OBJECTIVE: To describe a new form of anxiety in patients with Parkinson disease (PD).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 100 consecutive charts of patients with PD to identify those who did not adhere to their medication schedule owing to irrational fear of taking their medication. Information pertaining to their PD and comorbid medical conditions was collected.
RESULTS: We identified 6 patients with PD who had severe disability, yet anxiety from taking the medication caused avoidance of taking appropriate oral medication. This avoidance persisted in the face of reassurance that the medica

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder with no treatment outside of strict dietary avoidance of gluten, which makes effective patient education essential for appropriate disease management. Use of technology to deliver patient information has advanced over the past decade to include virtual visits (telehealth), easy-to-use information platforms (mobile devices), timely updates with online support (social media), and patient-driven gluten-detection devices. Information delivery through technology platforms needs to be curated by professionals to provide accurate healthcare advice. Lastly, the

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of chronic disability and is predicted to escalate in the next 20 years globally. Fear Avoidance Beliefs (FAB) are one of the most important factors associated with low back pain outcomes, including the first onset of back pain, pain intensity, pain episodes, disability and quality of life. With the prevalence rate of low back pain in young adults increasing exponentially, the factors associated with fear avoidance beliefs among university students in the United Kingdom (UK) are currently unknown. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the factors a

BACKGROUND: Intersex individuals experience poor health due, in part, to healthcare avoidance. Nonconsensual intersex surgery may contribute to medical mistrust and avoidance among intersex populations.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between nonconsensual surgery and healthcare avoidance among intersex populations and to examine if medical mistrust mediates this relationship.
METHODS: Data for this cross-sectional study were collected in 2018 and analyzed in 2022. Participants completed a survey collecting information on demographics, medical mistrust, his

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In anxiety disorders, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) improves information-processing biases such as implicit fear evaluations and avoidance tendencies, which predicts treatment response. Thus, these cognitive biases might constitute important treatment targets. This study investigated (i) whether information-processing biases could be changed following single-session computerised CBT for spider fear, and (ii) whether this effect could be augmented by administration of D-cycloserine (DCS).
METHODS: Spider-fearful individuals were randomized to receiving either 2

Social phobia is a persistent disorder that is unlikely to be maintained by avoidance alone. One reason for the enduring nature of social phobia may be the way individuals with the disorder process social information. It is important for those involved in social phobia to have an understanding of information-processing biases, because it has the potential to guide psychological interventions. In this review of social phobia, probability and cost estimates of social situations are examined, interpretive biases are evaluated and findings relating to memory and negative imagery are also reviewed.

Even to well-educated health care providers, sunscreen information continues to be confusing in regard to adequate level of sun protection factor (SPF), appropriate age of users, and whether sunscreen agents truly do prevent skin cancers. The intent of this article is to present some of the current information and controversies related to sunscreen use. It is strongly recommended that nurses teach sunscreen use and sun avoidance strategies at every health care opportunity. The message must be delivered that there is no such thing as a "healthy tan."

RATIONALE: Accumulating evidence in humans demonstrated that visuo-spatial deficits are the most consistently reported cognitive abnormalities in Parkinson disease (PD). These deficits have been generally attributed to cortical dopamine degeneration. However, more recent evidence suggests that dopamine loss in the striatum is responsible for the visuo-spatial abnormalities in PD. Studies based on animal models of PD did not specifically address this question.
OBJECTIVES: Thus, the first goal of this study was to analyze the role of dopamine within the dorsal striatum in spatial memory. We tes

Aversive learning paradigms in laboratory settings have led to valuable decades of research on the acquisition and expression of memories that produce fear and avoidance. However, the majority of these studies have focused on situations in which animals undergo aversive learning while they are in isolation. Although these studies have provided critical insights into the behavioral and neural processes guiding aversive learning, as well as translational insights into neuropsychiatric disorders, how social dimensions that are embedded in naturalistic aversive experiences influence these processe

Abuse is a major source of trauma to women, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) results from exposure to extreme trauma. To describe the relationship between symptoms of PTSD and severity of abuse, an ethnically stratified cohort of 131 abused women in a primary care setting was interviewed. Symptoms of PTSD, both intrusion (i.e., trouble falling asleep, strong waves of feelings about the abuse) and avoidance (i.e., trying not to think or talk about the abuse, staying away from reminders of the abuse), were significantly (p < 0.01) correlated to severity of abuse, regardless of ethnicity

Successful obstacle avoidance relies on complex visuomotor processes. Although optic flow provides critical information about self-motion and object motion, the neural mechanisms underlying its role during obstacle avoidance remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we developed a treadmill-based virtual reality paradigm to investigate cortical dynamics during obstacle avoidance performed with and without optic flow. Accordingly, 24 healthy adults walked on a treadmill and stepped over virtual obstacles in two environments: one with optic flow (textured walls/ceiling) and one without. El

Acutely challenging or threatening situations frequently require approach-avoidance decisions. Acute threat triggers fast autonomic changes that prepare the body to freeze, fight or flee. However, such autonomic changes may also influence subsequent instrumental approach-avoidance decisions. Since defensive bodily states are often not considered in value-based decision-making models, it remains unclear how they influence the decision-making process. Here, we aim to bridge this gap by discussing the existing literature on the potential role of threat-induced bodily states on decision making and

BACKGROUND: While it is known that excessive anxiety surrounding the measuring of blood pressure may preclude an accurate measurement, it is not known whether it could also lead to phobic avoidance behavior.
METHODS: Self-reported information was collected on 125 individuals who made postings on 5 internet-based medical forums.
RESULTS: Qualitative thematic analysis revealed that these individuals reported experiencing intense fear associated with the measuring of blood pressure, that was excessive or irrational and which contributed to avoidance of medical treatment and interference with li

We retrospectively analysed forensic autopsies to resolve various issues associated with sudden natural death while driving. We collected information about the medical history, drug treatment, anthropometry and body mass index (BMI) of 34 individuals who suddenly died of natural causes while driving four-wheeled vehicles. The reasons for driving, details of the vehicle, type of collision, perspective of vehicle behaviour and types of avoidance manoeuvres were also examined. The injury severity score (ISS), the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and the degree of cardiomegaly of the driver were det

Cancer is a life-threatening illness that, beyond its physical consequences, can lead to significant psychological outcomes, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While core belief disruption has been linked to PTSD, the pathways underlying this relationship remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine the association between disruptions in core beliefs and PTSD symptoms in cancer patients, with a particular focus on the mediating role of intrusion and the moderating role of avoidance behavior. A total of 204 patients receiving oncology treatment participated in the

There is growing evidence of heterogeneity among responses to bitter stimuli at the peripheral, central and behavioral levels. For instance, the glossopharyngeal (GL) nerve and neurons receiving its projections are more responsive to bitter stimuli than the chorda tympani (CT) nerve, and this is particularly true for some bitter stimuli like PROP & cycloheximide that stimulate the GL to a far greater extent. Given this information, we hypothesized that cutting the GL would have a greater effect on behavioral avoidance of cycloheximide and PROP than quinine and denatonium, which also stimulate

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a major global health issue. It brings death threats or serious physical injuries to patients, and is a traumatic event that can seriously affect their mental health and lead to post-traumatic stress, which can lead to serious physical, psychological, cognitive, and social dysfunction, and even increase the risk of suicide, and impose a heavy burden on patients and their families.
AIM: To investigate the mediating effect of experiential avoidance between self-concealment and post-traumatic stress symptoms in breast cancer patients.
METHODS: This study used a cros

Nonspecific low back pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal problem that is intensified during physical activity. Patients with LBP have been reported to change their abdominal muscle activity during walking; however, the effects of pain intensity, disability level, and fear-avoidance belief on this relationship have not been evaluated. Thus, we compared abdominal muscle activity in patients with LBP and asymptomatic controls, and assessed the impact of pain intensity, disability level, and fear-avoidance belief.Thirty patients with LBP divided into groups reporting low (LLBP) and high-pain in
