples to use medically provided donor insemination.

This paper reports findings from a pilot study of lesbian parents in the UK who used medicalised donor insemination (DI) with unknown donors. It focuses on decision-making processes in family construction: this includes lesbian parents' experiences with clinicians and their family stories as told to clinicians and to their young children. Findings reveal that parents' understanding of family, particularly the centrality of the lesbian couple as the key parenting relationship, is crucial. We suggest that this group of parents make considered decisions about how their family might be created. It

Poetry as Praxis + "Illumination": Toward an Epistemically Just Health Promotion for Resistance, Healing, and (Re)Imagination.

Health promotion is facing a most challenging future in the intersections of structural racism, COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), racialized police violence, and climate change. Now is a critical moment to ask how health promotion might become more responsive to and representative of people's daily realities. Also how it can become a more inclusive partner in, and collaborative conduit of, knowledge-one capable of both informing intellects and transforming hearts. It needs to feel the pulse of the "fierce urgency of now," and perhaps nothing can reveal this pulse more than the creative powe

Midfrontal oscillatory alterations during gait imagination and observation in Parkinson's disease with freezing of gait.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a disabling motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), linked to impaired motor automaticity and cognitive control. Cognitive strategies like motor imagery (gait imagination, GI) and action observation (gait observation, GO) are used in rehabilitation, but their neural mechanisms are not well understood. This study used EEG to examine midfrontal oscillations during GI and GO in healthy controls (HC, n = 21), PD without FOG (PDFOG-, n = 16), and PD with FOG (PDFOG+, n = 34), with resting-state EEG (eyes-closed and eyes-open) as baseline. During GI, both PD groups showe

Stolen Identities, Suspended Lives. Embodied Active Imagination in Clinical Work with Victims of State Terrorism.

Each collective trauma holds its own particularities and forms of horror. When the violence is exerted by the government responsible for the care of the population it is termed state terrorism. The traumatic experience and its subsequent negation create a profound dissociation between two narratives: the explicit, which conceals the true facts, and the implicit, which remains unconscious and unbridgeable. In the gap between the two, life becomes suspended. From a Jungian perspective, this can be understood as the interruption of the process of translation and integration (terms that I will exp

Art, the visual imagination and neuroscience: The Chauvet Cave, Mona Lisa's smile and Michelangelo's terribilitá.

This paper considers several types of imagination relevant to art historical enquiry. These are exemplified in artistic expressions ranging from palaeolithic paintings in the Chauvet Cave, to drawings, sculptures and buildings designed by Michelangelo and drawings and paintings by Leonardo, and are related to recent neuroscientific discoveries. From this it emerges that important types of imagination cannot be understood without an appreciation of the neural processes that underlie them and especially without an acknowledgement of the importance of neurochemistry.

Perceptions of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria: Understanding the influence of imagination on health orientation.

The 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak was officially declared in the West Africa region by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 23 March 2014. This first episode of EVD in Nigeria on 20 July 2014 raised more intense panic globally than the seven occurrences of the disease in Zaire. Although Nigeria was declared Ebola free by the WHO within 3 months, it is imperative to understand people's perceptions of the disease in the country. A discussion of peoples' perception of EVD in Nigeria is the aim of this article. This discussion paper complements secondary data with grey literature to ex

The activation pattern in normal humans during suppression, imagination and performance of saccadic eye movements.

The distribution of activated cerebral regions was examined in nine normal subjects during four different eye movement-related conditions: (1) fixation-fixation on a central light emitting diode; (2) saccadic suppression-fixation on a diode in the presence of flashing lateral targets; (3) reflexive/volitional saccades-performance of overt eye movements to two laterally lit targets and back to the centre; and (4) imagined saccades-imagining, but not performing, the same eye movements. The regional neural activity was measured indirectly using repetitive bolus injections of oxygen-15-labelled wa

Behavioural avoidance to imagined conditioned stimuli in differential fear conditioning.

The underlying mechanisms of how a fear is born in our imagination is presently unclear. The current study used differential fear conditioning to assess how a fear is created in one's mind and how behavioural avoidance interacts with imagined fear. This study contained an Acquisition, Behavioural Avoidance, and Transfer phase. During the Acquisition phase, participants combined instructions such that whether they heard "imagine yellow" (colour instruction) or "imagine horizontal" (orientation instruction) they were to imagine yellow horizontal lines (CS+) and likewise for the "imagine blue" an

Writing an Imagined Immunity: Sleep, Sleeplessness, and the Fight Against Infection.

Although modern commentators date systematic study of sleep and immunity to the late 1970s, both medical and popular writing from the late 19th and early 20th centuries reveal a much earlier awareness of the immunological effects of sleep and sleep deprivation. This article demonstrates how historical actors conceptualized sleep as integral to bodily defense, thereby revealing a key part of the immune imaginary. The authors map the development of conceptual and experimental linkages between sleep and biological immunity from the late 19th century to the 1920s across the Anglophone tradition, r

Learning from imagined experiences via an endogenous prediction error.

Experiences shape preferences. This is particularly the case when they deviate from our expectations and thus elicit prediction errors. Here we show that prediction errors do not only occur in response to actual events - they also arise endogenously in response to merely imagined events. Specifically, people repeatedly chose between different acquaintances and then imagined interacting with them. Our results show that they acquired a preference for acquaintances with whom they had pictured unexpectedly pleasant events. This learning can best be accounted for by a computational model that calcu

Imagining and Preventing the Future Existence of Bodies with Variations in Sex Characteristics.

The diagnosis of bodies with variations in sex characteristics (VSC) is a powerful social act that affects the social realities of patients, doctors, and families. This process includes an imagined connection between various biological characteristics and sociocultural norms of gender and fertility. We studied how Israeli medical professionals approach VSC in fertility and prenatal settings. Our research considered two contrasting trends: the growing recognition of VSC individuals' rights to make decisions about their bodies and the increasing use of genetic testing to prevent VSC conditions.

Proceedings of the dengue endgame summit: Imagining a world with dengue control.

The first dengue "endgame" summit was held in Syracuse, NY over August 9 and 10, 2023. Organized and hosted by the Institute for Global Health and Translational Sciences at SUNY Upstate Medical University, the gathering brought together researchers, clinicians, drug and vaccine developers, government officials, and other key stakeholders in the dengue field for a highly collaborative and discussion-oriented event. The objective of the gathering was to discuss the current state of dengue around the world, what dengue "control" might look like, and what a potential roadmap might look like to ach

From leprosy to ground zero: Imagining futures in a world of elimination.

Achieving a target of zero-zero disease, zero disability, and zero discrimination-has become the dominant focus of campaigns to control or eliminate diseases, from HIV/AIDS to malaria to leprosy. Given the historical failure of most eradication programs over the last century, such teleological imaginings of disease-free futures might seem overly utopian. But even if it were possible to eradicate such diseases in their entirety, would this be universally welcomed, even by those most affected by them? In this article, I compare the narratives of national and international bodies concerned with e
