Methionine fortification of a soy protein formula fed to infants.

Data from study of nine normal full-term infants fed a soy isolate-based formula unsupplemented with methionine were compared with similar data from study of 10 similar infants fed the same formula supplemented with L-methionine and with data from previous studies of larger groups of infants receiving various other feedings. Food intake, growth, and serum chemical values were studied from 8 through 111 days of age. In addition, nitrogen balance studies were carried out. Statistically significant differences were as follows: lesser weight gain per 100 kcal by infants fed the unsupplemented soy

The potential renal acid load of infant formula milk products available in China.

Breastfeeding is associated with enhanced renal growth and improved kidney function in infants. Formula-fed infants do not experience these benefits. A closer look at the nutritional composition of infant formula (IF) products in comparison to human breast milk (HBM) is thus warranted, particularly with regard to the potential renal acid load (PRALR) - an acknowledged risk factor for acid stress-induced kidney disease. We reviewed the PRALR of 783 IF products for infants aged 0-6 months and 786 IF products for children aged 6 to 12 months from China (2017-2024). In an additional exploratory an…

Evaluation of perfluorinated alkyl substance contamination of infant formula using covalent organic framework.

Globally, perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) are widespread contaminants that cause significant harm to human health and the environmental. Infant formula is a significant route of PFASs exposure for infants and young children. A reliable method for determining nine PFASs was established using a spherical porous covalent organic framework (COF) as an adsorbent, couple with dispersive solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry analysis. The prepared COF achieved excellent extraction efficiencies (92.62%-101.71%) for the target PFASs, which is…

Infant Colic Symptoms and Amino Acid Formula: Insights from a Prospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Infant functional disorders, including colic, irritability, and sleep disturbances, often overlap with symptoms of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). While extensively hydrolyzed formulas are commonly used to address these issues, the short-term efficacy of amino acid formulas (AAF) for managing colic remains understudied. This secondary analysis of a previously published prospective cohort, the largest of its kind in the United States, evaluated the short-term impact of AAF in improving colic and associated symptoms in infants under six months of age with suspected CMPA

Membrane filtration processing of infant milk formula alters protein digestion in young pigs.

Reducing heat treatment (HT) during processing of infant milk formula (IMF) is desirable to produce a product that more closely resembles breast milk. By employing membrane filtration (MEM), we produced an IMF (60:40 whey to casein ratio) at pilot scale (250 kg). MEM-IMF had a significantly higher content of native whey (59.9 %) compared to HT-IMF (4.5 %) (p < 0.001). Pigs, at 28 days old, were blocked by sex, weight and litter origin and assigned to one of two treatments (n = 14/treatment): (1) starter diet containing 35 % of HT-IMF powder or (2) starter diet containing 35 % of MEM-IMF powder

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in infant formula and cardiovascular markers in childhood.

To investigate whether children who consumed infant formula supplemented with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) had a more favourable cardiovascular profile than children who consumed formula without these fatty acids, we used the Wheezing Illnesses Study Leidsche Rijn, a birth cohort that included 2,468 newborns between 2001 and 2014. Data on infant feeding were obtained by questionnaires. At age 5, blood pressure, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), and carotid distension were measured. We used multivariable linear regression analysis to compare levels of cardiovascular mar…

The phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Enterobacter sakazakii strains from infant formula milk.

Enterobacter sakazakii is an emerging foodborne pathogen associated with severe diseases in neonates. Infant formula milk (IFM) has been identified as one of the major contaminated sources and a transmission vehicle. To determine the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of this pathogen, 22 E. sakazakii strains isolated from IFM by an FDA-recommended method and PCR on the alpha-glucosidase gene were subtyped by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR, and antibiotic resistance patterns. At a similarity threshold of 80%, 16 ER…

Human Milk as a Model for Next-Generation Infant Formula: Opportunities and Challenges.

Human milk (HM) is a dynamic biological system replete with functional components that support infant growth, development, and immune protection. HM is regarded as the optimal infant food; however, many infants rely on infant formula (IF) as their sole source of nutrition or as a supplement to HM. Although many ingredients have been added to IF over the past 30 y, it is not equivalent to HM in terms of composition or infant outcomes. Potential opportunities to improve IF composition include adding components extracted from the milk of other species, synthesized by precision fermentation, or pr…

Allergenicity evaluation of an extensively hydrolyzed infant formula based on cow milk protein.

Cow milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the most common food allergy in infants. Currently, hypoallergenic infant formulas on the market are mainly divided into extensively hydrolyzed whey protein formulas and extensively hydrolyzed casein formulas. There are few extensively hydrolyzed infant formulas (EHFs) with a similar protein composition to breast milk. Therefore, we developed a hypoallergenic infant formula based on extensively hydrolyzed cow milk protein (whey protein-to-casein ratio of 6 : 4) and evaluated its allergenicity in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that the antigenicity of E…

Donor human milk versus infant formula for low-risk infants: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing acceptance and use of donor human milk (DHM) in healthy infants. This review investigates the benefits and risks of mothers' own milk (MOM) supplementation with DHM compared to infant formula (IF) in moderate-late preterm (MLP) and early term (ET) infants. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL and clinical trial registries were searched for studies published up to September 2023. The primary outcome was rates of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). Certainty of evidence was assessed using GRADE framework. RoB1 and EPHPP were used to assess ris…

High-Level Acquisition of Maternal Oral Bacteria in Formula-Fed Infant Oral Microbiota.

The influx of maternal oral microbes is considered to play an important role in the acquisition and development of infant oral microbiota. In this study, we examined tongue swab samples from 448 mother-infant pairs at 4-month checkups. The bacterial composition of each sample was determined using PacBio single-molecule long-read sequencing of the full-length 16S rRNA gene and the amplicon sequence variant (ASV) approach. Although the infant oral microbiota was distinctly different from the mother oral microbiota, ASVs shared with their biological mother accounted for a median relative abundanc

Microplastic release from the degradation of polypropylene feeding bottles during infant formula preparation.

Polypropylene-based products are commonly used for food preparation and storage, but their capacity to release microplastics is poorly understood. We investigated the potential exposure of infants to microplastics from consuming formula prepared in polypropylene (PP) infant feeding bottles (IFBs). Here, we show that PP IFBs release microplastics with values as high as 16,200,000 particles per litre. Scenario studies showed that PP IFB sterilization and exposure to high-temperature water significantly increase microplastic release. A 21-d test of PP IFBs showed periodic fluctuations in micropla

Regulating fatty acids in infant formula: critical assessment of U.S. policies and practices.

BACKGROUND: Fatty acids in breast-milk such as docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid, commonly known as DHA and ARA, contribute to the healthy development of children in various ways. However, the manufactured versions that are added to infant formula might not have the same health benefits as those in breast-milk. There is evidence that the manufactured additives might cause harm to infants' health, and they might lead to unwarranted increases in the cost of infant formula. The addition of such fatty acids to infant formula needs to be regulated. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administrati…

Effect of dehydrated storage on the survival of Francisella tularensis in infant formula.

Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal or oropharyngeal tularemia in humans from ingestion of contaminated food or water. Despite the potential for accidental or intentional contamination of foods with F. tularensis, there are few studies on the long-term survivability of this organism in food matrices. Infant formula has previously been implicated as a vehicle for the transmission of a variety of bacterial pathogens in infants. In this study, we investigated the survival of F. tularensis in dehydrated infant formula under various storage conditions…

Evaluating casein ingredients in infant formula using pigs as a model for sensitive newborn infants.

Background: Relative to whey protein, the role of casein in infant formula remains underexplored. We investigated the effects of modified micellar casein isolates (MCIs) on clinical outcomes, intestinal functions, stomach coagulation, and protein digestion using near-term pigs as a model for newborn infants. Methods: MCI, plasmin-treated MCI (PMCI), or calcium-reduced MCI (CaMCI) was blended with whey protein concentrate (WPC) (ratio 40 : 60) in formulas for cesarean-delivered newborn pigs and compared with a reference group receiving formula with only WPC as protein (n = 16-18 at birth, 14-15…

Are Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcus Isolated from Powdered Infant Formula a Hazard for Infants? A Genomic Analysis.

Powdered infant formulas (PIF) are the most used dietary substitutes that are used in order to supplement breastfeeding. However, PIF are not sterile and can be contaminated with different microorganisms. The objective of this study was to genomically characterize Enterobacteriaceae (ENT) and Enterococcus strains that were isolated from PIF. Strains were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Genomic typing, detection of virulence, and resistance profiles and genes were performed with the Rido…
