Machine learning-based prediction of food sensitization in infants and toddlers with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Food sensitization (FS) is a common comorbidity in children with atopic dermatitis (AD), often leading to the atopic march. Identifying high-risk patients in primary care is crucial to prioritize specialist referrals and prevent unnecessary elimination diets. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a machine learning (ML) based clinical decision support tool to predict IgE-mediated FS risk in infants and toddlers (0-3 years) diagnosed with AD using routine clinical and laboratory parameters. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of children diagnosed with AD. Patients wer

Junk food use and neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes in infants in low-resource settings.

INTRODUCTION: Feeding infants a sub-optimal diet deprives them of critical nutrients for their physical and cognitive development. The objective of this study is to describe the intake of foods of low nutritional value (junk foods) and identify the association with growth and developmental outcomes in infants up to 18 months in low-resource settings. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of data from an iron-rich complementary foods (meat versus fortified cereal) randomized clinical trial on nutrition conducted in low-resource settings in four low- and middle-income countries (Democratic Repu

Infants with microcephaly due to ZIKA virus exposure: nutritional status and food practices.

BACKGROUND: Children with microcephaly due to vertical exposure to Zika virus are an interesting population for investigation. Highlighted among their unique aspects are those related to nutrition due to its impact on child growth and development. Knowledge about the nutrition of microcephalic infants can help mothers and caregivers provide better care. Thus, this study aimed to describe the nutritional status and feeding practices of infants with microcephaly due to Zika virus exposure at birth and 12-23 months of age. METHODS: This is a descriptive study developed from a cohort of patients

Blood DNA methylation biomarkers predict clinical reactivity in food-sensitized infants.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of food allergy (FA) can be challenging because approximately half of food-sensitized patients are asymptomatic. Current diagnostic tests are excellent makers of sensitization but poor predictors of clinical reactivity. Thus oral food challenges (OFCs) are required to determine a patient's risk of reactivity. OBJECTIVE: We sought to discover genomic biomarkers of clinical FA with utility for predicting food challenge outcomes. METHODS: Genome-wide DNA methylation (DNAm) profiling was performed on blood mononuclear cells from volunteers who had undergone objective OF

Effect of iron fortification of nursery complementary food on iron status of infants in the DPRKorea.

The aim of this study was to determine the iron status of infants who consumed porridge cooked in water with added ferrous sulphate. A total of 234 infants, aged 6-12 months, were recruited from 36 nurseries in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK North Korea) and randomly divided into iron (Fe) and placebo groups. At baseline, almost half the children had Hb<110 g/L and no significant differences between the two groups were found with regard to hemoglobin concentration and anemia prevalence. The Fe group received rice porridge fortified with 10 mg of iron (as ferrous sulfate) per da

The influence of different cereal grains on iron absorption from infant cereal foods.

Iron absorption from various cereal grains was evaluated in the present study to identify possible preferences for the preparation of infant weaning foods. In six separate studies, four radioiron absorption tests were performed in each of 57 volunteer subjects by using a sequential double-isotopic method. Serum ferritin concentration was used to adjust for the effect of differences in the iron status of subjects participating in separate studies. Identical commercial processing and test meal composition were used to evaluate iron absorption from 50 g cooked cereal prepared from rice, wheat, ma

Riboflavin status in infants born in rural Gambia, and the effect of a weaning food supplement.

Riboflavin status was measured in infants between birth and two years of age, by the erythrocyte glutathione reductase (NAD(P)H2: glutathione oxidoreductase, EC 1.6.4.2) test on finger-prick blood samples. The infants were living in three rural Gambian villages: Keneba, Manduar and Kanton Kundar; those in Keneba were receiving a weaning food supplement between three and 12 months, which provided 0.15 to 0.20 mg riboflavin per day, in addition to their normal intake from breast milk and locally available weaning foods, which provided 0.13 to 0.21 mg/day over the same age range. On the basis of

Early Life Food Desert Status Is Associated With Alpha and Gamma-Tocopherol Levels and Infant Lung Function.

BACKGROUND: Living in a food desert (an area with limited access to affordable and nutritious food) is associated with a higher prevalence of childhood asthma. There is a lack of information regarding the impact of spending the first year of life in a food desert on subsets of Vitamin E (α- and γ-tocopherol) levels and lung development. OBJECTIVE: Determine if living in a food desert at 3 months of life is associated with altered α- and γ-tocopherol, and infant lung measurements. DESIGN: Newborns recruited within 1 week of delivery and prospectively followed for 3 months. 32 infants had seda

Cytokine expression in CD3+ cells in an infant with food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES): case report.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy characterized by severe vomiting, diarrhea, and often failure to thrive in infants. Symptoms typically resolve after the triggering food-derived protein is removed from the diet and recur within few hours after the re-exposure to the causal protein. The diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and a positive food challenge. In this study, we report a case of FPIES to rice in an 8-month-old boy. We performed a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) to rice and we measured the intracellular T c

Can I Have a Bite? The Influence of Infant Begging on Food Sharing in Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus Libidinosus).

In primates, food sharing from mothers to infants may serve two main functions: supporting offspring nutritional needs (nutritional hypothesis) and facilitating the acquisition of dietary knowledge, such as what and how to eat (informational hypothesis). We investigated these hypotheses in a wild population of bearded capuchin monkeys Sapajus libidinosus, at Fazenda Boa Vista, Brazil. We analyzed 194 h of footage of 10 infants filmed over their first 18 months of life using focal animal sampling. Mothers shared food exclusively in response to infant solicitation, with solicitation events obser

Exploring the relationships between food insecurity, maternal stress, and maternal-infant health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified food insecurity (FI) and stress for many pregnant individuals, which may have contributed to adverse fetal developmental programming. This study aimed to identify key social determinants of health associated with pandemic-related FI and stress, and their association with gestational weight gain (GWG) and newborn birth weight in a Canadian pregnant cohort. Data were collected retrospectively from 273 pregnant individuals who delivered infants in Canada during the pandemic (March 2020-March 2023). Validated questionnaires were used to assess FI and pandemic-rela

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 1, Nutrient Considerations.

Operation Stork Speed, launched by the Food and Drug Administration in March 2025, represents a comprehensive initiative to update infant formula regulations that have remained largely unchanged since the 1980s. This expert panel review addresses recommendations for nutrients considering 4 decades of accumulated scientific evidence. Current Food and Drug Administration fatty acid regulations specify only total fat content and minimum linoleic acid requirements, despite substantial international consensus on polyunsaturated fatty acid specifications. Evidence strongly supports establishing maxi

Effects of food insecurity on infant feeding confidence and practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and its waves.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified economic hardships, with potential negative impacts on food insecurity and infant feeding beliefs and practices. The relationship between food insecurity and infant feeding beliefs and practices during the pandemic is not yet fully understood. Neither is how these relationships changed over the course of the waves of the pandemic. We examined these relationships in a cohort of infants born during the various waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City (NYC). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of infants enrolled from birth in
